The fonds consists of records related to the Association of University and College Employees' (AUCE's) provincial and local chapters activities, efforts, publications, and ephemera. Records span the Provincial and local unions' initial accreditation in 1973, to the Provincial union disbanding in 1985, and then follow the Local 1 (University of British Columbia) chapter through to its merger with CUPE in 1985 and forward into the late 2000's. The fonds is comprised of the following series: Executive, Advocacy and Bargaining, Committees, AUCE Local Chapters, Correspondence and Related Material, and Photographs, Publications, News Clippings and Ephemera.

Executive series: contains records relating to the executive functioning of the provincial union and Local 1 union chapters. Record types include union constitutions, by-laws, and amendments, minutes and agendas of executive meetings, and executive correspondence.

Advocacy and Bargaining series: comprised of records relating to the unions' efforts to advocate on behalf of their members and bargain as a collective unit. Record types include dockets, agendas, and minutes of Annual Conventions and Special Conventions, as well as minutes of the meetings of the General Membership, records pertaining to collective agreements between the workers and employers, including union contracts, and records following strikes, working conditions, and specific efforts that the AUCE and Local 1 undertook in response to provincial governmental and administrative changes.

Committees series: contains records related to the Local 1 and AUCE committees, including the Strike Committee, Contract Committee, Provincial Health and Safety Committee, Provincial Affiliation Committee, Communications Committee, Parking Fee Committee, Grievance Committee, and Merger Committee. Record types include meeting agendas, minutes, newsletters and correspondence, as well as related reports and materials interfiled with committee records.

AUCE Local Chapters Series: consists of records related to chapters 2 through 6 of the AUCE. The records feature the activities of the local chapters of Local 2, at Simon Fraser University (SFU), Local 3, at Notre Dame University of Nelson, Local 4, at Capilano College, Local 5, at College of New Caledonia, and Local 6, Teaching Support Staff at SFU (TSSU). Record types include meeting agendas, minutes, correspondence, contracts, and records related to local chapter strikes and contract negotiations, as well as secession from AUCE.

Correspondence and Related Material Series: consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence of AUCE Local 1, as well as related materials interfiled with correspondence. Record types primarily consist of letters, though some other materials such as minutes and agendas of meetings are present.

Finally, the Photographs, Publications, News Clippings, and Ephemera series features photographs, slides, third party publications, news clippings, scrapbooks, pins, posters, and other ephemera documenting current events, legislation affecting the union and its members, as well as provincial and local union strikes, protests and rallies.

[Local 1 Contract committee]

File contains bulletins, versions of a collective agreement, and news releases dated January 14, 1980 to April 11, 1980. Topics discussed include bargaining and negotiations, changes to the collective agreement, contract proposals, membership meetings, wages and inflation, the strike vote, and information on the strike.

[Provincial Health and Safety Committee] (2 of 2)

File contains a copy of "Perspectives for Health and Safety in British Columbia" by the B.C. Federation of Labour Compensation & Safety Committee. Topics discussed include industrial health, jurisdiction of the Worker's Compensation Board (WCB), on the job safety, negotiations in safety, adjudication and appeals, women and occupational health, and back injuries.

[Local 1 Contract bulletins and special membership meeting records]

File contains contract bulletins and special membership meeting records, dated November 20, 1979 to April 25, 1979. Topics discussed include committee and executive nominations, correspondence, financial statements, contract bulletins 1-8, settlement terms, wage proposals, collective agreement. File also contains referendum ballots.

[Local 1 Strike report and other material]

File contains strike reports and other records dated March 17, 1975 to April 14, 1975. Topics discussed include background leading up to the strike, setting up the strike such as picket locations and scheduling, finances, publicity, organization during the strike such as relations with other unions student support, an overview and summary of the 1975 strike, and recommendations. File also contains information on a CUPE strike, executive election candidate statements, a report on salary differences between men and women faculty members, correspondence, information on negotiations, contract proposals, picket bulletins, flyers, notes, and press releases.

