Biographical history

James Leathart and his wife were leading patrons of the Pre-Raphaelites. They were influenced to collect Pre-Raphaelite paintings by William Bell Scott who was director of the Newcastle School of Design (1943-1864).

The fonds consists of approximately 400 incoming letters from the Pre-Raphaelites (such as Ford Madox Brown, William Bell Scott, and D.G. Rossetti) and other nineteenth century artists to James Leathart and his wife (1853-1896).
