Artwork

The artwork in this collection was created by Allen Biller during her earlier years in England as well as during her time in Canada. Her earlier works, particularly those completed before immigrating to Canada, were often illustrative commercial works, intended for publication in books or periodicals, as well as for other commercial purposes such as Christmas cards and book plates. Her later works include more landscapes. The Artwork series is divided into 5 files: Original drawings, Published works, Significant unpublished works, Landscapes, and Other artwork.

Susan Lushington letters

Series consists of letters written by Arthur Hughes to Susan Lushington between 1898 and 1915, primarily between 1912 and 1915. Lushington's father was a patron of Hughes, and Susan herself purchased paintings from Hughes as an adult. Hughes also painted Susan with her sisters and mothers in 1884 ("The Home Quartette."). In his letters to Susan, Hughes writes about his paintings and illustrations and day-to-day life including visitors, correspondents and weather. The letters have been arranged by month and year into files by the archivist.

Miscellaneous Series

Series consists of pamphlets, articles, and invitations to social events received and collected by Jean Coulthard. In addition, the series contains materials relating to her various awards.

Operational records

The series contains records created during the fulfillment of Hoffmeister Electric’s contracting activities, including the installation of electric generators and the repair and rental of machinery to businesses in British Columbia. Records are arranged in seven sub-series on the basis of their documentary forms: Correspondence; Catalogues and reference books; Rental contracts, requisitions, and orders from clients; Order books; Employee notebooks; Electrical permits; and Ephemera.

The Correspondence sub-series comprises a selection of letters sent and received—primarily by Reinhart Hoffmeister--between 1898 and 1953. Letters sent are addressed to electrical machinery suppliers and clients. Letters received are often from clients regarding payments due. Files are in chronological order.

The Catalogues and reference books sub-series includes catalogues and instruction manuals from electrical machinery and automotive parts suppliers, including Jeffree and Johnson Limited, Nerlich & Co., Canadian Wood Pipe and Tanks Limited, Gray and Davis Inc., Fairbanks-Morse Automotive Equipment, and more. Records are arranged chronologically.

The Rental contracts, requisitions, and orders from clients sub-series aggregates a small sample of the aforementioned materials. Files are in rough chronological order.

The Order books sub-series features ledgers created by Hoffmeister Electric employees. Ledgers list clients serviced on particular dates alongside abbreviated descriptions of the services performed. 14 order books are present; volumes are arranged chronologically by start date.

The Employee notebooks sub-series includes notebooks created by Hoffmeister Electric employees as they serviced clients. Notebook entries list various dates, clients visited on those dates, and the total number of hours employees spent on projects. 13 notebooks are included in total, and all are arranged chronologically by start date.

The Electrical permits sub-series consists of electrical permits granted by the City of Vancouver to Hoffmeister Electric for work conducted on behalf of clients. Files are arranged chronologically by start date.

The Ephemera sub-series comprises a deed and maintenance payments for two orchard units in Mitchell County, Georgia that appear to have been sold and physically maintained by the Keystone Pecan Company. Reinhart Hoffmeister is listed as owner for these properties. The sub-series also features a technical drawing for an unidentified piece of machinery, complimentary Hoffmeister Electric calendars for clients, a poster from the Boundary Bay Sports Association, and a wooden printing block. Records are grouped in subject files.

Accounting records

The series contains records related to the financial administration of Hoffmeister Electric. Records are arranged in seven sub-series on the basis of their documentary forms: Tax records; Monthly time books for employees; Bank books of Reinhart Hoffmeister; Administrative bills; Insurance policies, leases, and deeds; Duplicate client invoices; and Ledgers.

The Tax records sub-series features federal, provincial, and municipal tax records from Reinhart Hoffmeister and Hoffmeister Electric. Files are arranged chronologically. Documentary forms include various corporate statements of assets and liabilities; federal income tax returns for employers; and Reinhart Hoffmeister’s personal property and income tax statements.

The Monthly time books for employees sub-series includes four notebooks used to record the total number of hours worked and wages earned each month by Hoffmeister Electric employees. Notebooks are arranged chronologically by start date.

The Bank books of Reinhart Hoffmeister series features 12 bank books for accounts at the Bank of Nova Scotia and Dominion bank. Bank books record account deposits and total balances. Volumes are arranged chronologically by start date.

The Administrative bills sub-series comprises a sample of bills paid by Hoffmeister Electric for machinery and maintenance of various premises in Vancouver. Bills were paid for clean towels, electricity, water, telephones, delivery services, machine parts, and more. Files are arranged chronologically.

The Insurance policies, leases, and deeds sub-series includes the aforementioned records, which were generated or procured by Reinhart Hoffmeister, his brothers, or Hoffmeister Electric for properties in Vancouver, British Columbia. Records in this sub-series are maintained in their original physical order.

