Biographical history
Joy Nozomi Kogawa (nee Nakayama) was born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1935 to Japanese Canadian parents, Gordon Goichi Nakayama and Lois Masui Nakayama. In addition to the honorary degrees she received from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute and the University of Lethbridge in 1991, Kogawa has been granted degrees from Simon Fraser University, Laurentian University, and the University of British Columbia. She won many awards for Obasan including the Books in Canada First Novel Award, Canadian Authors Fiction Award, and the Notable Book Award by American Library Association. She also published a children' s book based on Obasan, Naomi's Road, in 1986, which was later adapted for a play . She was awarded the Order of Canada in 1986.
Custodial history
Except where otherwise noted, files described here and not in the PDF are from a 2012 accrual that was transferred from the Galt Museum in Lethbridge, Alberta. They were stored there for Joy for a number of years.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of material related to Kogawa's writing projects, her participation in literary, cultural, and human rights conferences and events, her involvement in community organizations, and her personal life. Fonds also includes some material accumulated by Kogawa's parents, the Rev. Gordon Goichi and Lois Kogawa. The fonds is arranged generally into series regarding Kogawa's written works; correspondence; documents related to conferences, speeches, organizations, and interviews; teaching materials; personal and legal records; family documents, other people's works; sound recordings; videocassette recordings; publications; subject files; and photographs.
