Biographical history
The National Association of Marine Engineers was founded in the 1880s. Its membership included the steamship and associated workers employed by companies such as British Yukon Navigation Company, Canadian National Railways, Canadian National Steamship Company and Shell Oil of British Columbia. The NAME was affiliated with the Canadian Brotherhood of Railway and Transport Workers prior to its merger with the Canadian Merchant Service Guild in 1966.

The fonds consists of minutes of Council No. 7 (1902-1921, 1938-1951), minutes of Council No. 4 (n.d.), financial records, agreements, membership and attendance records, towboat grievances, printed material, credit union material, all relating to the NAME. Also included are Ladies' Auxiliary records and L.H. Charlton's correspondence.

Finding aids
RBSC staff created an inventory for the fonds in 1985 (see attached PDF). In 2018 an accrual was made to the fonds, and a finding aid for this has been added as an addendum to the original finding aid, available as attached PDF.
