British Columbia historical postcard and photograph albums collection

The collection consists of ninety-one albums of postcards and photographs pertaining to views and scenes mainly in British Columbia, but also including Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and the Yukon as well as Europe. The views of British Columbia include views of the Rocky Mountains, Vancouver, Victoria, Mayne Island, and Buttle Lake (pre-1911) as well as those of logging (Capilano Timber Co., 1917-1920), mining (Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Co. and Consolidated Cariboo Hydraulic Mining Co.) railways (Canadian Pacific Railway, Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway, and Great Northern Railway) and shipping. In addition, there are postcards and photographs of the Hudson's Bay Company Kamchatka Venture, 1921, U.S. Civil War portraits and New Zealand shipping.

John Cooper Robinson collection

Fonds consists of over 4,600 photographic prints, negatives, glass lantern slides, and postcards, the majority of which were either taken or collected by Robinson. Many of the photographs relate to Robinson’s work as an Anglican missionary in Japan in the 1890’s through the 1920’s. These photographs document a unique time in the Japan’s history: the Meiji-Taisho period when the country was transitioning away from being a feudal society and beginning to open up to the West. This collection is one of the few comprehensive records of this time period. Subject matter of the photographs includes everyday life, work, and scenery in Japan, as well as the lives and works of missionaries.

Also included in the collection are photographs from Canada and the Robinson family’s travels around the world, as well as reproductions of missionary and religious texts or graphics.

While many of the photographs were taken by Robinson, others were taken by his children, professional photographers, or unidentified individuals.

The fonds also includes 10 maps of Japan used during Robinson’s missionary work, some with annotations of proposed Canadian jurisdictions in Japan.

Fonds reflects YWCA Metro Vancouver’s social and community services, programming, advocacy for women’s and gender issues, organizational administration, fundraising, publicity and communications management, and collaboration with affiliated service- and advocacy-based organizations.
Records consist of meeting minutes, correspondence, annual reports, occasional reports, financial records, programs, publications, media clippings, collected reference material, photographs, videocassettes, and other material arising from the organization carrying out its functional activities over the decades.

The 1981 accession is arranged into series according to material type and subject: 1. Minutes; 2. Financial Records; 3. Reports; 4. General Correspondence; 5. Buildings; 6. Annual Reports; 7. Printed Material; 8. Lists; 9. Clippings; 10. Photograph Albums; 11. Scrap Books; 12. Miscellaneous; and 13. Subject Files. This accession also includes a subgroup, National YWCA, arranged into six series: 1. Minutes; 2. Annual Reports; 3. Annual Meetings; 4. Reports; 5. Conventions; and 6. Directories. Arranged separately from these series is an addendum composed of photographs and scrapbooks.

The 2023 accrual is arranged into eight series: 1. Social and community services; 2. Advocacy; 3. Programming; 4. Administration; 5. Fundraising and donor relations; 6. Outreach and promotion 7. Affiliated organizations; and 8. Photographs.

YWCA Metro Vancouver

George North fonds

Consists of George North's research material on the fishing industry in British Columbia, and on the organization of the fishermen's labour unions. The research material includes letters inward and outward concerning his commission by the UFAWU ; his early manuscript, later typescripts, and edited typescripts for the book A Ripple, A Wave; original and photocopied records of Inverness Cannery ; extensive notes taken on the above records and local newspapers . Other material relates to his teacher training at the University of British Columbia. There is also a collection of published material .

Mildred Fahrni fonds

The fonds contains records related to Fahrni’s involvement with
various organizations including the Kerala Balagram School, and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and Fahrni’s activities as a lecture at various conferences and institutions. The majority of these records are arranged into subject, or research files, and represent Fahrni’s active involvement with a variety of human rights issues and local, National and social justice organizations.
The fonds includes correspondence, subject files, newspaper clippings, sound recordings, lecture notes, speeches, and conference and lecture notes. The fonds also includes photographs, slides, and albums documenting Fahrni’s family, life in British Columbia and trip to various locations overseas.
The fonds consists of 28 broadcasts and talks on the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation, relief camps and related political topics of the depression on CJOR, Vancouver. It also includes correspondence and subject files relating to her interests in peace and women's movements.

