Administrative history

The Red Cedar Shingle and Handsplit Shake Bureau (currently called the Cedar, Shake and Shingle Bureau) is a non-profit organization which has its origins in Red Cedar Shingle Bureau, formed by the West Coast Lumber Manufacturers Association in 1915 in Seattle, Washington. In 1932, a British Columbia division was established, incorporated as a separate society under the British Columbia Society Act. In 1963 the Bureau merged with the Handsplit Shake Bureau and shortly afterwards in 1964 the British Columbia division was formally eliminated, but the Bureau continued to maintain a British Columbia office as an extraprovincial society. The Bureau’s aim is to promote the use of certified cedar roofing products and maintain standards amongst its member mills.

Custodial history

Transferred to UBC Library with donations of material by the Council of Forest Industries and by Mike Apsey in 1979 and 2010 respectively. The Bureau shared office space for some time with COFI and the records of the two organizations became intermixed.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of administrative and operational records of the Red Cedar Shingle and Handsplit Shake Bureau, maintained by the B.C. office (formerly the British Columbia Division). Records include correspondence, circulars, incorporation documents, clippings and other textual records, as well as a number of photographs. Fonds is arranged into three series: Administrative files, Certigrade activities bulletins and other circulars, and Advertisements and literature.

Arrangement

Archival material from the Red Cedar Shingle and Handsplit Shake Bureau was previously included in the finding aid for the Council of Forest Industries (COFI) fonds; however, because it was never a child company of or merged with COFI, it is now maintained as a separate fonds.
