Fonds includes 8 notebooks, 7 of which are manuscripts of lecture notes taken by the Doctor’s father, also named Jacob Edwin Brouse, while studying at McGill University between 1858 and 1961. The last item, an appointment book created in 1898, shows records of Brouse’s hospital patients after opening the Slocan Hospital.

The collection consists of photocopies of legal and financial documents including receipts, promissory notes, orders, agreements which relate to the business transactions of Kwong Lee and Company, Sansum Copper Mining and the Grouse Creek Flume Company.

The collection consists of research materials collected by Frank Tester and Glenn Drover. A large part of the fonds consists of newspaper clippings from the 1980s and 1990s related to Canadian and international Indigenous issues. Also included are copies of British Columbia provincial statutes and regulations dealing primarily with local First Nations issues, reports, and other materials documenting Indigenous communities' history in British Columbia and throughout Canada, focusing mainly on child welfare issues.

The collection also incorporates materials collected by Glenn Drover, former Director of the School of Social Work (1983-90). Drover was an accomplished scholar and a dedicated advocate for social justice in Canada and globally. He was recognized for his lifetime contributions to Canadian social work when the annual national social worker award was named the Glenn Drover Award for Outstanding Service. He worked with the Cree in the North, with youth in New York City, people in various countries of Africa and Asia, and various social welfare programs.

The fonds consists of legal documents collected by John Keenlyside over the last thirty five years. The documents give insight into the formation of British Columbia's legal system when it consisted of two colonies. The legal records (including writs, testimony, judgements, and other court documents) were produced by judges, magistrates, defendants, claimants, and other relevant parties. Some figures of historical significance who created legal records in this fonds are the first judge in BC, the first Attorney General, and BC's earliest clergy, businessmen, and other prominent figures from the colonial period.

This fonds also consists of documents related to the British Columbia Provincial Police force and various Japanese-Canadian and civil rights groups.

The fonds consists of four series. The first consists of the papers of Henry Forbes Angus and include an autobiography, reports, memorabilia and photographs. The second series, which pertains to the career of Annie Angus, includes reports, speeches, and notes relating to her work in the Vancouver School Board, the Children's Aid Society of Vancouver, and the University of British Columbia. The third series consists of older family papers, including original letters to Henry Dunckley, who was editor of the Manchester Examiner and Times (1855-1889). This series also includes letters to William Angus, William H. Dunckley, and the diaries of Mary E. Angus. The final series is primarily composed of books and articles by Henry Angus relating chiefly to economics, immigration, and university government.

The fonds consists of records related to British Columbia politician and judge Alexander Malcolm Manson's life. The records in this fonds encompass all aspects of Manson's life and were produced both through his career and in his personal life. Notably, the fonds contains extensive records from Manson's political career, his judicial career, and the investments and trusts he managed. Many areas of Manson's life overlapped considerably, including overlapping careers, and records related to one area of his life may be found among records related to another area.

The contents of this fonds consist predominantly of correspondence, including carbon copies of correspondence sent by Manson. This correspondence pertains both to Manson's career as well as to various parts of his personal life and has been arranged according to the file names used by Manson wherever possible; correspondence that has not otherwise been sorted by Manson has been sorted as "general correspondence," a designation which also includes personal correspondence. Other types of records in this fonds include meeting minutes, court proceedings, financial statements, newspaper clippings, governmental reports, shareholder reports, certificates, invitations and event programmes, and photographs.

The fonds has been arranged into eight series: legal career; political career; judicial career; finances; personal life; Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; general correspondence; and photographs, scrapbooks, and ephemera.

Collection consists of historical material regarding the Pre-Raphaelite artist and illustrator Arthur Hughes collected by Leonard Roberts and Maj. Greville Chester. The collection includes a large body of correspondence from Arthur Hughes to Susan Lushington, a variety of letters to other correspondents, 9 photographs of Hughes and his wife and daughters, examples of Hughes' illustrations and research materials such as family notes and reminiscences and copied articles.

