Biographical history
The International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union in B.C. experienced a long transition into its present administration. The International Longshoremen's Association organized locals in Prince Rupert and Victoria in 1910 and in Vancouver in 1912. The Vancouver and Prince Rupert locals disbanded in 1925 and the Vancouver and District Waterfront Association was formed. In the 1930s, longshoremen were affiliated with the Vancouver Waterfront Worker's Association and several other organizations. The permanent establishment of the ILWU occurred in 1944. Within one year the B.C. locals were brought into a district council. The Canadian Area of the ILWU was established as an autonomous body in 1959.

Scope and content
The fonds consists of correspondence, agreements, subject files, work records, press releases, printed material and minutes pertaining to the activities of the union. Minutes of the Prince Rupert local and Great Northern Railway Section of Dock Employees for locals 501 and 507 are included. Subject files contain information on foremen's disputes and other strikes. The tapes consist of Canadian Area convention proceedings and caucus meetings. The cassette tapes were generated by an oral history project carried out by members of the ILWU Local 500 which led to a publication entitled "Man Along the Shore".

RBSC staff created an inventory for the fonds in 1992. In 2022, RBSC staff added an accrual to the fonds. A finding aid for this accrual has been added as an addendum to the original finding aid, available as an attached PDF. A box-file listing is available for the accrual as well. Updated series descriptions are included in the addendum.
