UBC Historic Photographs

The following photographs were photocopied from originals in Special Collections at the UBC Library. They were used by Ethel Warbinek in the book Legacy co-written with Glennis Zilm on the history of the UBC School of Nursing.

Dolls

Sheila Zerr writes “My fascination with dolls and nursing history began when teaching the history of nursing to first year students in 1971. At this time a display of portrait dolls illustrating the various historical periods of nursing was created. This collection has continued to grow and take form.” The changing costumes throughout the years provide insights into both the history of nursing and the changing perceptions of women in this role.

This series includes historical context for these dolls, including many photographs. Some information on the numerous displays of these dolls in a wide variety of venues is included. Sheila often collaborated with Glennis Zilm on the historical research.

Costumes

Sheila Zerr extended her interest in dolls to the creation of costumes for adults. These were often modelled by Sheila Zerr and others at nursing events, and mounted as exhibits.

Course Materials

Subseries consists of records dating from 1973 to 2011. Materials include articles, study guides and booklets. 1 DVD and 2 CD-R are included containing interviews performed for course teaching.

Archives Committee

The Archives, Artifacts, and Assorted Articles Committee of the BCHNPPG was formed ca. 1992 in order to accommodate artifacts and articles donated by individual nurses. In about 1993 or 1994, under co-chairs Brenda Flynn and Beverly Du Gas, the Committee became conscious of the need to preserve the group’s own records. The name of the committee was changed to the Archives Committee in 1996.

Subseries consists of committee records, including terms of reference and minutes of the Archives, Artifacts and Assorted Articles Committee, and records related to the development of the Group’s policies and procedures regarding archival material.

University of British Columbia

Subseries consists of academic work by Helen Niskala while taking courses at various times at the University of British Columbia. She continued to take courses in different subjects during the early stages of her teaching career.

University of Michigan

Subseries consists of records received by Campbell Jackson while obtaining a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Michigan, including transcripts of marks and commencement and convocation programmes.

Regional Reports

BC was originally divided into six regions: Vancouver, Vancouver Island, Kamloops-Okanagan, Fraser Valley, East Kootenay and Prince George (Northern Interior). Later representatives attended from the West Kootenay and the Northwest. Representatives from each region submitted reports and met, generally twice year, with the RPO to discuss matters of common concern. These meetings were often scheduled to coincide with meetings of the Provincial Executive.

Subseries consists primarily of reports submitted by the different regions.

Planning / Workshop Committee

Subseries consists of minutes, correspondence, reports and working papers of the Community Health Nurses’ Group’s Planning Committee, which was responsible for planning workshops, conferences, and related events.

Conferences and Photographs

Subseries consists of records and graphic material relating to conferences and displays. Materials relating to the International History of Nursing Conference hosted in Vancouver, 1997 are included. Extensive photographs and textual materials document the many displays prepared and presented by the BCHNS.

Theses, Papers and Dissertations

Subseries consists of theses, paper and dissertations written by nurses for various institutions dating from 1947 to 2012. Some dissertations remain in relevant fonds, if applicable, otherwise these materials are listed under this subseries.

History of Nursing Group Displays

The collection consists of a record of B.C. History of Nursing Group displays from 1997 to 2001 in the Woodward Medical Library, the Board Room of the Registered Nurses Association of B.C. building, and the lobby of the RNABC building, with a file of photographs from the Royal Columbia Hospital Nursing Week in May 2006.

The first displays were presented in nine glass cases in the Woodward Biomedical Library at UBC during the spring and summer of 1997 in connection with the International History of Nursing Conference and the Congress of the International Council of Nurses.

In early 1998 the group purchased a display cabinet for the Board Room of RNABC at 2855 Arbutus, Vancouver. At this time the Group also began nursing displays on a bulletin board at the RNABC Library.

In April 2000 the Group purchased a wood and fibre glass dress form to display period nursing uniforms in the lobby of the RNABC building, and further promote interest in the history of nursing.

The majority of the work spent in co-ordinating recent displays, keeping records, and gathering this material, was done by Jill Thompson-Beaudreau, who died in November, 2001. Others involved in the creation of displays include Irene Goldstone, Helen Shore, Janet Gormick, Sheila Zerr, Beth Fitzpatrick, Glennis Zilm, Ethel Warbinek and Nina Rumen.

Most (not all) files contain photographic records of the displays, and most include some description of the exhibit, including the location and the creators of the display.

Diploma Articulation Committee

The membership of the committee is comprised of representatives from nursing programs in colleges, universities and hospitals. This committee provided a forum for the exchange of information on common problems in different institutions and identified the needs and opportunities for ongoing development. It may advise the Academic Council regarding the equivalency of courses given at one institution or university as compared to courses given at another institution or university. Because of budget constraints and the similarity of the work of this committee to the Nursing Education Council, it appears to have been disbanded in about 1983.

Subseries consists of minutes, correspondence and reports.

Miscellaneous Writings

Subseries consists of miscellaneous writings by Blais, including an article “About Retiring”, which appeared in both The Canadian Nurse and History of Nursing News, “Energy Healing in the Operating Room Works!” in Balanced Life, interview notes, “Member Bio”, what appears to be an unpublished book review of Forging the Future by Diana J. Mansell, and a handwritten “10 Minute Shaman Journey”.