The Uno Langmann Family Collection of B.C. Photographs, donated by Uno and Dianne Langmann and Uno Langmann Limited, consists of more than 20,000 rare and unique early photographs from the 1850s to the 1970s. It is considered the premiere private collection of early provincial photos, and an important illustrated history of early photographic methods. The photographs were taken by a wide range of photographers. Some well-known photographers represented in the collection include William Notman, Charles MacMunn, Frederick Dally, Charles Horetzky, Charles Gentile, Philip Timms, Yucho Chow, R. Maynard, and Leonard Frank.

The fonds consists of correspondence, photographs, sound recordings, and notes produced by McAlpine (formerly known as Mary McAlpine Dodds) and related authors, friends, and family. Correspondents include Ethel Wilson, Wallace Wilson, Margaret Laurence, Beverly Mitchell, Nan Cheney, Dorothy Livesay, and others.

The fonds consists of articles, reports and government publications that were amassed by Duff and are related to land claims, government papers, treaties and matters related to Indigenous communities. Included are records on councils, associations and committees, meeting minutes, documents, educational materials, and media-associated materials such as bulletins, Indigenous newspapers, newsletters, and brochures of organizations.

The Macintosh Collection was created by Sir Robert Reynolds Macintosh, a Nuffield Professor of Anesthetics at Oxford. The collection consists of the documents relating to the life and research of anesthetist Joseph Thomas Clover. In addition there are correspondence, research and notes written by Sir Robert Macintosh, which were collected during his research into the life of anesthetist John Snow. There are also notes and correspondence by Dr. K Bryn Thomas, a visiting medical historian and anesthetist who arranged, catalogued and annotated the collection in 1971. Throughout the collection, there are various notations, transcriptions and notes written by Dr. Thomas that occurred during his processing of the collection. The current arrangement of the collection is still largely the arrangement applied originally by Dr. Thomas.
The materials related to Joseph Thomas Clover spans the beginning of his career until the end of his life. They include obituaries and eulogies of his death (1882-83), and articles in magazines on Clover after his death (1913, 1928). There are photographs of Joseph Thomas Clover and his wife, Mary Ann Clover in various poses and a small, hand-drawn family tree of the Clover family. Clover’s observations, patient notes, hand-draw sketches of anatomy and apparatus and even some small books Clover used for financial recordkeeping, are present, some in small, bound volumes and others in loose pages. Clover’s original article of indenture (1841) and testimonials regarding his qualities as a doctor are also present. Correspondence within the collection include discussions on anesthesia, requests from patients and for apparatus, letters of condolences Mary Ann Clover after the death of Joseph Clover (1882) and letters to Clover’s daughter regarding her father’s legacy (1913). A small amount of the letters has been transcribed by K Bryn Thomas and present in the correspondence section. There is a small collection of cards bearing advice and quotations from Clover’s father, J.W. Clover, pertaining to weddings, finances, and life, as well as Clover’s own notes on God and life (1859-65). There are also several sheets of pressed flowers.
The second portion of the Joseph Thomas Clover collection was organized by subject matter by K Bryn Thomas. The sections are largely undated and cover Clover’s notes on ether, nitrous oxide and ether, chloroform, nitrous oxide, as well as a large amount of hand written notes covering various anesthetic subjects. Clover’s notes also discuss the deaths from chloroform and resuscitation. There are also hand-drawn illustrations of various apparatus inventions and experiments.
The third section of the collection contains the material collected by Sir Robert Macintosh during his research into anesthetist John Snow. This section contains biographical sketches by Sir Robert Macintosh, letters of correspondence between John Snow’s descendants and Sir Robert Macintosh, and a speech given regarding John Snow in 1955. There are a few correspondences regarding the gifting of Snow’s book <em>On Cholera</em>. A transcript of Snow’s article <em>On Asphyxia</em> is also contained in the collection. There are also copies, transcripts, and correspondence relating to Snow’s will, and his burial certificate. The remainder of the collection consist of items about John Snow, including correspondence to his descendants regarding his memorial tombstone, correspondence to his publishers regarding his books, and items written about John Snow himself.

