The Jim Hamm Doukhobor Research Collection consists of two VHS copies of the documentary film, The Spirit Wrestlers, and other materials relating to the production of the film such as Betacam SP videos (camera masters), VHS videos screening copies, 35mm slides, digital photos on CD, audio cassettes and transcripts of the interviews in hard copy and on CD. In addition, footage logs, printed material, photographs and photocopies of photographs relating to the film have been created or collected, 1999-2002.

Gilean Douglas Fonds

The fonds consists of the personal records of Gilean Douglas which were produced and received during her personal and literary activities . It includes manuscripts of poems, articles, short fiction and books ; material generated and collected by Douglas during her involvement with various organizations ; notes and drafts of various writings ; research materials ; an extensive professional, fan and personal correspondence; financial records ; legal records ; lists and inventories ; records of publication ; clippings. There are journals and engagement books dating from 1911, notebooks and address books, and scrapbooks containing clippings of Douglas' published articles and poems . There are also scrapbooks and correspondence generated by her parents dating back to the 1880s. There is a notable gap in records dating from 1929 to 1932.

Photographic records date from the 1890s to the I990sand include prints, framed portraits, slides, negatives and film strips. A large assortment of photos documents her family and childhood. Douglas started taking photographs as a child. By her early twenties she was an accomplished photographer, using her own pictures to illustrate her writings. Photographs taken by her during the 1920s through the early 1940s are for the most part found in the albums. Pictures taken in the 1950s and 1960s fall into 3 main categories : black & white photos of the B .C. coast taken during her trips on the boats of the Columbia Coast Mission, color and black & white photos of communities in B .C. and eastern Canada taken during her trips for the W.I ., and pictures of Channel Rock . Unfortunately the slides and pictures taken on WI trips are unlabelled and for the most part can only be identified as to general location and date. During the 1970s and 1980s the photographs are almost exclusively of Channel Rock. A representative sample of these is included in this series ; others may be found at the Cortes Museum and Archives.

Aside from Douglas' own photographs, there are several interesting groups of other people's pictures in this collection: an album with pictures of overseas service during World War I, a group of labelled photographs of Baffin Island, Pangirtung, etc. taken in 1926/27 by an RCMP officer, and photographs from a trip around the world on a freighter in 1919.

The records offer insight into Douglas' personal history and literary development . They document, in words and pictures, an unusual and interesting life which began at the turn of the twentieth century.

Materials related to his extensive interest in the forestry industry are also present, including documents related to various lectures and conferences in which he participated. Materials include correspondence, reference materials, maps, blueprints, financial documents, handwritten notes, and more.

Also included in the fonds are photographs, slides, and moving images; some of these are images related to forestry, while most show scenes related to Herring's personal interests and travels, many of which involve hunting and fishing, or attending Highland games and other cultural celebrations and events.

Fonds consists of a scrapbook related primarily to Wooton's work as a Vancouver Parks Board superintendent, but also containing several personal documents such as photographs, cards and Wooton's Free Mason certificates. Parks board related material in the scrapbook includes newspaper clippings, photographs of Vancouver parks, beaches, pools and other facilities, correspondence and manuscript notes. The scrapbook appears to have been maintained by Wootton's wife, Marion Wootton, as it contains a number of letters of condolence to her after Mr. Wootton's death. Fonds also contains a separate photograph, of the Vancouver Parks Board Commissioners 50th anniversary lunch, October 29 1939.

The fonds consists predominantly of textual, graphic, and cartographic materials documenting the efforts of Harley Hatfield, in conjunction with the Okanagan Similkameen Parks Society, the Wilderness Advisory Committee, and the Okanagan Historical Society, to establish the Cascade Wilderness area and the Hudson's Bay Company and Okanagan Brigade. The fonds also includes textual records illustrating Hatfield's research into old fur trading routes in that area. The collection consists primarily of copies, and a small number of photographs, of cartoons commenting on legal, political, social and other matters impacting the relationship between Indigenous people and the settler state of Canada. The collection also includes some other graphical depictions of Indigenous people in settler Canadian media, such as product advertisements, tourism marketing, and depictions of Indigenous people in historical artworks and photographs.

The images were collated from a large number of publications; these are primarily Canadian publications, as well as some American, British, and Indigenous-authored publications. A list of Indigenous sources consulted by the collector is available for researcher reference.

The fonds consists of records related to the Association of University and College Employees' (AUCE's) provincial and local chapters activities, efforts, publications, and ephemera. Records span the Provincial and local unions' initial accreditation in 1973, to the Provincial union disbanding in 1985, and then follow the Local 1 (University of British Columbia) chapter through to its merger with CUPE in 1985 and forward into the late 2000's. The fonds is comprised of the following series: Executive, Advocacy and Bargaining, Committees, AUCE Local Chapters, Correspondence and Related Material, and Photographs, Publications, News Clippings and Ephemera.

