The film “Initiation of a Dalai Lama” was brought to UBC by John Conway in May 1988 to be deposited with the records of TRAS. Documentation from 1970 with the film suggests the film was borrowed from UBC Audio-Visual Services Extension Department by Dr. Shotaro Iida for use by the Dalai Lama.

The Vancouver Women in Focus Society fonds reflect their activities in video production and distribution, gallery exhibitions, activism and lobbying, community engagement, and research. Materials include correspondence, office files, newsletters, grant applications, sales and rental records, legal documents, catalogues and bibliographies, clippings, posters and flyers, meeting minutes, books, newspaper clippings, and financial records. The fonds also contains several non-WIF records relating to feminist and women’s issues, general art and film, as well as local and federal politics that reflects the context of the time and place in which Women in Focus were operating.

Records relating to the first series, the Administrative series, includes files dealing with the maintenance and upkeep of the society such as: meeting minutes, sales and rental agreements, artist contracts, artist resumes, notes, lease information, WIF newsletters, and legal and court documents. The series also consists of two subseries: Financial and Correspondence.

Records relating to the second series, the Production and Distribution series, include files dealing the Women in Focus Society’s production and distribution of feminist video and film. Production records include: meetings and records from the production committee; files relating to various individual productions; and publicity for WIF productions. Distribution records include: distribution statistics; catalogues; distribution information and research; and distribution correspondences.

Records relating to the third series, the Gallery series, include files dealing with the Women in Focus Society’s art gallery events. Records relating to the fourth series, the Events series, include files dealing with the Women in Focus Society’s various events that they hosted or participated in. John Cooper Robinson collection

Fonds consists of over 4,600 photographic prints, negatives, glass lantern slides, and postcards, the majority of which were either taken or collected by Robinson. Many of the photographs relate to Robinson’s work as an Anglican missionary in Japan in the 1890’s through the 1920’s. These photographs document a unique time in the Japan’s history: the Meiji-Taisho period when the country was transitioning away from being a feudal society and beginning to open up to the West. This collection is one of the few comprehensive records of this time period. Subject matter of the photographs includes everyday life, work, and scenery in Japan, as well as the lives and works of missionaries.

Also included in the collection are photographs from Canada and the Robinson family’s travels around the world, as well as reproductions of missionary and religious texts or graphics.

While many of the photographs were taken by Robinson, others were taken by his children, professional photographers, or unidentified individuals.

The fonds also includes 10 maps of Japan used during Robinson’s missionary work, some with annotations of proposed Canadian jurisdictions in Japan.

Desmond Power 'Boxer Uprising' collection

The collection consists of a medal for bravery, likely awarded to a family member for meritorious service during the Boxer Uprising (義和團運動), which was a series of incidents in China with anti-imperialist and xenophobic roots that lasted from 1899 until 1901; and a fragment of a corresponding letter of recommendation. The medal was specifically awarded to the recipient for their conduct during the Siege of Tienstin, which was a major battle during the Boxer Uprising, and the letter of recommendation mentions a Mr. D’Arc, which is likely Desmond’s maternal grandfather who was a volunteer rifleman at Tientsin. Lastly, the collection contains an album consisting of photographs of Tientsin during and immediately after the Boxer Uprising. The album primarily includes photographs of troop movements and military equipment, but also includes a few personal family photographs.

The Irving Guttman Collection is a large collection of photographs of different people and places in the opera world. There are two different parts of this photographic collection: The first part of the collection includes pictures of Mr. Guttman directing and coaching opera performers, or posing with opera enthusiasts from across the globe. A large bulk of these first photographs are of Mr. Guttman's production of the operas, Norma, Tosca, Traviatta, and Aida. However, other operas such as Madam Butterfly, Daughter of the Regiment, Othello, Carmen and more are included in the Collection.

The second part of the collection consists of autographed portraits of opera performers, and other operatic stakeholders. The list of operatic singers, conductors, composers and directors, includes but is not limited to: Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Leonard Bernstein, Joan Sutherland, Cristina Deutekom, Montserrat Caballé, John Alexander, Tracy Dahl, Marilyn Horne, Linda Roark-Strummer, Huguette Tourangeau, Renata Tebaldi, Clarice Carson, Regina Resnik, Mary Costa, Irene Salemka, Cecilia Bartoli, Judith Forst, Ermanno Mauro, and Sylvia Sass.

