Chu, Garrick (1950-1979)

Biographical history

Garrick Chu was born on July 15, 1950 in Vancouver, B.C. He was a writer, film producer, director, and community activist. He was one of the editors of one of the first anthologies of Asian Canadian poetry and fiction entitled Inalienable Rice: A Chinese and Japanese Canadian Anthology and along with Sean Gun and Gordon Mark, produced and editied Gum Shan Po, a Chinese Canadian tabloid-style newspaper. He died on December 30, 1979 in Vancouver, B.C.

Custodial history

After Garrick Chu's death in 1979, his widow, Carol Wong, gave the materials that make up this sub-series to Jim Wong-Chu who maintained custody of the records until donating them to UBC Rare Books and Special Collections in 2013.

Scope and content

Sub-series consists of records and photographs that belonged to Garrick Chu, including records from the Chinese Cultural Centre in Vancouver, film projects and interviews conducted by Garrick Chu, correspondence, photographs taken by Garrick Chu, materials collected about activities and events in Asian American communities in San Francisco, California, and the state of Washington, Asian Canadian communities especially the Chinese Canadian community in Vancouver, as well as records pertaining to social issues and activism that Garrick Chu was engaged in.
