Grand Jury Resentment

File consists of 1 document: Grievances of the Grand Jury. Summary of grievances of the Grand Jury. They seem to feel that many of the cases brought before them are of a trivial nature and could be settled in a lower court. They are also concerned with the increase in crime and make suggestions as to how to curb the problem such as not issuing anymore saloon licenses, lighting the streets better, etc.

Greenbaum v. Little

File consists of four documents: bill of costs; writ of summons; judgment by default; and affidavit of service. Case regards the Plaintiff's claim that Defendant owes $283.75 principal and interest due to him as payee on a promissory note.

Grelley v. Craft et al

File consists of eight documents: Affidavit of P. Grelley; Order; Order to Amend Bill; Notice of Motion; Summons; Affidavit of Service of Summons; Order; Affidavit of H.P. Crease. Plaintiff claims $730 owed to him by the Defendant for the use and occupation of the Colonial Hotel. Court Order states that the Receiver be at liberty to wind up the business of the Colonial Hotel and to bring on and pay the accounts of the said receivership.

Grelley v. Kraft et al

File contains: Notice of Motion; (2) Draft: of Order; Receipt for Papers Out of Court; Notice of Filing Answer; Appearance for H. Kraft; Judges Minutes; Statement of Facts; Affidavit of Defendant Kraft; and Bill of Complaint. The Defendants leased the Colonial Hotel in Victoria from the Plaintiffs for one year. Disagreements arose between the parties and the Plaintiff asks that Kraft stops any further construction or renovation on the Hotel while the case between them is resolved with the Defendants paying the Plaintiff for damages suffered.

  • Rodgers is summoned to appear in court to answer Halcrow for the total amount of £12.3.2, the amount of rent due for a house on Johnson St. that was formerly owned by one Mrs. Davis. The amount owed on this rent is $55.

Hamley v. Barowovich

File consists of three documents: Record; Return of Commission; Jury List. Defendant is involved in unlawfully and fraudulently shipping and otherwise dealing with certain unaccustomed goods, quantities of spirituous duties payable on them. Plaintiff claims 100 pounds for damages.

Hamley v. Edgar

File contains: Affidavit of W. Hamley; Deposition of E. Hall; and a Writ. Case is regarding the transport and payment and duty on certain spirits that were going up North to be traded with the Indians.

Harris v. Clarke

File contains: Affidavit of the Plaintiff, Affidavit of A.J. Rise; Bill of Complaint; Judges Order, Affidavit of J. Hill; and Injunction. The Plaintiff had bought 25 head of cattle at $50 per head from a Mr. I Carson, which were grazing on the pasture of the Defendant. When the Plaintiff's agent appeared, viewed the cattle and approved of the sale, asking that they now be delivered, the Defendant denied that they were the cattle of Mr. I. Carson and could not deliver them.

Writ. Plaintiff claims that the Defendant is greatly indebted to him and he believes that the Defendant is about to go into "parts beyond the seas" and the Plaintiff asks that he be apprehended and held to bail.

Hart v. Keffee

File consists of two documents: (2) Affidavit to Hold to Bail. Plaintiff claims that the Defendant is truly indebted to him in the sum of $339.17 for payment on unpaid promissory notes. Keffee is master of the Schooner "Rose" and the case has something to do with this.

File consists of two documents: Affidavit of W. Sharron; Notice regarding the arrival of a brick making machine on the ship "Frigate Bird" purchased by the Plaintiff, now in the possession and under the control of the Defendant. Plaintiffs counsel is interfering in other matters of the said Defendants, of which he has no authority or right to interfere with, other than the brick making machine

Haskell v. Sharron and Hart

File contains: Injunction; Petition of C. Kerr; Affidavit of C. Kerr; Affidavit of H. Reynolds; (2) Order; and Bill of Complaint. The defendants are charged with wrongfully and fraudulently appropriating certain property, goods and chattels of the Plaintiff. The Plaintiff had secured passage for those goods from San Francisco to Victoria on the ship the "Frigate Bird". The Defendants were to sell the various goods (cattle, brick making machine, etc.) and the profits were to be divided between the parties. The Defendants appropriated the goods for themselves and Haskell is suing for damages.

File consists of two documents: rule for a new trial; and order for a new trial. Verdict is to be set aside and a new trial had upon the grounds that the verdict was "perverse" and contrary to evidence.
