Writing and Editing

Series contains correspondence, minutes of meetings, notes, drafts, grant applications, transcriptions of interviews and conference proceedings, research material, news clippings, photographs, audio recordings, and other records related to Miki’s writing and editing activities and his role in organizing conferences for which he subsequently edited or co-edited the proceedings. Sub-series relate to monographs, journals, and conference proceedings that Miki wrote, co-wrote, edited, and co-edited, and other writing, editing, and lecture projects. Multiple and successive drafts of manuscripts document the development of Miki ‘s compositions.

Japanese Canadian Redress and History Records.

Series consists of records related to Miki’s activities with several voluntary Japanese Canadian cultural and political organizations, files related to Miki’s research on redress issues, and the records of two other individuals, Cassandra Kobayshi and Randy Enomoto, with whom Miki worked with in the course of his involvement in the redress movement. The series contains agendas and minutes of meetings, correspondence and memoranda, notes and notebooks, drafts of manuscripts, reports, news clippings, published guides, financial reports and proposals, conference programs, transcripts and audio recordings of forum and symposia proceedings, meetings, and other events, research material including articles and essays, serials, legislation and other records. The series documents the Japanese Canadian redress movement generally and Miki’s work in that movement particularly.

Ephemera and Memorabilia

The series consists of newspaper clippings from local, national and international sources in English and Japanese, pamphlets, posters, and brochures related to various subjects including Japanese Canadian redress, other racial issues in Canada, and literary acknowledgement for Miki’s many publications. The series also includes a year book and photographs from Miki’s High school education and slides from an overland trip from Japan to Spain, and slides from Expo ’70 in Osaka. Also included are several notebooks from 1988-2015.

General Files

Series consists of records related to Miki’s literary, cultural, political, and academic activities. The series contains conference programs and abstracts, correspondence, travel itineraries and invoices, notes, reports, news clippings, forms, grant applications, research flies, articles, essays, and scripts, publication agreements, Miki’s curriculum vitae, audio and video recordings of conference proceedings and of Miki speaking, reading, performing, and being interviewed, award plaques and certificates, posters, and other records documenting the range of projects and activities that Miki has been involved in over four decades.

Teaching and Academic Records.

Series consists of correspondence, pamphlets, poems, minutes, reports, applications, evaluations and other records pertaining to Miki's teaching and academic activities. Includes correspondence between Miki and colleagues at Simon Fraser University (SFU) and other academic institutions, as well as correspondence relating to Miki’s research activities and his involvement and communication with various interest groups and associations. Series also includes projects, papers, correspondence and evaluations relating to courses taught by Miki at SFU, publications by writers who Miki arranged to have visit SFU, and reports, correspondence, and applications pertaining to Government grant and work study funding of projects proposed by or supported by Miki. Series also includes minutes and related correspondence and reports of a committee to establish a Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing at SFU.

Personal and Miscellaneous Correspondence.

Series consists of personal and miscellaneous correspondence of Miki, including letters. greeting and post cards, pamphlets. booklets, poems, and photographs. Includes correspondence with other writers, friends, colleagues, and students, as well as with publications to which he sent submissions. Includes also some correspondence of an academic nature.

Interview and Sound Recording Project Records.

Series consists of transcripts of Miki’s interviews with Eli Mandel and Robert Kroetsch, and correspondence and permission slips concerning a studio recordings project organized by Miki. Also includes recordings of interviews conducted by Ann Sunahara of J. Tanaka, Charlie Tanaka, Kinzie Tanaka, George Tanaka, and Harold Hirose, and interviews of other important figures of the Japanese Canadian community and redress movement.

UFFI Action Association

Series consists of the records Miki’s involvement as a member of the UFFI (Urea Formaldehyde Foam Insulation) Action Association and includes correspondence, budgets, copies of completed application forms for the Canadian Home Insulation Program, handwriting notes, photographs, minutes of meetings, contact information for members, and association by-laws.

Redress chronology

Series consists of journals and calendars which provide a chronological list of events related to the Japanese Canadian Redress, including meetings, events as well as information about grants and funding, and contact information for individuals involved with the movement.

Literary and Cultural Events and Conferences Participation Records.

Series consists of correspondence, programmes, papers, and press clippings relating to Miki’s organization of and participation in literary and cultural conferences, panels, talks, and other events, locally, nationally and internationally. Cultural events concern racism, ethnicity, multiculturalism, and the Japanese Canadian experience.

Awards and Honours

Series includes certificates, programs and letters of congratulations, and plaques for various awards (including the Order of Canada and Simon Fraser University Alumni award) and honours bestowed upon Miki.
