The Malcolm Lowry Manuscripts Collection includes textual records, photographs, and a variety of audio-visual materials organized into sous-fonds by creator. The Collection is predominantly textual records; the majority of materials are correspondence and manuscripts, many of which have been microfilmed.

The core of the Malcolm Lowry Manuscripts Collection is the Malcolm Lowry Papers, and the content of the Collection is consequently thematic. Materials pertaining to Malcolm Lowry’s life and works were collected by RBSC from a variety of sources, including Lowry’s friends and family.

As of the 2023 rearrangement of the Collection, the records are arranged in sous-fonds as follows:

Malcolm Lowry Manuscripts Collection

Francillon and Nadeau Papers

The sous-fonds contains records relating to Malcolm Lowry accumulated by Clarisse Francillon, Lowry’s French-language translator, and Maurice Nadeau, who published several of Lowry’s works in French translation (Nadeau published Francillon’s translations of Lowry’s works). Contents include correspondence from Malcolm Lowry to Francillon, from Margerie Lowry to Francillon and Nadeau, from Harvey Burt and Victor Doyen to Francillon and Nadeau, photographs of Malcolm Lowry and a house in Cuernavaca, Mexico, typescripts and copies of published versions of The Last Address (Lunar Caustic), a typescript of The Bravest Boat, news clippings about Lowry and his works (mostly in French), a copy of Francillon’s translation of Lunar Caustic, and a French-language translation of Malcolm Lowry’s Collected Letters as prepared by Margerie Lowry and Harvey Burt and translated by Suzanne Kim.

Poetry series

Series consists of correspondence, manuscripts, legal agreements, royalty statements, financial statements, and book reviews relating to Wayman's poetry.

Tom Wayman fonds

The fonds consists of records pertaining to Tom Wayman’s literary career and his involvement with the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). Writing records include juvenalia, published writing, anthologies edited by Wayman, and correspondence with publishers, including royalty statements, book reviews, and legal agreements. Contents also include research materials Wayman collected for his various writing projects and correspondence with other writers and anthology editors. The IWW records include research on the IWW’s history, administrative records such as meeting minutes, publications (promotional and informational), and photographs.

Jack Shadbolt fonds

The fonds consists of Shadbolt's private journals, notebooks, lecture notes, sketch books from his work with the Art Students' League of New York, 1948-1949 as well as 6 sketchbooks from the 1960s, a collection of his loose drawings and studies, an extensive collection of photographs of Shadbolt's paintings, including colour transparencies, slides of a photographic work entitled "Year", family photographs, personal and professional incoming correspondence, his picture reference file of postcards and magazine clippings, exhibition catalogues and other printed material. Correspondents include John Macdonald, Wilfred Watson, Max Maynard, Jock Firestone, Molly Bobak, George Swinton, and Ron Thom.

The fonds consists of a single implied series of sound captures relating to broadcasts, which is comprised of one reel-to-reel tape recording. The recording captures W.A.C. Bennett’s funeral on February 27, 1979 in Kelowna, B.C. Bennett was the Premier of British Columbia from 1952-1972.

Professional activities series

Correspondence, reports, notes, photographs, and conference materials related to Sawyer’s professional activities as an educator, writer, curator, and independent consultant, as well as documentation and photographs associated with the administration of the Sawyers’ collection in terms of its use in exhibitions, its exchange/sale/donation, its appraisal, and provenance. Items in Box 64 were acquired in 2021. Items in Box 65 were acquired in 2022.

Box 63 includes 3 rolls of unprocessed or unused film.

Americas subseries

Photographic prints, slides, maps, and documentation depicting objects and sites related to ancient Andean societies. Includes some materials regarding North America, mainly focused on cultures of the Northwest Coast.

Visual materials series

Photographs (prints, slides, transparencies and negatives), drawings, and published and unpublished maps. Series is divided into subseries: Americas, Africa & Oceanic, and original negatives. Visual materials can be found in other series, notably in the professional activities and research materials series. Items in Box 64 were acquired in 2021.

Publishing & conference writing subseries

Academic papers and exhibition catalogues associated with various writing projects. Some materials for the published works relate to museum exhibitions can be found within the curatorial sub-series. Some overlap with the research material series, particularly regarding material prepared by others for conferences (see files: 24-19-24-61). This subseries is concerned with Sawyer's work. At the same time, the publications in the research material series involve the work of others.

Personal collection subseries

Provenance information, detailed inventories, conservation histories, sales and acquisition records, donation documentation and correspondence regarding exhibition and research of Sawyer's personal collection.
