[Miscellaneous labour organizing records]
Part of Jean Rands fonds
Part of Jean Rands fonds
Series reflects Jean Rands’s involvement in labour organizing in the B.C. lower mainland and in Saskatchewan, predominantly in the 1970s and 80s, both independently and in connection with the various unions and labour organizations she was part of. These include the Association of University and College Employees (AUCE), where she was a founding member; the Working Women’s Association (WWA), which disseminated information about labour issues faced by women; the Service, Office and Retail Workers Union of Canada (SORWUC), where Jean was a founding member and served as president at the national level; SORWUC Local 2, United Bank Workers; SORWUC Local 4, Bank and Finance Workers, where she served as president; Union Sisters, a grassroots group for women’s labour organizing in the B.C. lower mainland; and the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (UTFE/TFEU).
The records consist of documents arising from Jean’s involvement as an executive and active member of these groups, such as meeting agendas and minutes, leaflets and flyers, legal documents, conference planning records, and correspondence. The records also consist of newspaper clippings and articles on topics of women and labour issues, reflecting Jean’s ongoing interest in these topics throughout her life.
Collection consists of documents and maps that supported the findings in McDowell's book, Uncharted Waters: The Explorations of Jose Narvaez (1768-1840), published in 2015 by Ronsdale Press, Vancouver, BC.
All items in this collection are photocopies. The dates of the originals fall between 1788 and 1830. When available, information about the locations of the originals is specified in the file-level description.
From McDowell: "One of the least appreciated, but potentially most important set of historical documents in [RBSC] are those related to the overlooked Spanish navigator Jose Maria Narvaez (1768-1840), the first European mariner to explore the central and northern parts of what we now call the Salish Sea in 1791 -- one year before the famous captains Dionisio Alcala-Galiano, Cayetano Valdes y Bazan, and George Vancouver investigated the same inland sea. Although Narvaez's remarkable achievements and contributions were largely ignored, overlooked, or minimized until 1998, a more accurate assessment is emerging, and it has been supported significantly by the documentary information in [RBSC]."

Exhibition and Artist Catalogues
Part of Anna Banana fonds
Subseries is made up of publications collected by Anna Banana, especially books and catalogs, pertaining to exhibitions and collections of artists’ work. Banana’s involvement with the Mail Art Network often included showing her own work all over Europe and North America, by sending mail art, artistamps, drawings and other works to invitational shows and exhibits. Most of those shows in which she partook are noted with small bookmarks, often in yellow, showing those pages where her work is referenced, although not all of the files in this series pertain to her, or even the mail art network. This subseries spans across genres.
Subseries includes exhibition catalogues, publications relating to specific exhibitions, catalogues by artists, product catalogues, directories, some mail art projects which resulted in an exhibit or show, books published in tandem with an exhibit, as well as documentation about invitational shows or competitions. Banana did not distinguish between any of these items and generally categorized them under “Exhibit Catalogs,” “Mail Art Catalogs” or “Artist Catalogs.” The distinction between the items in this subseries and those of Books or Zines often seem superfluous and depend greatly on the whims of Banana’s own boxing system.
