“Bezahlt” stamp

Item is a small rubber stamp featuring a single word: “Bezahlt” (Paid). The stamp-makers name and address is affixed to the wooden body of the stamp.

Adolf Ludwig Mandl

File consists of correspondence sent to Hanne by her long-time friend Adolf Ludwig Mandl, with the earliest letters dating back to Hanne’s days in Brioni, Italy.

Anton Drexler files

File contains records from Anton Drexler, property manager of the building owned by the Wassermann family in Vienna. Among these records is a document in which an unidentified party (presumably Hanne) gives power of attorney to Drexler for the purposes of managing the sale of the building. Other records are account statements for costs associated with building maintenance and upkeep.

Artefacts

Series consists of an assortment of what remains of Hanne's non-textual, non-photographic belongings, acquired throughout her life and kept until the time of her death. These artefacts pertain to her career, her work as a writer, and her everyday life. They include metal stamps (featuring photographs of Hanne and headings used in some of her pamphlets), administrative rubber stamps (featuring the address of her gymnastics school in Vienna), and a small leather change purse containing Italian currency. There is another leather purse containing keys and key chains. Other personal effects include two makeup applicators, a small cloth bag, two trinkets on a small chain, two porcelain coins from Germany, a metal Comité pin on green ribbon, and a plastic key chain in the shape of a British Columbia license plate.

Artefacts - Coin purse

File consists of a small leather purse containing Italian currency (the lira) totaling L.207.10. This money comes in the form of coins and bills.

Artefacts - Leather pouch containing keys

File consists of a leather pouch containing three keys (one of which is attached to the pouch and therefore both are counted as a single item) and four key tags. These key tags are circular plastic discs, each bearing different words: Hangekoffer Klein, Sofrankkoffer Innen, Schreibmaschine, and [illegible]. Only one of these tags has a key attached.

Artefacts - Metal engravings (for printmaking) and stamps

File contains metal and rubber stamps used by Hanne for the textual materials she printed related to her work as a fitness instructor, writer, and innovator. There are stamps of photographs of Hanne demonstrating poses, stamps of her name and the heading from at least one pamphlet, and there are rubber stamps that would have had more administrative purposes — one of these has the name and address of her gymnastics school while the other simply says “Bezahlt” (Paid).

File contains an assortment of other artefacts belonging to Hanne including two makeup applicators, a small cloth bag, two trinkets on a small chain, a metal Comité pin on green ribbon, two porcelain coins from Germany (Saxony), and a plastic key chain in the shape of a British Columbia license plate. There is also a flip book of images capturing Hanne demonstrating some stretches.

File consists of newspaper and magazine articles by and/or about Hanne, covering a range of subjects including her physical fitness method; her gymnastics school and her fitness demonstrations (accompanied by photographs taken by Trude Fleischmann); and athletics (summer sports, winter sports, and sports-related dangers). She also wrote about the latest trends in beauty, athletic fashion, and physical culture, as well as exercise for women and weight loss. In some of her articles Hanne advocates for swimming lessons for both adults and children, and in another article she discusses the importance of physical activity for children in general. Some of the publications feature in this file include “Mode im Bild,” "Die Elegante Dame,” “Ingesport,” and “Heft.”

Blank postcards

File consists of blank postcards collected by Hanne. These postcards feature images of Brioni, Italy; European architecture; works of art; and more.

British Columbia license plate key tag

Item is a plastic key tag in the shape of a British Columbia license plate. The plate number is TBA 517 and dated 1975. On the other side of the tag is text reading: "Finder deposit in mailbox T.B. Vets 530 W. Broadway, Vancouver 9, B.C."

Charles H. Lansborough correspondence

Subseries consists of letters and photographs sent to Hanne by her friend and fellow Austrian, Charles Lansborough (born Carl H. Landsbergh/Landsberger). Charles fled to London during the Second World War, where he established himself as an art expert/valuer. Charles and Hanne corresponded until his death in 1974. This subseries also includes two letters from Charles’ partner, Mina, who wrote to Hanne telling her of her friend’s death. The photographs in this subseries feature interior shots of a well appointed home. There are also photographs of Charles and Mina.

"Comité" metal pin

Item is a metal pin attached to a green ribbon. An image on the pin depicts a person and a hunting dog facing a stag with a small cross floating over its antlers.

Copper engraving for printmaking

Item is a copper plate engraving for printmaking which depicts an image of Hanne demonstrating one of her fitness poses. This image is printed in some of Hanne's published materials. It was wrapped in brown paper and includes a sample print on a small piece of paper.

Correspondence

Series consists of correspondence pertaining to the life and family members of Hanne. These materials take the form of letters, postcards, greeting cards, notes, and envelopes. There is also a small assortment of photographs. The majority of this correspondence was sent to Hanne, however, there are some letters that belonged to her mother, Hedwig Herrmann. The materials in this series cover a range of subjects including immigration during World War II, compensation for Jews persecuted during the war, Hanne’s career as a pioneering health and fitness professional (including letters of appreciation for her services), and personal correspondence from her friends and acquaintances. The series also includes correspondence and files related to the sale of a property in Vienna that was owned by Hanne and her sister, Elizabeth Fischer, and extensive correspondence between the sisters during the 1960s and early 1970s.

