Betty Clarke Pearson collection

This collection consists of correspondence and published materials gathered by Betty Clarke Pearson about the last voyage of Empress of Canada that was sunk by an Italian submarine on March 14th, 1943. Betty's father, John St.Claire Clarke, was the chief officer of Empress of Canada at the time of the attack. He survived while nearly 400 others were lost. Betty gathered these documents which include newspaper clippings, photographs, correspondence, and a memorandum speech, reflecting stories of her father along with other survivors of the attack.

Zeljko Kujundzic fonds

The fonds consists of records related to Zeljko Kujundzic’s role as an artist as well as his role as an educator. There are also records related to his personal life. The fonds consists of three series: artist records; teaching and professional records; and personal and administrative records.

Records relating to the first series, Kujundzic’s artist records are divided into two subseries: artwork and projects, and exhibitions and publicity. The artwork and projects subseries contains records related to the production of his artwork, including drafts, studio works, sketchbooks, writings, poetry, and research and inspiration materials. It also includes several pieces of Kujundzic’s artistic media, such as his metal moulds and woodblock prints. The subseries exhibitions and publicity consists of records relating to Kujundzic’s public appearances and the exhibitions and galleries he was part of. It includes magazine articles, newspaper and press clippings, artwork commissions, posters and pamphlets, and photocopies of articles about Kujundzic and his art.

Records in the series teaching and professional records relate to his role as a professor and as a member and director of arts societies. This series is divided into three subseries: Kootenay School of Arts, Pennsylvania State University, and Professional affiliations. The series Kootenay School of Arts contains records of Kujundzic’s time as a teacher in the Okanagan, B.C., and records relating to the Art Centre in Kelowna. The subseries Pennsylvania State University contains records related to his time spent with the Arts Department of PSU and consists of teaching, lecture and workshop materials, correspondence between faculty, and records relating to his role as a professor. Professional Affiliations subseries contains records relating to the associations and societies he was part of and some that he founded, including the Sculptors’ Society of British Columbia and the Contemporary Okanagan Artists.

Records in the personal and administrative records series includes personal correspondence made and received by Kujundzic, photographs, family and biographical records, CVs, applications, and immigration and travel documents.

Fonds consists of departmental records from Anthropology and Sociology (1964-2000); Canadian Sociology and Anthropology Association records (1970-1979); and material relating to the Simon Fraser University dispute concerning the Department of Political Science, Sociology and Anthropology (1969-1971). Ames assembled this group of records through his participation on the C.S.A.A. team, which studied the situation. The papers also include Ames's descriptions of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Museums Association (1980-1983) and the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (1967-1995). The material relating to the Shastri Institute includes records generated or collected by Ames and other members of the Institute at UBC. The names of other members are indicated in the file title. Also, the fonds contains manuscripts and drafts, records about Ames's research, courses taught by Ames, a variety of conferences and seminars, and records about Ames’ participation in several museum studies program reviews. Finally, the fonds also contain Ames' involvement with the Museum of Anthropology (MOA). Most records as Director and Acting Director of MOA are held at the MOA Archives. Alan Francis Brooks collection

Collection consists of scrapbooks, newspaper and magazine clippings, pamphlets, reports, correspondence, drawings, booklets, and maps related to Alan F. Brook's interest in hydroelectric engineering projects in the Pacific Northwest of British Columbia and the United States. The scrapbooks compile newspaper and magazine clippings that follow the development of the Columbia River Treaty between Canada and the United States from the mid 1950s-1970s, including information on the resulting Mica, Duncan, Keenleyside (formerly High Arrow), and Libby Dams. The majority of the material in the scrapbooks were taken from articles in The Province (formerly the Vancouver Province) and the Trail Daily Times. The collection also includes ephemera related to the Columbia Basin Project in Washington State.

Bamford family fonds

The fonds consists of diaries, scrapbooks, and correspondence spanning the period 1910-2003 and related to the professional and personal lives of three generations of the Bamford family—William Blackley Bamford, his son William Blackley Stanley Bamford, and his grandson William Huestis Bamford—as well as to members of the Lasell and Ord families, related by marriage to William Huestis Bamford. Diaries in the fonds include concise “five year” or “line a day” diaries, as well as more detailed daily journals and many cover aspects of the Bamfords’ professional and personal life.

Scrapbooks in the fonds, which contain newspaper clippings, ephemera, correspondence, photographs, notes, and other material, primarily reflect the Bamfords’ personal interests, but also interests their chosen professions and employers, including the Canadian Pacific Railway Company and the Bank of Montreal. Beyond the incoming and outgoing personal and professional correspondence included in the scrapbooks, the Esther Adelina Lasell Bamford series contains incoming correspondence related to a branch of the Ord family living in New Zealand.

The fonds also contains a Construction and Upkeep of House series with files related to the construction of the Ralston’s house on West 28th Avenue in Vancouver, built in 1969. The Educational Notes series includes notes written by Keith, Mollie, Bruce and Delia during their grade school and university educations, and includes notes from 1935 to the 1970s.

Fonds consists of laboratory manuals published by the UBC Department of Physics between 1949 and 1966 (most dated 1957-1962); mimeographed hand-outs for experiments and other assignments; hand-written lecture notes; and a 1944 Canadian Army physics laboratory manual. Many of the manuals are annotated. The manuals are bound, but the notes and hand-outs are loose; all have been placed in acid-free folders. They are arranged by course number, and then chronologically; unnumbered materials, and folders containing unsorted material from various courses, were placed at the end.
Fonds also includes promotional materials, many of which relate specifically to the Department of Physics at university-wide Open Houses, annual reports from the Department of Physics, notes made by Professor John Warren regarding x-rays and particle physics, as well as photographs taken of individuals, groups, and events related to the Department of Physics.

International Woodworkers of America-Canada Research Collection fonds

The fonds consists of records collected by Clay Perry related to the International Woodworkers of America – Canada (IWA). It primarily consists of records generated by the union in the course of its operation, records created by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who gathered surveillance on the IWA-Canada and its predecessors for several years, as well as research material collected and created by Perry himself, including transcripts of interviews, news clippings, scrapbooks, and pamphlets and booklets on unions in British Columbia.
The fonds is comprised of the following series: Union records series; Legal records and police files series; and Research materials series.

The Union records series contains records related to the main functions of the IWA, the WIUC, and IWA local chapters, including Local 1-357, of which Perry was a member. These functions included: financial administration, executive elections, producing literature and newsletters, strike activities, and correspondence. Record types include constitutions and by-laws of the union, conference materials, minutes of meetings, press releases, informational pamphlets, correspondence, bulletins and newsletters, news clippings, and executive reports.

The Legal records series contains records related to the IWA’s legal activities, including court disputes over negotiations, strikes, and employee and bargaining rights. It also contains records generated by the RCMP in gathering information on the IWA. Record types include court records, appeals, depositions, legal acts, and police reports on union activity.

The Research materials series comprises materials collected or created by Perry in his research of the history of the union. The series contains news-clippings and scrapbooks related to the IWA and the labour movement in Canada, research notes, transcripts of interviews and oral histories given by union members, publications related to the IWA, the labour movement, and communism, and theses of labour scholars on the IWA.
