Journalism

This series includes drafts, correspondence, and clippings related to Coupland’s work as a journalist. Most records in this series were created while Coupland worked for the following periodicals:

Digital projects

The majority of records in this series consist of textual, photographic and graphic material related to the earliest iterations of Coupland’s website. In 1996, Coupland launched Coupland.com. This website incorporated prose pieces, various digital renderings of artwork he had created in the past and digital images and collages created specifically for the website. Material crated for the website also influenced Coupland’s later literary and visual art projects.

Dramatic projects

Series consists of records related to film, television and stage productions that Coupland has been involved with. Records include drafts of screenplays, scripts, publicity, props, call sheets administrative documents, set sketches, video cassettes, and other records related to the creation and publication of Coupland’s dramatic projects.

This series contains records related to the following projects:

  • Generation X (conceptual art video about the book, ca. 1992)
  • Hiroshima 95 peace commercials (texts from Life After God used for commercials)
  • MTV 30 second art films (ca. 1995),
  • Close Personal Friend (documentary written by and featuring Coupland, ca. 1995),

  • Mon Amour Mon Parapluie (in which Coupland appeared as an actor, 2001)
  • Analogs (screenplay written by Coupland and Ian Verchere, ca. 2000)

  • Everything’s Gone Green (film written and co-produced by Coupland)(ca. 2005)
  • Souvenir of Canada (NFB documentary adaptation of Coupland's book, featuring Coupland, 2005)

  • A Man, A Plan, A Canal (screenplay written by Coupland in 2006)

Visual art projects

Series consists of visual art objects (collages, sculptures etc.), preparatory notes and sketches, photographs of visual art objects, and publicity related to Coupland’s art installations. Documents, photographs and objects related to the visual art projects spanning Coupland's career from 1983 to 2012.

Pure Design catalog

Contains a catalog for Pure Design (Volume 8.0), which includes "Expo 67", a target-topped side table designed by Coupland.

Terry Fox sock

This item is a 2.5 m long fabric banner containing a printed image of Terry Fox's sock. The image is among those displayed around the Terry Fox Miracle Mile running track at Canoe Landing Park in Toronto, ON.

Coupland and McCarthy event invitation in Toronto

Contains a print-out of an event invitation hosted by Knopf Canada: "A conversation between Tom McCarthy and Doug Coupland about books, art and the meaning of it all", held October 30th, 2010 at the Rooster Cafe in Toronto.

Digital Orca maquette

This file contains a maquette version of the Digital Orca sculpture created by Coupland. Of particular interest is the variance in the base, as it was altered in the final creation because of engineering logistics and the difference in colour of the maquette.

Draft program of New Cities Summit Paris 2012

File contains a copy of the Draft Program for the New Cities Summit Paris 2012, Held May 14-16 2012 in Paris, France. Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson spoke at the opening plenary on May 14th, where he intended to unveil the V-Pole, designed by Coupland.

Paper Nests

In 2004, Coupland produced a series of paper nests, inspired by those that wasps create. To make these nests, Coupland hand-chewed pages from two of his novels. The series contains samples of this paper in various stages of being pulped.

Vancouver Magazine, featuring Coupland article

Contains an issue of Vancouver Magazine (March 1994), in which Coupland has an article entitled "This Bridge Is Ours" (p. 26-30), on the Lion's Gate Bridge. Article includes small reprints of several collages by Coupland accompanying the text. Coupland's article was featured on the title of the issue, under the heading "Life After Lions Gate: Second thoughts on First Narrows."

The Armory Show 2012 promotional materials

Coupland presented a painting (“Permanent Press Landscape”, 2012, Acrylic on Canvas) at the 2012 Armory Show in Manhattan, New York, (March 8-11, 2012) at the Art Dealers Association of Canada's booth (Pier 94, booth 829). This file contains an Armory Show Map & Show Guide, an Armory Arts Week Calendar, and a booklet on Coupland's exhibition at the ADAC booth.