The fonds consists of correspondence, drafts, essays, lecture notes, course outlines, clippings and research materials created and collected by Ormsby in her diverse roles as student, professor, researcher and author. Also included are records generated between 1957 and 1967 by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada.

The fonds consists of textual and photographic records relating to personal, business and financial matters of the Wilkinson family and their lives in British Columbia in the twentieth century. The fonds includes individual photographs and a photograph album depicting locations of the lower mainland and Vancouver Island, student group photographs and images of family members and individuals. The textual records pertain to the personal correspondence of the members of the Wilkinson family, school records, an appointment book, a diary, sketchbooks of international travel, personal financial records and statistical records relating to British Columbia logging practices.

The fonds reflects George du Maurier’s life and career as an illustrator and writer. Graphic materials include 66 hand drawn illustrations and cartoons for Punch or Once A Week magazines as well as for books he authored himself. These graphic works were drawn primarily with black and brown ink or with graphite from 1856 through to his death in 1896. Also included with his graphic works is a print from the 1896 edition of Vanity Fair magazine. Records relating to personal correspondence written by or for du Maurier are also included in the fonds. First editions of "The Martian", "Trilby", and "Peter Ibbetson Volumes I and II" by du Maurier, as well as "Pictures of Life and Character" by John Leech and "Americans" drawn by C.D. Gibson, were also donated with the fonds that are now catalogued and available in the UBC library.

This group of letters consists, with minor exceptions, of correspondence from Sister Mary Gonzaga (Georgiana Barrie) (1825-1873), a Sister of Mercy from Bermondsey, to her sister Julia (Mrs. Edward Boodle) during the Crimean War. There are a few letters that were written after the Crimean War. A few letters were written by Mrs. Boodle to Gonzaga and one letter was written to Boodle by Alfred Green. There are also assorted reproductions of photographs, certificates, and drawings related to Sister Mary Gonzaga and the Sisters of Mercy.

The collection consists of a letter from Sir John Franklin, Great Bear Lake, to Robert McVicar, 1826; a telegram from S.L. Tilley to Hon. Dr. Helmcken, April 1, 1871, referring to the admittance of British Columbia into Confederation, a document signed by Charles Dupont referring to a land transaction to what is now known as Vancouver, and an invitation to the opening of the new Parliament Buildings in Victoria, 1898.

The Reg Innell Collection of Shelleyana consists of ephemera related to Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of the major English Romantic poets, collected over many years. Materials include scrapbooks, a photograph album, prints, newspaper clippings, postcards, letters and a medallion bearing Shelley’s image.

The collection is comprised of family records of the Darwin Fox family. Most of the collection consists of letters and observations, with a few photographs and newspaper clippings. The dates range between 1821 and 1935. There is a great variety of content and correspondents. The principal correspondents are William Darwin Fox (1805-1880) and his cousin Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882). Others include the Rev. W.D. Fox, Henry Doubleday, William C. Hewitson and Richard Owen. Many of the letters are detailed accounts of supplies the various men have and need in their pursuit of “natural history”. Much of the discussions in the correspondence and the written observations concern insects, birds and eggs. In addition, there is correspondence relating to familial matters between family members.

The fonds consists of financial records of the Humbird family and records of various companies in which they had interests, including: Victoria Lumber and Manufacturing Company, Limited; Clearwater Timber Company; Humbird Lumber Company, Limited; Jacob Humbird Holding Company; White River Lumber Company; and Seaboard Shipping Company Limited.