David Watmough fonds

The fonds consists of records generated and assembled by David Watmough related to his life and career as a novelist, short story writer, playwright, monodramatist and performer, poet, critic, broadcaster, journalist, and teacher. The fonds includes series of records arranged in twenty divisions, with the greatest portion related to writing and literary production: novels, short stories, plays and dramas, monodramas, poetry and songs, nonfiction books, diaries and journals, essays, collections and anthologies, recordings, reading scripts and performance files, radio and television broadcast scripts and project files, film scripts, lectures, addresses, and orations, journal articles, interviews, and reviews of books, exhibitions and theatre performances, as well as correspondence, finance and business files, subject files including published material about Watmough and copies of published material by him, and ephemera and miscellanea. The arrangement of records in files by the creator has been respected where such order exists. The fonds contains textual records, both manuscript and typewritten as well as computer generated, some printed, published material, an occasional sketch or drawing, several sound recordings of Watmough performing, a small number of electronic records, and a number of photoprints and slides kept with the original files where possible. Some monodramas have been retained in the original bindings provided for performance by the creator.

Fonds also includes some material accumulated by Kogawa's parents, the Rev. Gordon Goichi and Lois Kogawa. The fonds is arranged generally into series regarding Kogawa's written works; correspondence; documents related to conferences, speeches, organizations, and interviews; teaching materials; personal and legal records; family documents, other people's works; sound recordings; videocassette recordings; publications; subject files; and photographs.

Jack Shadbolt fonds

The fonds consists of Shadbolt's private journals, notebooks, lecture notes, sketch books from his work with the Art Students' League of New York, 1948-1949 as well as 6 sketchbooks from the 1960s, a collection of his loose drawings and studies, an extensive collection of photographs of Shadbolt's paintings, including colour transparencies, slides of a photographic work entitled "Year", family photographs, personal and professional incoming correspondence, his picture reference file of postcards and magazine clippings, exhibition catalogues and other printed material. Correspondents include John Macdonald, Wilfred Watson, Max Maynard, Jock Firestone, Molly Bobak, George Swinton, and Ron Thom.

Vancouver Status of Women fonds

The fonds consists of records related to Vancouver Status of Women’s (VSW’s) administrative activities, projects and lobbying endeavours, production, marketing, and distribution of Kinesis, their activities related to their advocacy function, and research and reference resources. Although the nature of VSW’s activities has changed over time, the organization has consistently maintained a commitment to addressing social issues related to women, including gender discrimination, pay equity, familial violence, racism, and many more topics. VSW has addressed these issues through a variety of avenues, including publications, press releases, lobbying of governments, a television program, workshops, and services for individuals in Vancouver. The fonds reflects these diverse organizational interests and activities in six series: 1. Administrative and executive; 2. Projects and lobbying activities; 3. Research and reference resources; 4. Advocacy; 5. Kinesis; and 6. Kinesis photobank and production room materials. Additionally, the fonds contains alphabetized subject files dating predominantly 1971-1978. The initial accession and first accrual are grouped into sets and described in the attached PDF finding aid.

The Administrative and executive series contains records pertaining to operational and executive activities including finance, committee and volunteer administration, employee management, correspondence, and strategic planning for the organization. Record types include grant applications, correspondence, invoices and receipts, meeting minutes, training materials, and correspondence.

The Projects and lobbying activities series features the records of VSW’s numerous and diverse projects and lobbying activities. Record types include VSW briefs, press releases, submissions to government, research reports, publications, correspondence, indexes for back issues of Kinesis, and volunteer applications.

The Research and reference resources series comprises materials from third parties that VSW collected to support its research projects and the needs of its visitors. The series also contains VSW briefs, press releases, and reports inter-filed with research materials. Record types include briefs and reports from other organizations, newspaper and magazine clippings, VSW correspondence, grey literature, copies of academic journals, and cassette tapes in honour of International Women’s Day.

The Advocacy series features records related to VSW lobbying and advocacy activities. These activities primarily included organizing and participating in committees and task forces set up by all levels of government, lobbying, and preparing briefs on legislative documents and materials. Record types include: correspondence with the Ministry of Justice and different coalitions such as BC Coalition of Women Centres and the 52% Coalition; meeting agendas and minutes; information sheets and brochures; event invitations; and other materials arising from VSW’s lobbying and advocacy work.

The Kinesis series includes records related to production, publication, marketing, and distribution of Kinesis, Vancouver Status of Women’ most significant publication in BC. Record types include design sketches and proofs, advertising, readers’ correspondences and surveys, volunteer training manuals, staff self-evaluations, and monthly activity reports.

The Kinesis photobank and production room materials series contains materials from the production room of Kinesis. These materials predominantly reflect the production cycle of the magazine and its records organization system for photographic and graphic materials that were used in or collected for future use in the magazine. Records include photographs, negatives, contact sheets, ephemera, and administrative records.

Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation fonds
