Nan Cheney fonds

The fonds consists of 71 holograph letters from Ethel Wilson to Cheney, as well as correspondence from Wallace Wilson, Mary [Dodds] and Dorothy McNair. There is also correspondence between Nan Cheney and various artists, including Emily Carr, between the years 1938 and 1984. Cheney's subject files on Canadian artists are included in the fonds, along with newspaper and periodical clippings, memorabilia, photographs and manuscripts.

The fonds consists of records generated and assembled by David Watmough related to his life and career as a novelist, short story writer, playwright, monodramatist and performer, poet, critic, broadcaster, journalist, and teacher. The fonds includes series of records arranged in twenty divisions, with the greatest portion related to writing and literary production: novels, short stories, plays and dramas, monodramas, poetry and songs, nonfiction books, diaries and journals, essays, collections and anthologies, recordings, reading scripts and performance files, radio and television broadcast scripts and project files, film scripts, lectures, addresses, and orations, journal articles, interviews, and reviews of books, exhibitions and theatre performances, as well as correspondence, finance and business files, subject files including published material about Watmough and copies of published material by him, and ephemera and miscellanea. The arrangement of records in files by the creator has been respected where such order exists. The fonds contains textual records, both manuscript and typewritten as well as computer generated, some printed, published material, an occasional sketch or drawing, several sound recordings of Watmough performing, a small number of electronic records, and a number of photoprints and slides kept with the original files where possible. Some monodramas have been retained in the original bindings provided for performance by the creator.

Lily (Steinman) Greene Fonds

Fonds contains 171 letters from Tom McEwen spanning the decades from 1944 to 1976, and 4 letters from his wife, Rose McEwen; her sister, Anne Belenkaya; and Norman McEwen, Tom and Rose’s son, and his family. Lily Greene remained friends with both Tom and his family for many years, so the letters are mostly of a personal nature but many contain discussions of, or references to, issues important to the Communist Party in Canada and elsewhere, including Tom’s observations of and opinions on events occuring both at home and internationally, like the Vietnam war.

There are 22 photographs of Tom McEwen and various family members, as well as copies of photographs of Lily’s children. A clippings file contains an assortment of newspaper clippings, some columns and opinion pieces written by Tom McEwen, with the majority on issues or events concerning a member of the McEwen family. The clippings cover the period from 1950 through to 2000.

The fonds also contains two essays written by Tom McEwen and an audiocassette of a talk he gave in 1974 to a Grade 11 class taught by his grandson, Harry Ewen. The cassette also contains a recording of a CBC program “This Morning” that aired in 2000 and which incorporated that lecture as part of the program.

The fonds is contained in its entirety in Box #1 (Files 1-33) and Box #2 (Files 1-4).

The fonds was originally divided into the following four series: Correspondence; Editorial; Administrative; and Special projects. The Correspondence series contains the following subseries: General correspondence, Editorial correspondence and Correspondent-specific correspondence. The Editorial series contains the following subseries: Early manuscripts, General literary manuscripts, Published/printed material, Artwork, and Supplementary editorial records. The Administrative series contains the following sub-series: General administrative records, History/operational records, Minutes/agendas and newsletters, Financial records, Ledgers, Legal records, Sales/service fee reports, and Marketing/distribution records. The Special projects series contains three sub-series: Three-Cent Pulp, Arsenal Collaborative Library and the 3-Day Novel Contest. The fonds also includes business and personal correspondence, as well as financial records pertaining to the sale of artwork, Lansdowne’s services as a commercial painter, and his business relationship with M.F. Feheley Arts Company Limited and TDF Artists Limited. Records also include biographical information, awards and ephemera, along with publications containing his work, and newspaper clippings about his work and career. Photographs depict family and friends, Lansdowne at work, as well as publicity photographs.

The fonds consists of minutes, photographs, printed material, and correspondence relating mainly to union organization in the forest products industry (1931-1952), including the Lumber Workers' Industrial Union, Lumber and Saw Mill Workers Union, International Woodworkers of America, and Woodworkers Industrial Union of Canada, as well as to the activities of Harold Pritchett, whose correspondence up to 1979 is also included. There are, in addition, reports of convention, materials concerning wages and conditions in logging camps, a poster, and subject files on various strikes including those at Fraser Mills and Blubber Bay (1933-1944).