Fonds also includes photographs, family financial records (distinct from company financial records), legal records, maps, correspondence, and press clippings. Photographs include photograph albums of the Victoria Lumber and Manufacturing Company Limited, an album of photographs pertaining to the family's interests in Mason and Clayton, Wisconsin, and Sandpoint, Idaho, and photographs of family members and employees of the companies. Family financial records include records pertaining to the estates of Jacob Humbird and the elder John A. Humbird, as well as financial record books of John A. Humbird and Thomas J. Humbird. Legal records include contracts, tie notices and permits, wills, and various land use records. Some maps show various company holdings, others are road maps. Correspondence is divided between company business and historical research about the companies (by family members). Press clippings are predominantly about the Chemainus and Mason operations.

The fonds consists of papers, reports, printed material, essays and photographs created and acquired by Parminter in the course of his time as a student, professor and regional inspector, as well as some personal items. The fonds is divided into three series: Regional Inspector of Indian Schools, University of British Columbia and Research/Miscellaneous Material. The fonds had no discernable original order associated with them and so the archivist decided to arrange them by series.

Fonds documents G.G. Moe's professional activities as professor of agronomy and as a member of various university and agricultural committees, as well as his personal and family history. It consists of correspondence, reports, minutes of meetings, course outlines, newspaper clippings, legal records, publications, notes, an autograph book, and photographs.

Collection consists of letters from prominent scientists in various fields of study. Many of the letters in this collection are addressed to Dr. Chauncey D. Leake.

Some of the letters contain discussion of a scientific nature, while others contain pleasantries, invitations, and discussion of scientific publications for collecting purposes. Some of the notable correspondents include Sir Richard Owen, Sir Francis Galton, Joseph Dalton Hooker, William Jackson Hooker, Sir Frederick Grant Banting, Adam Sedgwick, and James Prescott Joule.

Collection contains correspondence relating to Florence Nightingale. The majority of the letters are addressed to Nightingale while others are sent from her or involve other correspondents discussing Nightingale. Letters date from 1877 to 1965. There are also newspaper clippings, transcripts, notes, and envelopes that all relate to Florence Nightingale. There are also photographs of Florence Nightingale and prominent people in her life.

Collection consists of letters addressed to Dr. Alexander Marcet, one from William Prout and the remainder from William Chas. Wells. The letters date from 1811 to 1817. The letters discuss various experiments on urine, the research of Professor Prevost on radiant heat, and Mrs. Marcet’s work on political economies.

The fonds reflects Philip J. Thomas’ involvement with the folk song community. This includes his research into British Columbian folk songs and his publications on the subject. The fonds also reflects his role as an art teacher, including cards he received from his students and photographs of paintings created by his students. The fonds also contains evidence of his personal life and career, both prior to and during his involvement with the folk song community, and some evidence of his role as a musician, including records related to performances and musical composition.
Material includes articles, music sheets, correspondence, photographs, and a film reel. The first three accruals of the fonds were arranged into three series: Research, Publications, and Folk Song Societies and Festivals. Upon receiving the 2020 accrual, the archivist added the following three series: Music, Art, Personal and Career.

Fonds consists of materials which document and reflect Charles Humphries' involvement with the Historic Sites and Monuments Board, and the Provincial Heritage Advisory Board. The fonds consists of biographical information, correspondence, publications, news clippings, photographs, awards, reports, diaries and ephemera, which belong to or were written/created by Lyle Creelman.

Items in the collection were gathered by Barbara Hodgson. Many of the items were reproduced in Hodgson’s non-fiction publications In the Arms of Morpheus: The Tragic History of Laudanum, Morphine and Patent Medicines (2001) and Opium: A Portrait of the Heavenly Demon (1999). Hodgson was particularly interested in representations of opium production, transportation, sale, and ingestion, as well as similar representations of laudanum and patent medications containing morphine. Geographical areas depicted include China, countries in South Asia, and countries in the Middle East. Many representations of opium ingestion in the collection are orientalist in nature; individuals who have South Asian, Chinese, or Middle Eastern heritage are depicted in a racist, exoticized manner by Western film or medicine companies in order to lend an aura of “glamour” to various products.

