Biographical history

Alice Carr’s correspondence indicates that Smith was one of Emily Carr’s favorite summer guests. Carr was born in 1871 in Victoria, BC. She studied art at the Mark Hopkins School of Art in San Francisco (1889-1892) and then at the Westminster School of Art in England (1899-1904). She returned to Canada and taught art privately but, unable to make a living, she turned to other activities. Carr kept a boarding house in Victoria from 1913 to 1936, during which time she visited West Coast Indian villages to sketch.