The Duplicate client invoices sub-series contains a sample of original timesheets that Hoffmeister Electric charged to its clients, as well as 12 ledgers featuring duplicate copies of client invoices. Timesheets and invoices record client names, work completed on particular dates, and total amounts owed. Files are arranged chronologically.

The Ledgers sub-series aggregates ledgers used for a number of accounting activities by Hoffmeister Electric employees. General ledgers record client names, contact information, orders, and payment history over long periods of time. Other ledgers chart till passes, total machinery sales in set time periods, and petty cash flow. Ledgers have been grouped according to the specific activities they were associated with (e.g. till pass books are maintained separately from volumes recording total sales). Ledgers are then arranged chronologically within each sub-grouping.

Graphic materials

The series consists of posters, advertisements and illustrations ranging in date from 1898 to 1962. Many materials in this series originated as a result of creative works depicting life in the Yukon, and were used to market plays and movies about the Klondike Gold Rush. Other items originated from the tourism industry, and market the natural beauty of the Yukon and surrounding area, as well as the cultural and historical interest of the gold rush. Records in the series include black and white and coloured art prints and posters of varying sizes.

Miscellaneous Material series

Series consists of miscellaneous personal documents, including various certificates (1898-1899), letter of recommendation (1899-1901), four unidentified photographs, and various printed and published material.

Teaching Material series

Series consists of copies of examinations, lecture notes, course outlines, student lists for botany courses taught by Davidson.

Columbia River Lumber Company, Limited records.

Series consists of records of the Columbia River Lumber Company, Limited, dating from before and after its acquisition by the Canadian Western Lumber Company, Limited. Includes financial records, insurance records, personnel records, and timber and logging records. Series has been divided into sub-series based on these records categories, arranged alphabetically.

Silver-Lead Miners Association of British Columbia records

This series includes articles of association, bylaws, voter’s lists, minutes from general meetings, committee reports and resolutions and financial records. In addition, there is correspondence, minutes and other records relating to an eight hour shift dispute which occurred from 1899-1900. Of particular interest are the records of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency and the Thiel Detective Services Company. These relate to the Coeur d’Alenes riot and the men working at the time. Operative reports regarding union meetings are included.

British Columbia Canners' Association Records

Series consists of records pertaining to the British Columbia Canners' Association, and Doyle's involvement with the Association. Includes records of the Fraser River Canners' Association, the Rivers Inlet Canners and other groups.

Correspondence series

Series consists of incoming and copies of outgoing correspondence generated and received by Professor Harry Logan.

Interviews & Presentations

This series consists of interviews done by Kilian with Colin Gabelmann, an MLA from the Vancouver area. Issues discussed include women’s rights, social services and a day in the life of an MLA. The presentations are related to education, science fiction and technology.

Photographs series

Series consists of six photograph albums, containing 1464 b&w prints, documenting Samuel Laycock's WWI service in Europe and later travels; 1249 other b&w and colour prints, documenting Laycock and his family, friends, travels, and professional activities; and approximately 2800 35mm colour slides documenting his travels. Most of the photographs remain unsorted, although some have titles or other identification on the back.

Correspondence

The correspondence is separated into two groupings; incoming and outgoing
letters. Included is correspondence concerning Capilano College where Kilian
taught. There is also fan mail regarding many of Kilian’s books, political letters, and correspondence from friends and family. There is both handwritten and typed material.

Collected written material

This series contains drafts of essays not written byTom McEwen. Included in the series are: “The Mine Workers’ Union of Canada and the Great Pass Strike of 1932” by Allen Seager; “Basic Highlights of the Labor History – Lakehead and Canada”, by A.T. Hill; and a computer printout of an untitled work that describes events related to the confrontations between CPC Party members and Toronto police during the late 20s and 30s. The printout is dated September 4, 1976 and contains editing notes throughout. It is not known who wrote this piece. Also contained in this series are political and union essays: “Some Notes of the AHT Indians” by Morris Swadesh, “Strengthen the Struggle Against the Right Danger! (Statement of the Political Committee, Communist Party of Canada)”, and a few other writings which do not have titles.

Lastly, there is a collection of poems by Jake Bell which date from 1960 – 1965.

Materials are all typed, single page, on legal and letter-sized paper.

Letters Patent series

Series consists of 5 letters patent: 4 appointing Smith to public office, and one rescinding one of these appointments.

Legal Documents

Series consists of legal documents concerning the Inverness Cannery and the Nass River Canners, and clippings of legal notices pertaining to fisheries. Series also includes documents relating to a patent for wood turning machines.

