History
John Lauchlan Farris was born September 5, 1911 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He was the son of John Wallace de Beque Farris and Evelyn Fenwick Keirstad Farris. He was educated at the University of British Columbia and Harvard Law School. Called to the British Columbia Bar in 1935, he worked for Claude McAlpine and then joined his father’s law firm, Farris, Farris, Stultz, Bull & Farris, where he practiced as junior counsel to his father.
After serving in the Second World War, he returned to his legal career in 1945, where he became a leading litigation counsel in Vancouver. He served one term as President of the Canadian Bar Association (1971-1972), prior to being appointed Chief Justice of British Columbia in 1973. He resigned as Chief Justice of British Columbia after a police investigation in 1978. A few months after his resignation, Farris re-applied to the Law Society for permission to practise as a lawyer. The Law Society granted the application. Farris became counsel to Shrum Liddle & Hebenton. Farris died in 1986.