This fonds consists of 12 series; meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, welfare funds, videos, regulations and legislation, related organizations, general business records, land referrals, herring (roe), financial, First Nations, and salmon. Each of the series relates to the F.V.O.A.'s work with fishing and water concerns. The same issues defined within each of these series are also documented through the newspaper clippings. The minutes span over 40 years, beginning in 1938, and include general, committee, director's and membership meetings. The fonds also includes copies of legislation and regulations relating to various fishing and water related concerns, such as ports and harbours, maritime codes, vessel construction, shipping, and research. The F.V.O.A.'s ongoing cooperative work with relevant outside groups is documented through numerous drafts, proposals, agreements, reports, and correspondence. The videos are of the Skeena River Steelhead, Salmon, the Sportfish Observer Program and First Nations fishing rights. There is a large amount of land referral material (the application for use of Crown land) including several maps. With reference directly to fish; there is information on herring (roe) related issues, and a significant amount of documents covering Salmon. A vast portion of the Salmon series deals with Canadian-U.S. negotiations regarding poaching, water boundaries, salmon shares, runs and catches. The fonds provides overall insight into the workings of the F.V.O.A.

Fonds consists primarily of material related to Rush's activities as a leader of the CCP, political activist and writer in Vancouver from 1935 to 1996. There is also a personal/biographical series of records which detail the events of Rush's life. Other textual series in this fonds contain drafts of Rush's writings and public speeches, his correspondence, his reports and speeches to party conventions, and his published materials. There is a photographs series which details Rush's various editorial political trips to socialist countries during the Cold War. The memorabilia series also contains material related to Rush's trips abroad. There are pins, medals and commemorative coins from China, Vietnam and the Soviet Union. Finally, an audiocassette series contains recordings of some of Rush's speeches during the 1970s and 1980s.

Fonds includes correspondence between the Fee Packaging Service Corporation and its employees (primarily R.F. Marshall) as well as clients. Correspondence between the company and its clients include letters, telegrams and questionnaires pertaining to the installation of machinery for packaging lard or other compounds. The corporation's principle customers included Swift and Company, Proctor and Gamble Company and Wilson and Company. The Fee Packaging Service Corporation also corresponded with other companies such as Oscar Mayer, Hormel Company, and Bell Packing Company.

This fonds consists of records related to Darryl Adams' activities as a political and social justice activist as well as his personal life. The fonds consists of three series: personal life and administrative records; activism involvement series; and activism collections series.

Records relating to the first series, Adams' personal life and administrative files include: personal correspondence received by Adams; photographs collected, taken of or by Adams'; school records and club memberships memorabilia; news clippings and other articles; and work related records such as research materials and correspondence.

Records relating to the second series, the activism involvement series, include material created or used by groups that Adams was involved in such as the Vancouver American Exiles Association (VAEA), as well as the Galindo Madrid Case of the 1970s. These records include meeting minutes; correspondence; conference, seminar, and workshop materials; materials by or about other communist, socialist, or leftist organizations; papers, articles, speeches, critiques, letters, and reports on related topics; ephemera and publications, such as newsletters, journals, and clippings; and sound recordings such as interviews Adams' gave on behalf of VAEA.

The last series consists of three major collections that Adams obtained over his lifetime. The first collection is the lefty literature collection that consists of newspapers, magazines, periodicals, booklets and bulletins, and other publications related to leftist themes. The second collection is a poster collection and the last collection is a button collection.

Mavis Hall collection

The Mavis Hall collection comprises of a variety of printed and photographic materials collected by Margery McCuaig, Hall’s mother, during a trip to Japan, sponsored by the Japanese Tourism Ministry and the Japanese Government Railways, from July-August, 1939.

The collection contains commercially-produced slides, postcards and souvenir photographs, as well as Board of Tourism publications, prints, and a few personal items and memorabilia of McCuaig, such as a passport, scrapbook, and autograph book. McCuaig also collected ephemera from the time she spent on the cruise ship, including daily ship menus, news bulletins, travel brochures, and entertainment programmes, that exhibit her experiences onboard.

