Biographical history

The John Howard Society of British Columbia was initially established in Vancouver in 1931 becoming the first John Howard Society in Canada. The objects of the Society as outlined in its Constitution (1932) were to seek to remove conditions wich lead persons into crime, to befriend the first offender, and to help discharged and parfoled men and women to re-establish themselves. In 1983, the John Howard Society of BC moved its head office to Victoria and acts as an umbrella organization for the various independent John Howard Societies operating throughout Briitsh Columbia.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of the records of the Mid-Island Diversion Programme, Nanaimo Area which the John Howard Society of Nanaimo has operated since December, 1975. The records consist of ca. 3000 case files that contain a personal information sheet, police record, runnning record sheet, letters of apology, general correspondence and closing report.