Photographs

Series consists of photographs of various canneries, cannery owners and employees in British Columbia, and a photograph of the 1920 Canadian Fisheries Association convention.

Correspondence

Series consists of correspondence of Cumyow, including petitions and related correspondence sent on behalf of the Chinese Empire Reform Association of Vancouver to the British and United States governments concerning a political crisis in China, 1900 to 1902 . Series also includes Cumyow's correspondence with Vancouver City Archivist J.S. Matthews, 1952 to 1954, relating to the history of Chinese-Canadians in Vancouver, and the history of Vancouver in general.

Photographs and Artwork Series

Series consists of photographs of Keith, his family, friends of his father, and interesting locations. It also consists of artistic photographs taken by Keith and a painting of Gene Maillard. The series is split into Photographs and Portraits.

Sedgewick Memorial Collection series

The Sedgewick Memorial Collection was gathered by friends of Sedgewick following his death to honour his achievements.
Series consists of letters, verses, speeches and articles written by Sedgewick, photographs, a scrapbook of Sedgewick's newspaper columns, and printed materials. In addition, the series includes correspondence, sketches, and reports relating to the establishment of the Sedgewick Memorial fund and the Sedgewick Memorial reading room in the Main Library. Correspondence in files 4-23 was forwarded to the University Archives by Robert P. Aproberts in 1995.

Black/Howie family series

Series consists of genealogical information about the Black and Howie families and material relating to Black’s father, James Black, including a photograph album with images from the Boer War and various ships from World War I. In addition, there are documents relating to Black’s mother, Elizabeth Campbell and granddaughter Yarah Hooley, and a copy of a Black family history published by Myra Davey (née Black) in 2006, with a CD of digitized images.

Science Fiction Articles & Writings

This series includes four writings on science fiction in Canada, propaganda in
science fiction and how to write fantasy and science fiction. There are both original and draft copies.

Other Writing

Many of these writings came from folders the author entitled “writings from the 1960’s which is why many are dated with 196?. Some writings include handwritten notes and research. Included are several poems and essays from Kilian’s years as a student. The remaining are his early endeavors in writing, including some in the genre of science fiction, history and children’s literature.

Radio

This series consists of typed radio scripts. Some of Kilian’s books have been transformed into radio dramas such as Icequake and Wonder, Inc. There are typed and original handwritten scripts, many with notes attached or included. There is also related correspondence.

Printed Materials

Series consists of the printed materials and other publications of the Technocracy Movement, including article reprints, notes, digests, information briefs, pamphlets, booklets and posters.

Two copies of the Technocracy Study Course book, 1938 and 1945 editions are located in Box 1.

Fish Catching

Series consists of captain’s and fisher persons’ logbooks, journals, ledgers, boat and boating equipment records, and traps and trap equipment records. Inverness Cannery caught and canned five species of salmon: sockeye, pink, chum, coho, and spring, as well as halibut, tuna, and herring. They used Troll fishing boats, Gillnet boats and Seiners, as well as operated 5 freshwater salmon traps. Statistics relating to fish catches and fish packs, as well as river and weather conditions are available in the series. Workers in the cannery included Chinese, European, Indigenous, and Japanese men and women, and records relating to these individual groups are available in the series. Records in relation to World War One and World War Two are also in this series, including impoundment and sale of Japanese owned vessels, and applications for delayed military service for commercial fishermen.

Photographs series

The series consists of photographs, slides and negatives dating from 1900 to 1977. Most of the earlier photographs (1908-1924) are of MacKenzie and his fellow students at Pictou Academy and Dalhousie University. The photographs from 1924 to 1943 show MacKenzie in the various positions he held, including as the representative of the International Law Association, legal advisor to the International Labour Office, professor at the University of Toronto and president of the University of New Brunswick. Photographs from 1944 to 1962 are primarily of MacKenzie in his role as president of the University of British Columbia; of others associated with the University, of UBC buildings; many important visitors to the campus including Queen Elizabeth, Eleanor Roosevelt, and foreign dignitaries; and of MacKenzie's friends and family.

Subject files

Series consists of subject files compiled by Forbes pertaining to various priests, churches, and other religious subjects. Includes notes, newspaper and magazine clippings, papers, articles, pamphlets, programmes, correspondence, photographs, and other documents. Subject files are arranged alphabetically according to subject.

Educational Articles & Writings

This series includes published and unpublished articles and other writings on
educational issues, especially in British Columbia. Issues addressed include
technology in education, the internet and its affect on education, the Canadian educational system and its future, funding, mature students, and issues regarding teachers such as depression and over-working. Some have handwritten notes included or attached. This series also includes one interview with Crawford Kilian concerning his opinions on education in Canada. Mostly typed, however many of the writings do include handwritten notes and corrections.
