Custodial history

Scope and content

Subseries contains records on pieces of art that Lansdowne produced. Files 35-01 to 35-06 contain an art inventory card index which provides details of works that were sold, as well as those for specific named projects. The contents of each art inventory file vary, but typically include at least one reproduction of the artwork and an envelope which bears a unique alpha-numeric code and the name of the bird(s) featured in each piece. The year of creation is usually written alongside Lansdowne’s signature within the artwork. Formats include photographs (both black & white and colour), negatives (both black & white and colour), positives (both black & white and colour), slides (colour), paper photocopies and textual records. Files 06-30 to 06-32 and 06-34 to 06-36 also include sketches.

Arrangement

The files in this subseries have been arranged with Files 35-01 to 35-12 at the beginning containing an art inventory card index and other records, then in numerical order by Lansdowne ID, which can be found at the File level in the Notes area: Alternative identifier(s) field. Where Lansdowne included the ID number on his own files, that number is reflected in the title, as well as the Alternative identifier(s) field; when the ID number was located within the file, the ID is reflected solely in the Alternative identifier(s) field. When a file contains records with multiple IDs, the file is slotted into order based on the first ID located within the file. Artwork inventory files that do not contain an ID number have been arranged alphabetically by title at the end of the list. A few files were empty upon receipt, but have been retained to preserve Lansdowne’s numbering system. Some records from these empty files may be located elsewhere within the subseries and, where applicable, the new file number has been provided in the General note field. There may be an error in Lansdowne’s numbering system as E-18 is located in File -7-20, which is part of a group of Tryon Commissions (E-13 to E-18) and is also part of a standalone file “E-18 Canada geese” found in File 07-21.
