Biographical history

Wilbert Lorne MacDonald obtained his B.A. from the University of Toronto (1908), M.A. from the University of Wisconsin (1910), and Ph.D. from Harvard University (1912). Before World War I, he taught at the Universities of Toronto and New Brunswick. In 1919, he became a professor of English at the University of British Columbia. MacDonald played an active role in the Musical Society, which made him an honorary president. He was considered a leading expert on the work of Alexander Pope, and he also wrote several English textbooks for the B.C. school system.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of manuscript material, including text and sketches, for an unpublished work by MacDonald entitled Trees of Canada. In addition, the fonds includes 222 sketches of non-Canadian trees as well as two sketchbooks containing pressed leaves.
