Biographical history
Renate Shearer attended Ohio State University where she received her B.Sc. in Social Administration in 1953. Shearer then worked as a practicing social worker. In 1970 she became a community worker with the YMCA and, in 1972 became its Director of Branch and Area Development. From 1975 to 1981 Shearer served as Social Planner for the City of Vancouver. In 1981/82, she taught classes at the University of British Columbia in the School of Social Work. Throughout her career, Shearer was very active in social service-related issues, the promotion of human rights, and the abolition of racism. In 1983 she became very much involved in the Solidarity Coalition.

Scope and content
The fonds consists of correspondence, reports, notes, speeches, minutes, press releases, clippings and printed material arising from Shearer's career as social activist, planner, and teacher (1975-1988). Records include much material relating to the Solidarity Coalition, human rights, and the Multicultural Societies and Service Agencies of British Columbia.
