Shows remains of chimney bottoms. -- Man in center is Michel Pete, a Kootenay.

Message on back : "The site of "Kootenae House" built by David Thompson in July, 1807, situated at west side of Columbia river one mile north of and below Windermere lake and 1/2 mile from mouth of Toby Creek. The piles of rock indicate the chimney bottoms and the indian is Michel Pete, a Kootenay, Whose mother, aged nearly 80 years, identified the spot for him without reference to either map or books. This photo taken in August, 1912, by T.C. Elliott, F.W. Howay, and H.Ries.