Executive series: contains records relating to the executive functioning of the provincial union and Local 1 union chapters. Record types include union constitutions, by-laws, and amendments, minutes and agendas of executive meetings, and executive correspondence.

Advocacy and Bargaining series: comprised of records relating to the unions' efforts to advocate on behalf of their members and bargain as a collective unit. Record types include dockets, agendas, and minutes of Annual Conventions and Special Conventions, as well as minutes of the meetings of the General Membership, records pertaining to collective agreements between the workers and employers, including union contracts, and records following strikes, working conditions, and specific efforts that the AUCE and Local 1 undertook in response to provincial governmental and administrative changes.

Committees series: contains records related to the Local 1 and AUCE committees, including the Strike Committee, Contract Committee, Provincial Health and Safety Committee, Provincial Affiliation Committee, Communications Committee, Parking Fee Committee, Grievance Committee, and Merger Committee. Record types include meeting agendas, minutes, newsletters and correspondence, as well as related reports and materials interfiled with committee records.

AUCE Local Chapters Series: consists of records related to chapters 2 through 6 of the AUCE. The records feature the activities of the local chapters of Local 2, at Simon Fraser University (SFU), Local 3, at Notre Dame University of Nelson, Local 4, at Capilano College, Local 5, at College of New Caledonia, and Local 6, Teaching Support Staff at SFU (TSSU). Record types include meeting agendas, minutes, correspondence, contracts, and records related to local chapter strikes and contract negotiations, as well as secession from AUCE.

Correspondence and Related Material Series: consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence of AUCE Local 1, as well as related materials interfiled with correspondence. Record types primarily consist of letters, though some other materials such as minutes and agendas of meetings are present.

Finally, the Photographs, Publications, News Clippings, and Ephemera series features photographs, slides, third party publications, news clippings, scrapbooks, pins, posters, and other ephemera documenting current events, legislation affecting the union and its members, as well as provincial and local union strikes, protests and rallies.

The fonds reflects Peter Cardew’s professional career as an architect, predominantly since 1966, the year that he emigrated to Canada. Over his career, Cardew designed schools, exhibition buildings for Expo ‘86 held in Vancouver, B.C., condominiums, private homes, office buildings, libraries, art galleries, retail establishments and furniture. Records include slides and photographs reflecting buildings that may have served as inspiration for his designs, as well as those that he designed and built. Records also include building permits for select projects, and an exhibit catalogue for one of his most well known exhibitions: Peter Cardew, Ordinary Buildings, an exhibition of his drawings first held in the Charles H. Scott Gallery at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver, B.C. Approximately one third of the fonds is materials that have been condensed by Brown's descendants and filed chronologically. This portion has been called the Chronological papers, and materials related to all other series may be found there, as well as a wide range of personal materials.

The rest of the fonds has been divided into 10 series of: general correspondence; papers from Brown's two government posts; his work for the White Pass & Yukon Corp.; his work for MacMillan, Bloedel, and Powell River; his work as director for other companies; subject files related to his interests; speeches and articles he wrote; personal papers; and slides (both personal and professional).

This fonds consists of records related to Bruce Devitt’s activities in the field of forestry in British Columbia as well as his public service in managing critical environmental issues in the Pacific Northwest. The fonds consists of records related to the operation of Inverness Cannery. Records span from the early 1900s all the way through to the 1950s when the cannery was closed and turned into a fish camp. The cannery was owned by J.H. Todd and Sons Ltd. from 1902-1950. Bush Family collection

The Bush Family collection consists of records and objects gathered by various family members on specific holidays or during special occasions. George and Pearl Bush contributed memorabilia related to their family’s settlement in Vancouver, their vacations in Europe and the United States, the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, the city of Vancouver, the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, and the country of Canada. Some records and objects commemorating the Dominion of Canada and the Canadian Pacific Railway Company feature racist depictions of Indigenous peoples. Items originating with George and Pearl date from the early to mid-twentieth century.

Patrick Bush contributed memorabilia related to his studies at the University of British Columbia, particularly his graduation and his membership in the Sigma Epsilon chapter of the Zeta Psi fraternity. Records originating with Patrick Bush date from the mid to late 1950s.

Records are arranged by subject in files. For example, all memorabilia related to the Canadian Pacific Railway Company is aggregated, as are records of Patrick Bush’s university attendance. This collection consists of materials related to early British Columbia history in the years when BC was still a British colony, prior to joining Canada in 1871. The collection consists of colonial government documents (proclamations, messages, acts, and rules and regulations) effecting the daily life of British Columbians. These include real estate titles, road works, railways, local, legal and financial matters, labour, and infrastructure. The collection includes proclamations by James Douglas, who was the first governor of BC and served from 1858-1864.

Ada Luise Richardson fonds

This fonds contains Ada Luise Richardson's research notes on music history and theory. Her research focused on Finnland and Russia and was conducted in the beginning of the 20th century. For her research Richardson collected Russian and Finnish folklore songs, as well as newspaper clippings and excerpts from contemporary literature. Richardson's research notes were meant to be the basis of papers on music history and theory. The fonds contains music sheets and some pieces of correspondence, as well.