Communications

File contains the AUCE Local 1 (UBC) newsletter ""Across Campus,"" correspondence, reports, and other records dated April 25, 1973 to October 1973. Topic discussed include the dissolution of a library committee (Coboss) and their support for the AUCE, labour board certification delays, courses for staff, rights of employees during probation, opposing discrimination, information and procedure for stewards handling grievances, history of the AUCE and Locals, steward duties and rights, an article and brief about the Status of Women at UBC report, wage increases vs. percentage increases, salaries, petition to the University Labour Committee about negotiations, job classification and job security, and meeting rules of order. File also contains a copy of the ""Final Report of the President's Ad Hoc Committee which considered 'A Report on the Status of Women at the University of British Columbia' with particular reference to Employed Staff"" dated October 1973, and the following copies of the AUCE newsletter:

Across Campus Volume 1, Issue 1, April 25, 1973 includes information on organizing committees and a pamphlet ""Anti-Biblos"" published by library staff, the dental plan, AUCE publications available for distribution, overtime regulations and calculation, that office staff are not required to wash dishes, present salary scales, and notice of membership meeting.

Across Campus Volume 1, Issue 2, May 22, 1973 includes information on the AUCE membership drive and certification by the Labor Relations Board, organization efforts in the library, retirement and pensions, setting up committees for grievances and communications, the CCU convention in Winnipeg, rumours of faculty joining a government employees union, new executive members, notice of membership meeting, an opinion poll on whether the AUCE should become an official union or not, a new SFU salary scale, and revision of Local 1 division structure.

Across Campus Volume 1, Issue 1, October 3, 1973 includes information on the new proposed Labor Code and certification, part-time workers, notice of membership meeting, renting office space in the student union building, an update on the membership drive, reclassification procedure and job duties, UBC staff salaries and average wages in B.C., and wage comparisions with other unions.

Across Campus Volume 1, Issue 2, October 22, 1973 includes information on communicating policy changes, notice of membership meeting, amendments to bylaws on dues and finances, part-time hourly employees, an update on the membership drive, bi-monthly salary payment, grievance procedures, the AUCE office opening, job reclassification results and retroactive pay, holidays in December, and daycare.

Across Campus news release includes information on the membership drive and AUCE background, and a talk by Alderman Harry Rankin on the subject of labor law, certification, and the role of unions in bargaining and grievance procedures.

Across Campus Volume 1, Issue 3, November 5, 1973 includes information on Harry Rankin and his talk, AUCE participation in the Coalition on University Reform and changes to the Universities Act, notice of membership meeting, amendements to bylaws on dues and finances, participation in a committee on women's rights, an update on the membership drive, UBC exemption from the Human Rights Act, and new insurance and disability plans.

[CUE Communications committee records]

File contains newsletters of Canadian University Employees (formerly Local 1 of AUCE), a CUPE-CUE Report on the first year of affiliation, carbon copy of a list of CUE officers submitted to CUPE, a January 30, 1986 membership meeting bulletin, hand-written notes regarding the presence of U.S. efficiency analysis firm Ritchie and Associates, and a bulletin regarding Ritchie and Associates' Final Report on Financial Services.

On Cue, Summer 1986 newsletter includes a CUE representatives directory, Grievance Committee report, Health and Safety Report, two reports on the CUPE BC 23rd Annual Convention, reprinted article from the Canadian Labour Congress on free trade, information on contractual obligations for medical leave, report and open letter on campus daycare, an update on activity and presence of Ritchie and Associates, a report on St. Paul Hospital's negotiations, and a letter to the editor regarding leadership of the Social Credit party.

[May 1986] newsletter includes a Contract Committee report, Grievance Committee report, CUE for Safety report, a report on the risks of video display terminals, a Union Office report, a report on the benefits of CUPE affiliation, letters to 'Your Cue' (Editor's Corner) from Local 1 members, correspondence opposing Ritchie and Associates, an article in solidarity of the Hospital Employees Union, information on South African apartheid, statement requesting support of child care, and a "Name the Newsletter Contest" ballot.

CUE's News, February 1986 newsletter includes a statement on office restructuring, update on wage increment implementation at UBC, Grievance Committee report, October 1985 CUPE National Convention report, Contract Committee report, letter of thanks from the Daycare Council, Job Evaluation Committee report, reprint of Current Disputes, and correspondence regarding the Pacific Western Airline dispute.

Provincial news

File contains newsletters from the AUCE Provincial, and a financial statement.

AUCE Affiliation Bulletin (January 22, 1981) includes referendum results on whether AUCE members wish to affiliate with the Canadian Labour Council.

AUCE Provincial Dispatch no. 13 (November 27, 1980) includes by-election results, and the results of a special assessment which passed to provide financial assistance to Local 1.

AUCE Provincial News: Special Issue on Affiliation (December 1980) includes discussion and opinion pieces on the advantages and disadvantages of various ways to affiliate with the CLC.