The collection spans 223 books searchable through the UBC Library Catalogue and the following archival files created by Hodgson: Trade Cards; Postcards and Stereo Cards; Movie Stills; Portraits of Writers and Performers; Pharmaceutical Documents, U.S. Federal Order Forms, Medication Advertisements, and Stamps; Print Copies of Engravings; and Canadian Customs Tariff Book, 1897. As is apparent from this list, archival documents were aggregated based on their form. Principle documentary forms in the collection include the following: trade cards created by Victorian-era patent medicine companies; postcards; stereo cards; film stills from a variety of films; copies of film reviews; photographs; postage stamps; advertisements; handwritten prescriptions; pharmacy stock lists; U.S. Treasury Department order forms; anti-narcotic postage stamps; a package of Stanback Headache Powder; print copies of engravings; and a Canadian customs tariff book from 1897.

The fonds consists of a bound, handwritten transcribed copy of Robert Haswell's log of the Columbia, which chronicles two trips of her sister ship, the sloop Washington, to the vicinity of the Strait of Juan de Fuca in 1789. The fonds also includes a photostatic copy of Captain Robert Gray's log for the Columbia in 1791. It records voyages along the northwest coast of Washington State and British Columbia.

The fonds consists of materials created, received or collected by various members of the Haweis family. The family members represented in the the Haweis family fonds include Lionel Haweis, his father and mother Reverend Hugh Reginald and Mary Eliza Haweis, sister Hugolin Haweis and brother Stephen Haweis and assorted other relatives.

Fonds consists of correspondence, certificates, notes, photographs, printed materials, publications, diaries, minutes, financial materials, reports, the text of speeches, and manuscripts pertaining to Harry T. Logan and other members of the Logan Family. Fonds includes the diaries of John A. Logan, a pastor and Harry Logan's father. Fonds also includes Gwyneth Logan's work on the genealogy of the Logan family, as well as memorabilia from her university days and letters of condolence which she received on the death of Professor Logan.

The fonds consists of family papers, genealogical material, manuscripts and correspondence documenting the history of the Warren family in England. Some of the family members represented in the fonds are Reverend Dawson Warren, Falkland G.E. Warren, and Charlotte Jackson. The fonds also includes biographical information about Harry Warren and copies of his publications to 1978.

Collection consists of maps (in the form of photocopies, sketches, and photographs) used by Neal Harlow while writing his book The Maps of San Francisco Bay.

The fonds consists of correspondence, journals, legal documents, financial documents, printed drawings, watercolours, an order book, and personal and other documents created and/or accumulated by Edward Belcher and other members of the Belcher family. The majority of the Edward Belcher material is related to his naval career.

The fonds consists of photographs and textual records spanning the period 1710-1984, predominantly 1850-1940, related to business and personal lives of five generations of the McLennan family (immediate and extended), as well as to the work of Montreal lawyer, Frederick Griffin. McLennan family materials consist of photographs; incoming and outgoing correspondence; genealogical information and family histories; diaries and remembrances; newspaper clippings and ephemera; official documents; obituaries and tributes; drafts of writings, research notes, and sketches; and other documents.

The McLennan family materials includes a series reflecting William McLennan’s writing career, personal interests, and family life. William McLennan’s materials include full and partial drafts of published and unpublished works; research and reference materials; incoming and outgoing correspondence; legal and official documents; collected historical materials and documents; notes; sketches; journals; newspaper clippings and ephemera; photographs; and other materials.

The fonds also consists of a series reflecting Frederick Griffin’s occupation as a lawyer and his role as founder of the Canadian Loan Company. Frederick Griffin’s materials include incoming correspondence and draft responses; various financial and legal documents; legal research notes and drafts of legal documents; memoranda; meeting minutes; land and property documents and surveyors reports; newspaper clippings and ephemera; and other documents.

Finally, the fonds contains a series consisting of William Durie McLennan’s records, which were primarily created between 1914 and 1915 and pertain to his military service during the First World War. Record types in this series include the following: a handwritten, personal notebook; a typescript of this notebook; correspondence; service records from the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Forces; news clippings; black and white photographs; collected signatures from Canadian dignitaries; and materials from the 5th Battery Association of 1914.

