History

Emma Lee, born July 28, 1922, was the oldest of five children born to Herbert LEE and his second wife, Kit Chan. The family home was located at 1320 Bond Street in Victoria.

Emma had to quit school as a child in order to help support the family. She found work with a door-to-door Chinese grocer. She spoke better English than the grocer and was assigned to deal with customers and take the orders.

Also as a child, Emma contracted tuberculosis. Later, she discovered she could not have children. Some in the family believed her infertility was due to her bout with TB.

When Emma got married, her father Herbert spent a significant amount of money to host a large Chinatown wedding. (Later, for another one of his daughters, Herbert invested the money in his daughter’s university education.)

It is believed that Emma lived her entire life in Victoria.
