Frank H. Brown fonds

  • RBSC-ARC-1708
  • Fonds
  • [19--]-1988, pred. 1930-1975

The fonds is comprised of materials related to Brown's personal life (mostly recorded through photography) and his various professional positions, particularly his role in the White Pass & Yukon Corporation and its expansion into containerized shipping.

Approximately one third of the fonds is materials that have been condensed by Brown's descendants and filed chronologically. This portion has been called the Chronological papers, and materials related to all other series may be found there, as well as a wide range of personal materials.

The rest of the fonds has been divided into 10 series of: general correspondence; papers from Brown's two government posts; his work for the White Pass & Yukon Corp.; his work for MacMillan, Bloedel, and Powell River; his work as director for other companies; subject files related to his interests; speeches and articles he wrote; personal papers; and slides (both personal and professional).

Chronological papers

This series consist of papers which were condensed into a new chronological system before their donation to UBC. The materials are roughly chronological, and cover a wide range of topics, including papers with topics relevant to all the other series in Brown's fonds.

View-Master Reels

Several major subjects appear in these images: scenes of BC and the Yukon (including some related to Brown's directorships), scenes of Brown's Vancouver residence at 5850 Kingston Rd., scenes of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, scenes of Hawaii, and scenes of functions hosted by the Browns.

There are 10 commercially printed reels in this set, which cover the coronation, scenes of Hawaii, and scenes of medieval Bruges.

Personal and Professional Slides

This series consists of a photograph and many slides which were not in interfiled with Brown's other papers. The images consist predominantly of scenes from various parts of BC and the Yukon, as well as Brown's trips to Europe in the 1950s. A vast majority of the slides are stereoscopic, designed to produce a three-dimensional image when viewed through a special holder. Of these slides, the majority were processed by the View-Master company and are housed in the circular reels designed for View-Master viewers.

National Revenue (Taxation) - Personal corrrespondence and other papers

This series consists of materials related to Brown's ten months as Deputy Minister for National Revenue for Taxation. All official records related to his position remain with the government of Canada, so the papers here are personal in nature, including invitations to events, letters upon his appointment and resignation, and large prints of two comics based on his time in office.
