Fonds consists primarily of textual materials related to Herring's forestry career. Materials related to his extensive interest in the forestry industry are also present, including documents related to various lectures and conferences in which he participated. Materials include correspondence, reference materials, maps, blueprints, financial documents, handwritten notes, and more.

Also included in the fonds are photographs, slides, and moving images; some of these are images related to forestry, while most show scenes related to Herring's personal interests and travels, many of which involve hunting and fishing, or attending Highland games and other cultural celebrations and events.

Forestry

Series consists of a variety of materials related to forestry. The majority consists of reference materials (clippings and published materials); there are also reports, correspondence, memos, business cards, measurement tools, newsletters, maps, diagrams, data printouts, brochures, manuals, and more.

This was the only series explicitly arranged and labelled by the records creator. It is not immediately apparent why these materials were filed together, while others were not. Materials related to some of Herring's consulting projects, as well as various other professional endeavours, are included; as a result, there is considerable overlap with the subject matter of other series.

Series title, file titles, and order of files, as they were given by the records creator, have been respected.

Slides

Series consists of images depicting Herring's travels, particularly in Alaska, and including a trip to Russia in 1965. Some relate to forestry; many relate to his personal interests, including hunting and fishing, bagpiping, and participating in various social and cultural events.

Moving images

Series consists of film reels and videotapes showing footage of Herring's travels, both work-related and personal. Most of these trips were in and around British Columbia and Alaska, but also include Scotland, Australia, Tasmania, Tahiti, and other locations within North America.