Correspondence from other family members

File contains letters from Hanne's nephews Peter and Fritz Fischer in New York. The nephews discuss the current events in their lives. Included in this file is photograph of Hanne at age 89, taken during a visit by Fritz and his wife, Herta, in Vancouver. There is also an undated card from Hedy and Alexander Wassermann, who may have been Hanne's in-laws from her first marriage.

Correspondence regarding sale of Vienna property

Subseries consists of materials related to a building in Vienna (62 Keiserstrasse) that was owned by the Wassermann family when they fled Europe. Records in this subseries document their efforts to appraise and sell the property; most of these records are pieces of correspondence between Hanne and her brother-in-law, Otto Fischer; the building’s property manager, Anton Drexler; and Hanne’s lawyer in Vienna, Dr. Gustav Rinesch.

Correspondence related to activities in Europe

File contains correspondence pertaining to Hanne’s health and fitness work in Europe, including letters from the Hotel Brioni (where she taught classes and gave lectures) and letters from several organizations in the UK where she provided lectures/demonstrations. These British groups were: the Municipal Training College in Brighton, the Medical Women’s Federation, and the Parents’ Association in London. There are also letters of recommendation, which describe Hanne's expertise in health and fitness, are from Dr. Loebel and Dr. Otto Frankfurter. (These letters may have been intended to aid Hanne with her immigration to the U.S.)

Correspondence related to activities in the U.S.

File contains correspondence pertaining to Hanne’s health and fitness work in the United States. Most of these letters are from Douglas Aircraft Company in Santa Monica, California, for which she provided a safety training course.

Correspondence related to fitness profession

Subseries consists of correspondence pertaining to Hanne’s career as a fitness professional in both Europe and North America. This correspondence includes notes of appreciation from former clients, letters of recommendation, letters related to programming Hanne offered in various countries, and more. There are also several letters from professional associations she was a member of, such as the Association of Physiotherapists and Massage Practitioners and the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy.

Correspondence related to postwar compensation

File consists of letters pertaining to the indemnity claims of Hanne and her sister, Elizabeth, following World War II, as victims of persecution. Correspondence is from Hugo Fischer (Hanne’s lawyer in Vancouver) and Dr. Gustav Rinesch (the Vienna-based lawyer the family relied on for any issues related to their earlier lives there). Some correspondence from Rinesch was sent to Hanne but addressed to her sister.

File contains correspondence sent to George by his brother, William (Billy) Orr Walker. The content of these letters includes descriptions of life in Northern Ireland (including the early stages of what became known as “The Troubles”), personal health issues, local information, and details about family. Some letters mention George’s daughter Norah and his ex-wife, Sophia Elizabeth Graham. On occasion, William also included newspaper clippings with his letters. William died in 1975.

Education records

File contains certificates of completion for Hanne’s studies in elementary school, secondary school, and college. As a post-secondary student at the Graphic Teaching and Research Institute’s School of Photography and Reproduction in Vienna, she studied such subjects as freehand drawing, geometric drawing, natural philosophy, and commercial arithmetic and business essays, in addition to portrait photography. This file also contains a handwritten document from the Rontgen Institute describing her time there working as a nurse, her training, and the reason she stopped working there. Additionally, this file contains two photographs depicting Hanne during her time at the Rontgen Institute.

Elizabeth Fischer correspondence

File consists of correspondence sent from Hannah’s sister, Elizabeth (Else) Fischer. These letters are all written in German, with the exception of one note on the back of a photograph and a typed letter written in the voice of one of Else’s dogs, addressed to one of Hanne’s dogs.

Empty envelopes

File consists of the empty envelopes found throughout Hanne’s papers. Senders include: the U.S. Department of State, Dr. Johannes Patzak, Societe Graphique in Vienna, and more. One envelope, sent from London to New York City in 1940 bears a large “Opened By Censor” sticker on one side. Hanne is the recipient of most of these envelopes, however, some are also addressed to her mother, Hedwig Herrmann.

Ephemera

Series consists of materials created or collected by Hanne throughout her adult life. Items include household notes, lists, ledgers, bills, and receipts; documents pertaining to her hobbies as a photographer and sculptor; newspaper/magazine clippings and photocopies; and materials related to Hanne’s interests in religion, health, and wellness. There is also an assortment of business cards and address cards, some of which have handwritten notes on them.

Ephemera - Business/address cards

File consists of business cards, change of address notices, and slips of paper bearing the names of individuals (sometimes with additional handwritten notes on them). Some of the cards belonged to: John A. Embry, Paul M. Marshall, the Duke of Di Spoleto, Adolf Ludwig Mandl, Constance von Linden, and Alfonso Froner. These cards can trace their origins to various locations: Austria, Italy, England, the United States, and Canada.

Ephemera - Health and wellness

File consists of materials pertaining to health and wellness, including handwritten notes (B.C. Medical Plan phone number; title of a book on women’s hygiene), an unfilled prescription, and a small pamphlet with information about edema and hypertension.

