Japanese-Canadian Commerce Students Collection

The collection consists of student records and correspondence between E.H. Morrow and Fred Sasaki, Oyama Kazuhiko, David Shiozake, Peter Yamada and George Yamashita (1940-1950). The correspondence files provide an account of the treatment accorded Japanese-Canadians in the 1940s. There is also a copy of an article from Viewpoints inspired by the information in the files, as well as some follow-up correspondence with the former students.

The fonds consists of records generated by both the Dept. of University Extension (1936-1969) and its predecessor, the Extension Lectures Committee (1918-1935). It appears that the records were re-arranged to facilitate the writing of Gordon Selman's history of the Department, and the original order was lost. The fonds has been arranged into the following series: Extension Lectures Committee; Department annual reports; general
records; professional and vocational education; the humanities and summer school; evening classes, lectures and correspondence courses; supporting services; pamphlets, brochures and course material; and Selman's own research notes. The fonds also includes a large number of photographs primarily from the 1950s and 1960s which depict campus events as well as people and buildings, as well as audio recordings of lectures and other events.

The fonds consists of records relating to Bawtree’s time on two important legislative committees: The Committee on Crown Corporations and The Select Standing Committee on Agriculture (SSCA). The SSCA was tasked by the Legislature to make a complete review of agriculture in the province, including the production, processing and distribution of food products within the province. As a result, there are reports from numerous meetings taken throughout different cities in BC from various agricultural groups that aided in the different phases of the research report on the entire food system of BC. The collection consists of more than 250 items documenting the work and life of composer Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky (1882-1971) including autographed letters, postcards, musical quotations, miniature manuscripts, photographs, programs and other printed material. Record types include correspondence, minutes of meetings, agreements, booklets, policies, reports, constitutions, information on other unions , booklets, financial and operating statements, ledgers, particulars on union members, manuals, arbitration cases, and reference material. The bulk of the records fall in the active period of the Union, which was between 1945 and 1980 ; a few records dealing with winding up the Union were also created in 1981 . Fonds consists of textual records generated throughout Dr. Miller's career with the Department of English. The records also illustrate some of his interests and activities outside the Department, including the Faculty of Arts Committee on Student Life; President's Committees on University Lectures, and Spiritual Life; the UBC Anglican-United Campus Ministry, and the Co-operative Christian Campus Ministry; the Humanities Association of Canada; and the Association of Canadian University Teachers of English.
The files are arranged in three series, representing Dr. Miller's spheres of activity: Department of English, University Affairs, and Outside Interests. Some files' contents overlap, particularly those dealing with the lecture committees and those labelled "English Department" and "Departmental Records" - however, the files and their contents were retained in their original order.

Most of this collection was assembled by William Tetlow of the UBC Office of Institutional Analysis and Planning, and consists of President MacDonald’s initial proposal to the Board of Governors and Senate as well as minutes and reports arising from the work of the Committee on Higher Education (1962/63). In addition, there are also copies of numerous briefs presented by community groups from throughout the province. Also included are copies of documents related to the Report, compiled by the President’s Office and sent to Simon Fraser University to help the SFU Archives document the origins of their university, and maintained as a potentially useful historical resource.

The Bush Family collection consists of records and objects gathered by various family members on specific holidays or during special occasions. George and Pearl Bush contributed memorabilia related to their family’s settlement in Vancouver, their vacations in Europe and the United States, the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, the city of Vancouver, the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, and the country of Canada. Some records and objects commemorating the Dominion of Canada and the Canadian Pacific Railway Company feature racist depictions of Indigenous peoples. Items originating with George and Pearl date from the early to mid-twentieth century.

Patrick Bush contributed memorabilia related to his studies at the University of British Columbia, particularly his graduation and his membership in the Sigma Epsilon chapter of the Zeta Psi fraternity. Records originating with Patrick Bush date from the mid to late 1950s.

Records are arranged by subject in files. For example, all memorabilia related to the Canadian Pacific Railway Company is aggregated, as are records of Patrick Bush’s university attendance.
