Ian McDonald collection

The collection contains materials related to Ian McDonald's Master's thesis research on the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Local 213 “Class conflict and political factionalism: a history of Local 213 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, 1901-1961," and related to the activities of his father, Les McDonald, a trade union activist who belonged to Local 213 but was eventually suspended for leading the Lenkurt strike of 1966. Les McDonald was also a multi-sport athlete, and is credited with introducing the triathlon into the Olympics; some materials in the collection relate to Les McDonald's involvement in various sport and environmental organizations, as well as some of his personal papers. In addition to what he received from his father, Ian McDonald was also given papers by former IBEW Local 213 business manager Art O’Keeffe and Barry Sharbo, a board member of the Canadian Union of Electrical Workers (UE), as well as Alfie Huston, the former President of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 213 from 1985-1988, which are included within the collection.

The collection is largely comprised of newspaper and photocopied journal articles, correspondence between members of IBEW Local 213, legal documentation, newsletters and other printed ephemera related to IBEW Local 213.

The collection also contains sound recordings of interviews with numerous figures in IBEW Local 213 created by Ian McDonald during his thesis research. McDonald's thesis, submitted for the completion of a Master of Arts in History at Simon Fraser University, can be found in the Summit database: http://summit.sfu.ca/item/6361.

The collection also contains background materials accumulated by McDonald while writing his book “The Red Baron of IBEW 213,” including digital sound recordings of interviews, research articles, notebooks, consent forms, a draft royalty agreement, a draft chapter and a press marketing questionnaire.

[News clippings 1999 strike]

File contains photocopies of news clippings relating to the 1999 CUPE strike, dated January 7, 2000 to September 7, 1999. Topics discussed include picketing and strikes, negotiations, essential services, the UBC Alma Mater Society (AMS) supporting CUPE, contracts, and a proposed union for sessional instructors at UBC.

AUCE History

File contains materials relating to the formation of the Association of University and College Employees, including two issues of the AUCE Local 1 newsletter Across Campus, photocopies of articles, a report on the history of CUPE 2950 (AUCE successor), and an account of signing the first AUCE collective agreement, dated 1972 to 1999.

Across Campus Volume 2, Issue 5, April 1, 1974, urges members to vote for AUCE Local 1 (UBC) to represent library and clerical staff at UBC, and includes information on division meetings and stewards.

Across Campus Volume 2, Issue 8, June 4, 1974, describes a mass contract study session undertaken by 831 AUCE members, negotiations with UBC, a meeting notice, mediation strategies, powers of the executive, the grievance committee, provincial union representatives, notice of bylaw amendment, wage demands, AUCE members working at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), statement of income and expenses for September 24, 1973 to May 15, 1974, UBC wage proposals, the treasurer's report including proposed expenditures for furniture and office equipment, and office staffing and duties.

Other topics discussed include a comparision of employee rights and benefits from the 1970s to the 1990s, discussions about other unions (OTEU, CUPE), wages, organizing, membership, voting, contracts, negotiation, benefits, and the history of unions in Canada.

[Scrapbook of 1992 strike]

File contains materials relating to the 1992 CUPE strike, including photocopies of articles and photographs (originals moved, see below) and news clippings dated February 20, 1992 to March 26, 1992. Topics discussed include background information on the strike, working conditions and wages, pay equity, negotiation, effects of the strike, scabs and strikebreakers, UBC student, administration, and faculty responses to the strike, a B.C. Supreme Court injunction limiting picket locations, the student sit-in at the president's office and related statement, and the end of the strike. File also contains an envelope of additional news clippings.

[News clippings 1992 strike]

File contains three envelopes of newspaper clippings relating to the 1992 CUPE strike, dated December 9, 1992 to August 13, 1992. Topics discussed include equity, women in the workplace, finances, strikes, crossing picket lines, court injunctions, other unions such as the HEU, student actions supporting or opposing the CUPE strike, and university policy for students during the strike. File also contains several complete issues of newspapers such as the Ubyssey and the first issue of the UBC Student dated March 17, 1992.

File contains meeting minutes of the following Health and Safety Committees: General Services and Administration Building, dated April 11, 1985 to April 24, 1986; Instructional Resources Centre, dated January 30, 1985 to January 29, 1986; Library Processing Centre, dated March 15, 1985 to May 13, 1986; and Department of Theatre, dated January 13, 1985 to March 13, 1986. [Solidarity coalition records]

Topics discussed include strikes and negotiation, responses and opposition to Bill 2-3, Bill 11, Bill 26, and other government policies and legislation, correspondence, budget cuts, a copy of the AUCE Local 1 Solidarity Times, office equipment and costs, reports and summaries on potential legislative changes such as the Labour Code Amendment Act (Bill 28) and others, political protests, leaflets entitled "The Real Kerkhoff Story," and "B.C. Working conditions

File contains material relating to working conditions at UBC. Records include "Second draft of amendments to Industrial Health & Safety Regulations (First Aid Section)" from the Worker's Compensation Board of British Columbia (dated September 25, 1978), documents produced by Local 1's Working Conditions Committee, correspondence regarding working conditions, an inspection report, a report regarding the detrimental effects of fluorescent lighting, and a newspaper clipping regarding stretching exercises for office workers.

File also contains a pamphlet from the UBC Alumni Association's Wesbrook Society (possibly from 1982), and copies of Local 1's grievance form.

[Local 5 Job action records, correspondence, and other materials]

File contains material from Local 5 (College of New Caledonia) dated June 9, 1976 to October 7, 1981. Records include news bulletins, executive committee list, incoming correspondence, press clippings and report. Topics include constitution violations, discliplinary action, relations with non-teaching staff, contract negotiations, and strike action.

Seventh Annual Provincial Convention (2 of 2)

File contains Local reports and other records dated June 18, 1980. Records include Local monthly reports from June 1979 to June 1980, Local annual reports to the 7th annual convention, a report from the British Columbia Students' Federation, reports from SORWUC, and reports from the Labour Advocacy and Research Association (LARA).
