A.M. Stephen was born near Hanover, Ontario and he obtained part of his education at Walkerton Collegiate Institute. He travelled west and pursued occupations such as cattle ranching and logging before he went to Europe to serve in World War I. After the war, he moved to Vancouver where he taught and took an active part in the literary, social and political life in Vancouver. Stephen was known throughout Canada for his literary work which comprised two novels, four volumes of verse and two volumes of plays. He also edited two anthologies of Canadian Verse.
The fonds consists of records pertaining to Stephen's literary work and his social concerns, including the Canadian depression of the 1930s and the world rise of fascism. The fonds also includes two scrapbooks containing letters, clippings, photographs (including Norman Bethune) and related materials. Another scrapbook (1928-1963) was completed by Stephen's wife after his death.
Several files and items in this fonds were originally glued into scrapbooks and have since been physically removed, placed into file folders, and categorized into series. Other materials have remained glued in the original scrapbooks. In this finding aid, all such materials are described under the Scrapbook series; subseries within the Scrapbook series indicate the categories that each of those items were put into. General notes at the smallest level of description (either file or item) indicate which scrapbook page the file or item has come from. General notes also indicate whether the file or item remains glued in the scrapbook, or has been removed.