This collection includes correspondence, financial records, legal documents, and newspapers which reflect the history of Sanbornton, New Hampshire, and New England as a whole in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries. The collection consists of documents related to the activities of local individuals, including the appointment of Justice of the Peace John Tallant; invoices and receipts for Hugh Tallant, Sarah Tallant, William Blake, Samuel Wells, W.W. Sargent, Samuel Sargent, Theodore Cooke, J.W. Blodget, Seth W. Fowle, Lyman Washburn, Fred E. Thorpe, William Wallace, and Edward Farnum, among others, mainly dealing with the sale and purchase of farming equipment, land, and household supplies.
The collection also includes correspondence between siblings Elisabeth, George, Laura, Stephen, and Thomas Wiggin and Susan Wiggin Avery and Joshua Avery; Dorothy, Hannah, James, Laura, Lucy, and Marinda Bean and Betsey Davis; Betsey Osgood and John Osgood; and between Laura Bean and Susan Wiggin.
Finally, the collection includes newspaper clippings from the following newspapers: l'Aurore, l'Aurore des Canadas, Canada Scotsman, The Canadian Ecclesiastical Gazette, Le Canadien, The Colonial Farmer, Colonist, Le Courier du Bas-Canada, Daily News, Des Trois-Rivieres, l'Echo du Pays, The Enquirer, The Evening Star, La Gazette de Quebec, Gazette des Trois-Rivieres, The Globe, Le Journal de Quebec, Montreal Herald, Montreal Transcript, Le Pays, The Pilot, Sinclair's Monthly Circular, Le Spectateur, and Waterloo Advertiser.

The fonds consists of one volume of correspondence. The volume includes 31 autographed letters to and from various correspondents, including Dr. James Lind. Bound with the letters are prints of the writers and brief biographical statements. The letters cover various topics ranging from scientific and medical topics to current events of the time and personal inquiries.

The fonds consists of records pertaining to the Pacific fishery industry. It includes Doyle's manuscript of Rise and Decline of the Pacific Salmon Fisheries, correspondence, thirty volumes of notebooks, legal documents, notes, reports, speeches, and clippings. The fonds also includes numerous photographs, statistics on B.C. companies and canneries, printed material, a scrapbook, maps and information about the B.C. Canners' Association, B.C. Packers' Association, the Select Standing Committee on Marine and Fisheries, and the Parliamentary Fisheries Committee.

The Tremaine Arkley Croquet Collection contains over 2,400 paintings, illustrations, engravings, advertisements, photographs and other ephemera depicting the game of croquet throughout the years. The images range from fine art to cartoons and everything in between, and show the rise in the game’s popularity in England and America in the 19th and 20th centuries. Many items in the collection show gender roles, as croquet was one of the first games that men and women played together.

The collection consists of records collected by Professor David Macaree in his research on early 18th Century English literature. It includes transcribed typed copies of the complete works of David Crawford (or Crawfurd) (ca. 1700); a copy of an article written by Macaree about Crawford (1961); and photocopies of early political pamphlets by Daniel Defoe (ca. 1700-1714).

The collection contains records related to Oscar Orr’s career in law, his professional and political affiliations, and records relating to his role as a prominent resident in the province of British Columbia. There are also historical records that Orr gathered as part of his collection. The collection consists of five series: British Columbia records; American records; Canadian provinces and politics records; Britain and Europe; and Books and miscellaneous records. The series American records contains documents and autographs of prominent US political, literary, and war figures. Records in this series date back to the 18th century and were part of the collection Orr gathered as part of his interest in history. The series Canadian provinces and politics records include early 19th century documents relating to the Canadian political landscape as well as Orr’s own correspondence with Canadian politicians and court officials. The series Britain and Europe contains records and autographs of British and European political, literary, and military figures, dating back to 1698. Books and miscellaneous records include books, newspapers, photographs and other records from Orr’s collection that relate to his interest in history.
