Materials were in the possession of Harry Kopyto, who donated them to RBSC on behalf of Geraldine Bowman in October 2019.
Scope and content
File consists of photographs taken at Tiananmen Square during the 1989 demonstrations. Although the photographs are undated, the donor stated that they "were taken at the time of the uprising and are largely but not completely about events that took place there both in the days leading up to it and concurrent with the uprising itself and just immediately before its repression." Images depict scenes from the square (large crowds, encampments, individuals), street scenes, views of the park and city, military vehicles in the streets, a plaque (in English) from the Drum Tower of Beijing, smoke in the distance, a burned out bus, and the Goddess of Democracy statue (including what appears to be its unveiling). Several photographs include captions:
PH-323 and PH-346: "Editor Cao Shing"
PH-347: "Intellectual - come from U.S. Lin Chiow Po"
PH-348 and PH-349: "Singer How De Tzien"
PH-350: "Professor Jo To"
PH-351: "Intellectual Lin Chia Po"
PH-360: "Professor Jo To"