The fonds consists of 1,398 glass plate negatives, glass lantern slides, celluloid prints and celluloid negatives, the majority of which were taken by Lilian Bland. The photographs reflect the varied and unique life of Lilian Bland and her family. The fonds includes several photographs of the Mayfly, the bi-plane Lilian famously designed, constructed, and flew. Other photographic subjects include horse-riding and horse-racing, Lilian's fathers' artwork, her husbands' travels in China, family photographs, birds and bird-watching, her travels in Europe, California, and British Columbia, and photographs documenting her years spent as a settler living on the Quatsino Sound in Vancouver Island and in California with her family.
Other record types in the fonds include Lilian Bland’s unpublished memoir, and the original enclosures for the photographs including boxes, envelopes, and box lists.

It offers particular insight into the social aspects of Lee’s life, as she kept many of the invitations, programs, and other ephemera relating to events that she attended because of her community involvement and philanthropy across all aspects of her life. In addition to a variety of textual records relating to her business ventures, volunteering, and military service, the fonds contains a significant number of photographs that were taken or otherwise collected by Lee and reflect the full range of her life’s facets.

The fonds is divided into five series: Entrepreneurship, investing, and business; Military service; Community and political activity; Personal records; and Photographs.

The entrepreneurship, investing, and business records series relates to Lee’s activities as a businesswoman and investor. Records in this series include financial and legal records, marketing materials, and certificates of recognition.

The military service records series relates to Lee’s time in the ambulance corps and subsequent involvement with initiatives in support of veterans. Records include a limited number of original materials from Lee’s period of service; correspondence and other records including meeting minutes and ephemera documenting Lee’s involvement veterans’ advocacy and recognition efforts.
The community and political activity records series relate to Lee’s involvement in Chinese Canadian community projects and the Social Credit and Conservative parties of Canada. Kudo Family Fonds

Fonds reflects Minoru Kudo’s involvement within the Japanese Canadian community both before and after World War II as well as the Kudo family’s experience of forced removal and its impacts on their lives moving forward. If offers insight into the actions taken by the British Columbia Securities Commission during the process of the forced removal of Japanese Canadian families from B.C. and the advocacy work of Japanese Canadians, as individuals and through groups such as the National Association of Japanese Canadians, to receive redress following the end of the war, both through the The Royal Commission on Japanese Claims(the Bird Commission) and outside of it. In addition to these materials, the fonds also illustrates the work of younger generations of Japanese Canadians to uncover and reconnect with their history. The fonds contains research files from the Kudo family, who worked to document and bring together recollections of the Mission City Japanese community as it existed before the war and where families were for forcibly removed to during it, as well as the Kudo family’s history specifically. A significant portion of the fonds is the translation work done by Kathleen Merken on Minoru Kudo’s diaries.
The materials are arranged into three series, reflecting the different time periods and purposes in which the documents were created. The Minoru Kudo diaries and correspondence series contains the original diaries and correspondence of Minoru Kudo as well as photocopies that were made by Kathleen Kudo for reference and preservation purposes. The translations series contains records relating to the translation of the diaries by Kathleen Merken, research files were used to add context to the translations, and the translations themselves. The family records series contains genealogical research files, files documenting the deaths of various members of the Kudo family, and some personal records of Kathleen Merken that speak to her academic history and work.

Johanna den Hertog fonds

The fonds reflects Johanna den Hertog’s involvement in various women’s movement, labour movement, political and public service positions predominantly from the 1970s through the early 1990s. Records include materials related to den Hertog’s contributions to the establishment of Vancouver Rape Relief, an organization established to provide services to rape victims, as well as other activities related to advocacy for women’s rights, such as her participation in planning the Women Rally for Action in 1976. Records related to her participation in the New Democratic Party (NDP) at the provincial level include her role as Vice-President/Executive member of the Provincial NDP (1981-1987), Co-Chair of Mike Harcourt’s leadership campaign (1987), leadership roles in the planning of the party’s 1982 convention and the 1983 and 1986 elections. Records related to her service as President of the NDP include materials related to her role as spokesperson for the party, chair of numerous committees, liaison with the labour movement and the party’s representative in international forums. Also included are records of her public speeches throughout Canada. The fonds also includes records related to den Hertog’s 1984 and 1988 campaigns to win election as a Federal Member of Parliament in the riding of Vancouver-Centre and the 1989 Provincial by-election for Vancouver-Point Grey, where she put her name forward for the NDP party nomination. Although unsuccessful all three times, she lost the 1988 campaign by a narrow margin. Records relating to den Hertog’s volunteer and project work include her service as a board member of the Canadian Centre for Arms Control, her publication of a book chapter on the constitutional debate that took place in Canada in the late 80s and early 90s, her service on the Royal Commission for Electoral Reform and her service as a commissioner for the National Citizen’s Inquiry into Peace and Security.