Ephemera - Hobbies and pastimes

File contains ephemera related to hobbies/pastimes of Hanne: photography, sculpture, and candle making. Items include handwritten notes related to types of film and formulas for developing negatives, bits of film packaging, typed notes on sculpture techniques, and typed instructions for making candles.

Ephemera - Household

File consists of miscellaneous household ephemera such as notepads (including one filled with lists and notes related to plants and gardening); gas mileage records (1951-1952); pocket books for recording phone number and addresses, including addresses from Vienna and several pages of North American addresses written on loose paper; bills and receipts for household services rendered (e.g. electricity bills), packages sent, purchases made. File also contains coupons, a copy of a Vancouver postal directory, a book of postcards from the Butchart Gardens, paperwork related to a car purchase, and more.

Ephemera - Newspaper/magazine clippings

File consists of newspaper clippings on a range of topics. There are several photocopied columns by John Nichol in The Telegram, as well as various human interest pieces from newspapers in California and British Columbia. There is also an article about artist Sophe Atkinson featuring a photograph taken by Hanne.

Ephemera - Other

File consists of miscellaneous ephemera created or collected by Hanne such as the ticket from Hanne’s entry in a mini glider competition (1917), handwritten notes, advertisements for books, the warranty for a watch/clock, the handbill from an art event, a wartime U.K. food rationing form, a “Know Yourself Through Your Handwriting” chapbook, and a pamphlet of new books from Paul Zsolnay Verlag publishing house.

Ephemera - Religion

File contains prayer cards depicting images of Christian artwork and Saints. File also contains a one-year membership to the Cenacle Crusade of Prayer.

European travels, landscapes, architecture, and boyfriend

File consists of photographs depicting Hanne’s European travels in the 1920s and 1930s, particularly in Austria, Italy, and Greece. Many of these photos reflect Hanne’s interest in hiking and the outdoors, capturing images of mountains, glaciers, lakes, rolling hills, forests, and shorelines. There are also pictures of villages and cities. Some of the places Hanne visited and photographed during this period include:

Photographs in this file also depict the architecture of the locations Hanne visited, as well as bridges, gates, and statues she encountered. There are also some pictures of Hanne’s friends. Present in the images throughout this file is a man who appears to have been Hanne’s boyfriend/lover; his name may have been Herbert, however, there are no obvious identifying details about him in Hanne’s collection. There are nude photographs of Hanne and this unnamed partner taken at a beach in what appears to be Brioni, Italy.

Fitness Instruction and Innovation

Series consists of materials pertaining to Hanne’s lifelong work as a fitness instructor and innovator, especially in the field of women’s health and physical fitness. Hanne developed a range of workouts, stretches, and exercise methods, many of which she chronicled in essays, newspaper/magazine articles, and lectures. This series includes manuscripts, writing drafts, and clippings by Hanne and others related to the topic of health and fitness. In addition to her role a fitness pioneer in the early half of the 20th century, Hanne also worked as an instructor, personal trainer, and massage therapist. This series includes the client ledgers Hanne kept during her time in Europe and North America.

Fleischmann textual records

File consists of a small amount of textual records related to Trude’s friendship with Hanne. There is a magazine clipping featuring one of Trude’s photos of Hanne, materials related to a lecture series Hanne held at Trude’s New York studio, and a single letter written to Hanne on the back of a photograph. This file also includes two empty envelopes from Trude's Vienna studio.

File consists of a single flip book, which captures Hanne demonstrating a set of two or three stretches. A crest on the front cover and outer case reads "Pocket-Kino Favorit".

Friends, family, and other subjects from Europe

File consists of photographs taken or collected by Hanne before she left Europe for North America. Most of the photos depict her friends and family, capturing scenes of men playing polo (PH-2428 to 2433), a dinner gathering (PH-2434 to 2440), and people enjoying themselves at the beach or on sailboats (PH-2441 to 2522). There are also pictures of what appears to be Hanne's apartment in Vienna (PH-2421 to 2427, PH-3144 to 3145), and some photographs of family/friends that may date back to the late 19th century. This file contains a photograph of Hanne's boyfriend, printed on a postcard and containing a message on verso (PH-4161).

George Dickson Walker

Series consists of materials related to the life of George Dickson Walker immediately preceding his immigration to North America and the rest of his time spent living both in the U.S. and Canada. The bulk of these materials is correspondence, however, other records include paperwork and ephemera related to his immigration process, official records (e.g. divorce application, official affidavit, etc.), and some research he had done, likely pertaining to his own personal writing.

George Walker correspondence

Subseries consists of correspondence mailed to George Walker since his coming to North America, except for two letters written to George by his wife, Hanne, during her transatlantic crossing several days before his. The subseries includes a large collection of letters from George’s older brother William (“Billy”) Orr Walker in Northern Ireland.

George Walker personal records

Subseries consists of records pertaining to the life of George Walker, including his immigration from Britain, official documentation (such as an application for divorce from his first wife or a photocopy of his death certificate), and personal papers such as notes for a sermon.