The collection reflects the forestry operations and projects undertaken by Western Forest Products and their predecessors. The majority of the material dates to the 1980s, with some material dating to as early as the 1950s and as late as the early 2000s. Much of the contents relates to MacMillan Bloedel Limited, in particular their tree farm licenses (TFLs), silvicultural practices, and some corporate information.

Tree farm license records include: project reports, working and management plans, and maps. Silviculture records include: growth and yield reports, environmental reports, literature, and summaries of silvicultural projects. Corporate records include meeting agendas and minutes, publications, and microfiche.

There are three main types of material in the collection: textual records, maps, and microfiche. The initial acquisition also included aerial photographs which have subsequently been transferred to the UBC Geographic Information Centre.

The contents of this collection pertain to the Santo Tomas Interment Camp in the Philippines during WWII. The camp was active from 1942 to 1945 and housed over 4,000 prisoners-of-war.

Records reflect the internal administrative structure and functioning of the camp, daily life of internees, the political activities surrounding the camp, and the personal experiences of Barbara and Leonard McCann.

Fonds reflects Lee’s professional career, investment ventures, engagement with political and social communities, and life with friends and family. It offers particular insight into the social aspects of Lee’s life, as she kept many of the invitations, programs, and other ephemera relating to events that she attended because of her community involvement and philanthropy across all aspects of her life. In addition to a variety of textual records relating to her business ventures, volunteering, and military service, the fonds contains a significant number of photographs that were taken or otherwise collected by Lee and reflect the full range of her life’s facets.

The fonds is divided into five series: Entrepreneurship, investing, and business; Military service; Community and political activity; Personal records; and Photographs.

The entrepreneurship, investing, and business records series relates to Lee’s activities as a businesswoman and investor. Records in this series include financial and legal records, marketing materials, and certificates of recognition.

The military service records series relates to Lee’s time in the ambulance corps and subsequent involvement with initiatives in support of veterans. Records include a limited number of original materials from Lee’s period of service; correspondence and other records including meeting minutes and ephemera documenting Lee’s involvement veterans’ advocacy and recognition efforts.
The community and political activity records series relate to Lee’s involvement in Chinese Canadian community projects and the Social Credit and Conservative parties of Canada. Records in this series include ephemera, correspondence, and meeting minutes that document her involvement with these groups.

The personal records series relates to Lee’s travels as well as her life outside of her work and volunteer efforts. Records include correspondence, ephemera, and certificates.

The photographs series relates to a large number of photo albums and loose photographs that reflect all aspects of Lee’s life.

Betty Clarke Pearson collection

This collection consists of correspondence and published materials gathered by Betty Clarke Pearson about the last voyage of Empress of Canada that was sunk by an Italian submarine on March 14th, 1943. Betty's father, John St.Claire Clarke, was the chief officer of Empress of Canada at the time of the attack. He survived while nearly 400 others were lost. Betty gathered these documents which include newspaper clippings, photographs, correspondence, and a memorandum speech, reflecting stories of her father along with other survivors of the attack.

Fonds illustrates Brown’s time as a conscientious objector in British Columbia during WWII as well as various travels around BC prior to his time in the work camps. Brown had weekends free and received some leave; a fellow Objector lent him a camera, which he used to document his work areas and living quarters, as well as recreational travels and off-camp activities. He sent the film back to Vancouver for processing.

The fonds includes three photo albums produced by Brown, and three files of textual records. These are comprised of personal and government correspondence and a diary.

The Ministry of Forests Lands and Water Resources Records series relates to Williams's time spent on the provincial cabinet working under the government of Dave Barret. Records consist primarily of correspondence, especially between Williams and major corporations and individuals in the forest industry. Other records include reports, studies, news clippings, bills and acts, speeches, presentation materials, and transcripts.

The Crown Corporations records series is comprised of documents stemming from Williams' activities as chair of ICBC, and his work in the Crown Corporations. Many records relate to the construction of Surrey City Centre. Record types include correspondence, reports, legal documents, and news clippings.

The Business, Personal and Academic Records series contains records related Williams’ business career, personal memories and diaries, pictures and travel memorabilia, and his experiences meeting other politicians. Record types include planning consultant studies, correspondence, interviews, and materials from his academic career including course outlines and reading lists.

