Peter Harnetty fonds

The fonds consists of minutes from the Departments of Asian Studies (1968-1992) and History (1964-1992) as well as committee material and other records generated by these two units (1962-1992). In addition, Harnetty has provided several detailed lists which serve as abstracts for much of the material. The fonds also includes copies of speeches by Harnetty between 1961 and 1966, course material from 1985 to 1992, and other ephemera.

[Provincial Bargaining Strategies conference records]

File contains materials relating to the Association of University and College Employees' Bargaining Strategies Conference, held February 5-7th, 1982, as well as several articles and copies of legislation. Topics discussed include collective agreements, negotiations, contract language, job evaluations, sexual harassment, wage increases, benefits, bargaining, information on court cases, the Capilano College Labour Studies Programme from Spring 1982, copies of the 1979 Labour Code, the Essential Services Disputes Act (1977), the Employment Standards Act (1980), an article by David C. McPhillips entitled "The Duty to Bargain in Good Faith," "Labour Law and Industrial Relations in Canada" by H.W. Arthurs et al (Butterworths, Toronto, 1981), "Labour Relations and the Collective Bargaining Cycle" by G.E. Phillips (Butterworths, Toronto, 1981). File contains Provincial Executive meeting minutes dated January 17, 1981 to July 17, 1981. Topics discussed include a protest of cutbacks at tuition fees at Capilano College, correspondence, reports of officers and representatives, reports of Locals, the affiliation referendum, the annual convention, financial statements, office business and hiring, bylaw and constitutional amendments, strikes, grievances, "Ban the Klan" demonstration, Local 5 affiliation with the CCU and related disciplinary charges. File also contains one half-filled spiral bound stenographer's notebook with handwritten notes on AUCE business.

[Publications, leaflets and other materials]

File contains several publications, leaflets, and bulletins, dated 1973 to 1974, including undated document entitled "Forming A Union" and clipping of 'How to Form A Union" from White Collar, a publication of the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OTEU), AFL-CIO and CIC, Labour Code of British Columbia Act, A.U.C.E. informational leaflets, and Hospital Employee's Union Proposed Settlement. Topics discussed include forming a union, reasons to join the union, wages and negotiations. File contains a publication from the Office and Professional Employees International Union, a copy of the 1974 Labour Code of British Columbia, and several leaflets and reports.

Schooner "Henrietta" documents

File contains documents relating to the schooner "Henrietta." Documents include accounts and expense sheets, including an accounting of expenses to outfit the vessel, lists of improvements and repairs, and payments to crew; promissory notes / receipts for advances to the crew.

[Scrapbook of 1992 strike]

File contains materials relating to the 1992 CUPE strike, including photocopies of articles and photographs (originals moved, see below) and news clippings dated February 20, 1992 to March 26, 1992. Topics discussed include background information on the strike, working conditions and wages, pay equity, negotiation, effects of the strike, scabs and strikebreakers, UBC student, administration, and faculty responses to the strike, a B.C. Supreme Court injunction limiting picket locations, the student sit-in at the president's office and related statement, and the end of the strike. File also contains an envelope of additional news clippings.

File contains an AUCE/SORWUC shop steward handbook and AUCE travel club leaflets. Topics discussed in the handbook include rights and responsibilities of stewards, leaves from work, how to process grievances, arbitration, definitions, and a sample grievance form. Topics discussed in the newsletters include detailed information on tours and travel packages to Las Vegas, Mexico, Alaska, Europe, etc.

File contains meeting minutes and rules of order from the annual convention dated June 2-3, 1979. Topics discussed include amendments and resolutions, financial report and expenses, Local reports, support for the SFU 18, student employment, interactions with SORWUC, the newsletter, potential affiliation with the CLC, nominations, interest in changing the name of the organization (AUCE) to the University and College Employees Union (UCEU), student employment, and opposing Bill C-22 and Bill C-14. File also contains a piece of scrap paper with an AUCE embossed stamp.

File contains Emergency Resolutions and amendments from the annual convention dated June 2, 1979. Topics discussed include solidarity with Quebec, membership, committees, duties of the provincial executive, conventions, post-secondary education, unemployment and cutbacks, opposing Bill C-22, supporting the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and the SFU 18, student employment, and the newsletter. File also contains handwritten notes and drafts, and referred motions from June 2, 1979.

File contains a draft version of the sixth annual convention docket dated June 2-3, 1979. Records in the docket include an agenda, list of delegates, rules of order, minutes of the fifth annual convention (1978), provincial report including financial statements, reports of Locals and resolutions and amendments. File also contains handwritten drafts and notes used in preparing the docket.

File contains Local reports and a paper presented by the National Union of Students included in the sixth annual convention docket dated May 1979 to June 2-3, 1979. Records include draft and final versions of Local reports, correspondence and criticism related to Local 4 (Capilano), information on the SFU 18 and the history of Local 3 (NDU), and the National Union of Students policy paper from March 1979 entitled "Education: A system in chaos".

File contains correspondence, news releases, reports, and other records dated June 26, 1984 to June 18 and 19, 1984. Topics discussed include Operation Solidarity and new labour legislation, per capita dues, the Solidarity Coalition, opposition to the government budget, rallies, an AMS (UBC Alma Mater Society) Special General Meeting, formation of a People's Commission for Policy Alternatives and their activities, employment proposals, trade union support actions including strikes and demonstrations, community programs, education, Expo 86, an Operation Solidarity bargaining conference and strategy discussion, the report of the public sector committee, the 1984 B.C. Conference on Human Rights, Local reports, recommendations from workshops, and communications reports. File also contains an information package from the Operation Solidarity 1st Annual General Meeting dated June 18 and 19, 1984, a copy of Operation Solidarity News Volume 1, Number 1, dated October 1984.

Strike pay

File contains outgoing and incoming correspondence regarding 1978 strike pay, a list of cheques released to signatories, and statements of earnings. Correspondence includes memoranda to Local 1's union office authorizing release of strike pay cheques to third parties. File also includes Local 2's Annual Report 1978/9 Supplement. Topics discussed include maternity benefits, strike action, negotiations with Simon Fraser University, and committee reports.

Treasurer's files

File contains records of the union office treasurer, dated June 20, 1978 to November 20, 1979. Documents include material concerning a 1979 office reorganization. Topics discussed include administrative restructuring, dues restructuring, subsequent by-law amendments, and union income. File also contains correspondence and invoices regarding payments to AUCE Provincial, legal arbitration, employee benefits, office rental, pest control, and union dues. File also contains the following miscellaneous documents: an account log photocopy, agenda and minutes of membership meetings, financial statements, and Local 1 by-laws. File also contains issues of Across Campus (October 1979, March 1979), and Contract Bulletin 3.
