Kinsella following an article written by former lover and fellow writer Evelyn Lau, entitled "Me and W.P." that appeared in Vancouver Magazine (1997). Because Coupland had guest-edited the issue of the magazine in which the article appeared, he was also named in the libel suit, along with Jim Sutherland and Telemedia Communications, Inc. Ultimately the suit was settled out of court.