Lastly, there is a collection of congratulatory letters to Mr. Guttman for his 25th anniversary as artistic director of the Edmonton Opera.

The collection contains records related to Oscar Orr’s career in law, his professional and political affiliations, and records relating to his role as a prominent resident in the province of British Columbia. There are also historical records that Orr gathered as part of his collection. The collection consists of five series: British Columbia records; American records; Canadian provinces and politics records; Britain and Europe; and Books and miscellaneous records. The series contain correspondence, autographed clippings and notes, invitations and miscellaneous documents of prominent political individuals, businessmen, and royalty.
The series British Columbia records contains Orr’s correspondence with prominent and political members in British Columbia in the early to late 1900s. The series includes the autographs of BC political members as well as prominent BC court officials. Also includes a letter from Dan Cranmer of Alert Bay regarding a possible potlatch. The series American records contains documents and autographs of prominent US political, literary, and war figures. Records in this series date back to the 18th century and were part of the collection Orr gathered as part of his interest in history. The series Canadian provinces and politics records include early 19th century documents relating to the Canadian political landscape as well as Orr’s own correspondence with Canadian politicians and court officials. The series Britain and Europe contains records and autographs of British and European political, literary, and military figures, dating back to 1698. Books and miscellaneous records include books, newspapers, photographs and other records from Orr’s collection that relate to his interest in history.

The majority of the collection consists of over 200 pencil handwritten copies of Martha May Beardmore’s accounts of her work during the First World War in Serbia and Salonika. Correspondence consists of Christmas postcards from his family in Finland and letters from his sisters, friends, and family friends describing their lives in Finland, which provides context about the impact that World War II had upon Finland and Finnish migrants to Canada. I.W.A. pamphlets describe the values, goals, and struggles of union workers in 1940s North America. Fonds also contains small pocket calendars or planners written in Finnish and denoting important holidays, metric conversions, and information about the United States.

The fonds consists of hand-written and undated poetry and prose written by W.R. Black from various locations including Whaleton and Squirrel Cove. Black's prose consisted mainly of editorial essays on various moral and religous issues as well as the Scottish people, and short stories.

The fonds consists of plans of fishing vessels built by W.R. Menchions for various companies and individuals including a seine patrol and towboat (1914-1915), cannery tender (1924-1926), seine boat (1925), and specifications and contracts for gasoline boats, seine boats and fishing boats (1914-1935). The fonds also includes one photograph of the vessel Frieda of the Kakiak Fishing Co.

The fonds consists of records reflecting the activities of the Guild as representative of seamen working on the west coast, hiring agency, collective bargaining body, and lobby group. The fonds includes minutes of Guild meetings, an extensive group of subject files, business records, and personal office files of Guild officers reflect the organization's active involvement in marine education, safety regulation development, marine standards, and open representation.

Western Miner fonds

The fonds consists of photographs of mines, mining activities, and mining personnel created and collected for use in the Western Miner and its predecessor publications, The Miner and the British Columbia Miner. Images include aerial views as well as ground level shots of mine sites, buildings, townsites, mining, milling, smelting and other mineral processing operations. The photographs include exteriors and interiors of mines and buildings, crews at work, and a collection of portraits of company executives, staff and Canadian politicians. Mining equipment is featured including excavators, diamond drills, continuous miners, loaders, shuttle cars, muckers, ore conveyors, and drilling rigs.

The fonds consists largely of print samples of commercial work produced by Hudson throughout his career as a fine printer. Print samples include commerical notices, leaflets, stationary, greeting cards, invitations, memorial notices, broadsides, cover proofs,etc. The samples include work for Gallelry Tantalus (Powell River), Alcuin Society, and the University of British Columbia.

William Cameron fonds

The fonds consists of records reflecting both Cameron's involvement with and perceptions of the Pioneer Strike. Clippings, minutes, correspondence, photographs and printed material record union and personal involvement in the strike and retrospective notes on events of the incident are included. Material relating to union recognition and working conditions at the Pioneer Mine is significant.

William Douglas Powell fonds

The fonds consists of drafts of a long version and a short version of an unpublished manuscript, "Running Scared", as well as notebooks and subject files dealing with the consequences of dieselization of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in the Revelstoke Division betweek 1957 and 1984. Powell collected extensive documentation from the relevant unions, Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen and the United Transportation Union, in response to this event and it is included in the fonds.