AUCE Provincial News (Fall 1980) includes topics such as local reports, boycotts, protest literature, settlements, tripartism, relations with the Canadian Confederation of Unions, a Canadian Human Rights Commission review of Canada Employment and Immigration, opinion pieces on affiliation, and sexual assault legislation.

File contains meeting minutes from the annual convention dated May 27-28, 1978. Topics discussed include finances and budgets, reports from Locals and committees, solidarity with other unions, loaning SORWUC $10,000, and resolutions and amendments. File also contains handwritten notes and blank sheets of paper as well as a transcript from the convention discussing potential affiliation with CUPE, contracts, wages, and student employment.

Sixth Annual Provincial Convention (3 of 6)

File contains Emergency Resolutions and amendments from the annual convention dated June 2, 1979. Topics discussed include solidarity with Quebec, membership, committees, duties of the provincial executive, conventions, post-secondary education, unemployment and cutbacks, opposing Bill C-22, supporting the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and the SFU 18, student employment, and the newsletter. File also contains handwritten notes and drafts, and referred motions from June 2, 1979.

Seventh Annual Provincial Convention (2 of 2)

File contains Local reports and other records dated June 18, 1980. Records include Local monthly reports from June 1979 to June 1980, Local annual reports to the 7th annual convention, a report from the British Columbia Students' Federation, reports from SORWUC, and reports from the Labour Advocacy and Research Association (LARA). Topics discussed include strikes, dues, negotiations, hiring, job descriptions, membership, student employment, communication, affiliation, supporting the SFU 18, union organizing, and labour standards for domestic and farm workers. File also contains blank notebook pages.

Ninth Annual Provincial Convention (1 of 3)

File contains annual provincial convention minutes, dated June 26-27, 1982. Topics discussed include nominations, executive reports, relationship between Locals and Provincial, reports from committees and Locals, organizing, finances and budgets, contracts, arbitration, grievances, AUCE independence and the question of affiliation, potential restructuring of the Provincial Executive into a Provincial Council of Locals, reducing costs, amendments, member rights and responsibilities, secession of Locals, and planning the convention.

[Provincial Bargaining Strategies conference records]

File contains materials relating to the Association of University and College Employees' Bargaining Strategies Conference, held February 5-7th, 1982, as well as several articles and copies of legislation. Topics discussed include collective agreements, negotiations, contract language, job evaluations, sexual harassment, wage increases, benefits, bargaining, information on court cases, the Capilano College Labour Studies Programme from Spring 1982, copies of the 1979 Labour Code, the Essential Services Disputes Act (1977), the Employment Standards Act (1980), an article by David C. McPhillips entitled "The Duty to Bargain in Good Faith," "Labour Law and Industrial Relations in Canada" by H.W. [U.B.C. Campus Community Alliance Records]

File contains records of the U.B.C. Campus Community Alliance, which consisted of representatives from AUCE Local 1, the Teaching Assistants Union, the Graduate Students' Society, the Alma Mater Society, the Co-operative Christian Campus Ministry, the Solidarity Coalition, and others.

File contains meeting minutes, correspondence, press releases, and other records of the U.B.C. Campus Community Alliance, which consisted of representatives from AUCE Local 1, the Teaching Assistants Union, the Graduate Students' Society, the Alma Mater Society, the Co-operative Christian Campus Ministry, the Solidarity Coalition, and others.. Records are dated November 7, 1983 to August 17, 1983. Topics discussed include Operation Solidarity and the Solidarity Coalition, political protests and picketing, scabs, a hunger strike, information on a press conference, and several agendas.

[Minutes of CUPE 2950 general membership meeting]

File contains meeting minutes dated December 6, 1990 to January 18, 1990. Topics discussed include a dues increase, nominations, reports on grievances, health and safety, contract proposals, legislation (Bill 79) and public sector bargaining, dental and vision plans, office staffing, communications, guest speakers on the federal budget and GST, president and business agent's reports, and budgets.

AUCE Sixth Annual Provincial Convention

File contains minutes and associated material of the June 1979 6th Annual Provincial Convention. The agenda includes rules of order, business arising from the 5th Annual Convention, the provincial executive report, local reports from Locals 1 to 6, a resolution to affiliate with the Canadian Labour Congress, constitutional amendments, the presentation of a National Union of Students policy paper entitled "Education - A System in Chaos" (March 1979), and emergency resolutions and amendments. Other topics discussed include maternity benefits and communications with the Provincial. File also includes a copy of the 5th Annual Convention minutes, and a voting card.

File contains minutes of the June 1982 AUCE Ninth Annual Provincial Convention.
