Fonds consists of records created and received by the British Columbia Women’s Institute and its constituents and relate to the work done by members of the BCWI at the provincial level as well as its various local chapters. Records in this fonds consist predominantly of administrative records as well as the compiled research materials pertaining to the Women’s Institutes and notable figures within.

The fonds also includes documentation of the BCWI’s intersections with the FWIC and the ACWW. Fonds is arranged into five series: 1) Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada (FWIC); 2) Associated Countrywomen of the World (ACWW); 3) British Columbia Women’s Institutes (BCWI); 4) BCWI Districts; 5) Research files.

Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada

Series consists of records pertaining to the BCWI’s intersections with the Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada (FWIC), into which the BCWI reported. Documents in this series include publications printed by the organization, documents detailing the history of the group, as well as records relating to conventions hosted by the FWIC, where the BCWI was represented.

Series consists of records pertaining to various individual Women’s Institute districts and branches forming regional representation of the British Columbia Women’s Institute. Records in this series mostly pertain to the areas of finance, governance, activism, and correspondence. Other significant records include photographs, artifacts, ephemera, as well as arts and crafts. Series is arranged into files according to creating body.

Scope and content
Series consists of records pertaining to the British Columbia Women’s Institute (BCWI), administered at the provincial level. Activities represented include convention planning and delivery, governance and decision-making, financial management, publications and communications, crafts and fine arts, activism and lobbying, and educational initiatives. Across activities are diaries, artifacts, and photographs.

File contains photographs used in the first chapter of 100 Years of the British Columbia Women's Institute, 1909-2009, as well as a listing of the photographic subjects and the placement in the book.

Research files

Series consists of records pertaining to survey and compilation projects undertaken by Women’s Institute committees, informal working groups, and individual members in the pursuit of BCWI historiography. Two publications were released as a result of this research: 100 Years of BC Women’s Institutes (history) and 100 Women (biography). Series is arranged into files, each pertaining to an individual (biography) or branch (history).

Mission City

File contains annual reports, photocopied newspaper clippings, handwritten notes, a photocopied certificate of incorporation, and a short history of the branch.

Presidents

File contains photographs of past presidents and the 1990 BCWI conference, newspaper clippings, correspondence, an essay titled �A Tribute to Our Past Presidents,� a brief memoir, and brief biographies.

[100 Women of BC]

File contains photographs, a basket blueprint, a summary of the ACWW at the 1985 UN Women�s Conference, correspondence, and a copy of Bulletin No. 54 �Handbook of Women�s Institutes with Report of Advisory Board.�

Cowichan

File contains handwritten notes, information on the organization of the branch, newspaper clippings, a short history, minutes and a history of the branch set to a song tune.

Burquitlam

File contains a short history on incorporation date and staff members, a timeline of the branch, a handwritten note, a clipping from Modern Pioneers, and a newspaper clipping.

Port Coquitlam

File contains a brief chronology, brief histories, an invitation to the 70th anniversary, printed photographs, newspaper clippings, and correspondence.

Biographies

File contains biographies of various BCWI members, newspaper clippings, memorial programs, a mock-up for a BCWI centennial pamphlet, and an excerpt on Adelaide Hunter Hoodless from The Clear Spirit: Twenty Canadian Women and their Times.