The fonds consists of records related to Vancouver Status of Women’s (VSW’s) administrative activities, projects and lobbying endeavours, production, marketing, and distribution of Kinesis, their activities related to their advocacy function, and research and reference resources. Although the nature of VSW’s activities has changed over time, the organization has consistently maintained a commitment to addressing social issues related to women, including gender discrimination, pay equity, familial violence, racism, and many more topics. VSW has addressed these issues through a variety of avenues, including publications, press releases, lobbying of governments, a television program, workshops, and services for individuals in Vancouver. The fonds reflects these diverse organizational interests and activities in six series: 1. Administrative and executive; 2. Projects and lobbying activities; 3. Research and reference resources; 4. The Research and reference resources series comprises materials from third parties that VSW collected to support its research projects and the needs of its visitors. The Kinesis series includes records related to production, publication, marketing, and distribution of Kinesis, Vancouver Status of Women’ most significant publication in BC. The Kinesis photobank and production room materials series contains materials from the production room of Kinesis. Fonds consists of materials documenting the activities of the National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC) during four general time periods: the pre-redress period (including records by the National Japanese Canadian Citizens’ Association before it became the NAJC), the birth and development of the redress movement in the 1980s, the implementation of redress following the September 1988 settlement (1988 – 1992), and the post-implementation period (1993-present). The fonds has been arranged in the following seven series: NAJC Presidents, NAJC Business, Conferences and Other Events, Finance, Communications, Community Development, and Reference Material.

National Association of Japanese Canadians

Joan Gillis fonds

The fonds consists of the incoming correspondence to Joan Gillis from a group of young Japanese Canadians she met while attending Queen Elizabeth Secondary School in Surrey. The fonds includes 149 letters and 10 small photographs, referred to colloquially as ‘snaps’ in the letters, sent from a total of 13 different correspondents. The majority of the correspondence took place during 1942 to 1946, with different friends writing from farms and work camps in Northern British Columbia, Manitoba, and Alberta. The letters provide insight into the Japanese Canadian internment, which occurred against the backdrop of a larger cultural context. Since the early 1900s Japanese immigrants and persons of Japanese descent living in Canada were subject to racially targeted legislation, including limits on immigration, limits on fishing licenses, and being denied the right to vote based on racial status.

In the spring of 1941 the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) fingerprinted and registered all Japanese Canadians over the age 16, who were required to carry identification cards until 1949. Following Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941, Canada declared war on Japan. The Royal Canadian Navy impounded the fishing boats of the Japanese Canadian fishing community, and within two months 1,200 Japanese Canadian owned boats were sold. On February 24th 1942 the federal government authorized the removal of all persons of Japanese origin, and gave the RCMP the power to search without warrant, to impose a dawn to dusk curfew, and to confiscate all cars, radios, firearms, and cameras. Mass forced dispersal and dispossession ensued, with all Japanese Canadians being sent to internment camps, to work on farms, and perform other forms of hard labor, living in very poor conditions through the much colder winters of Canada’s interior.
The letter-writers discuss their day-to-day life at the camps, living and working conditions, their new schools and teachers, and ask after Gillis’ life in Surrey and the on-goings at Queen Elizabeth (Q.E.) secondary school.
Gillis kept the correspondence bound in twine or ribbon, which is also included in the fonds. A government censor opened and read many, if not all of the letters, and many of the envelopes bear a sticker or stamp marking this. Many of the letters are hand-written, some are typed, and some are written on postcards. Listed at the file level is the full name of each correspondent and his or her specific geographical location.

The fonds reflects Peter Cardew’s professional career as an architect, predominantly since 1966, the year that he emigrated to Canada. Over his career, Cardew designed schools, exhibition buildings for Expo ‘86 held in Vancouver, B.C., condominiums, private homes, office buildings, libraries, art galleries, retail establishments and furniture. Records include slides and photographs of buildings that may have served as inspiration for his designs, as well as those that he designed and built. Records also include building permits for select projects, and an exhibit catalogue for one of his best known exhibitions: Peter Cardew, Ordinary Buildings, an exhibition of his drawings first held in the Charles H. Scott Gallery at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver, B.C. Records also include numerous awards that Cardew received for his designs, certificates which document his membership in various professional associations, as well as posters for various speaker series in which he participated.
