Structure

Film contains promotional content showing various homes in North America. It details the uses of Douglas fir, Western hemlock, and Western red cedar as building materials, furniture materials, and showcases the tools, technologies, and methods for building interior and exteriors of homes.

Hemlock: The Natural Choice

This film promotes Hemlock as a building material. It begins with an animation showing how trees grow in the forest setting, and how trees are cut based on clear zones and factory zones, determined by the presence of knots. The film shows the cutting of the hemlock and the drying of the wood, as well as cutting clear lengths for interior paneling. It continues with cutting of clear lengths for interior paneling, the hemlock used in Coquitlam Centre, ladder manufacturing, creation of exterior siding and finger joints, garage doors, sash and window frames, wood frame patio doors, raised door panels, column and spindle construction, and how well hemlock undergoes the process of staining and moulding.

Red Cedar et douceur de vie

This promotional film describes historic and modern uses of Western Red Cedar, including uses by First Nations, early settlers, and architectural design in the 1970s. It follows the process of harvesting Western Red Cedar, from the cutting of timber to the lumber mill where shingle and shake are shown in production. Music is performed by The Collectors, and the film is edited by Ingrid Rossen.

And Yet the Forest Stands

This promotional film provides a narrative on the benefits of clearcutting, the uses of British Columbian softwoods, the work of falling and bucking timber, transporting timber on logging roads and waterways with the use of logging trucks, sidewinders, and tug boats, mill processes including production of newsprint and plywood, the process of kiln drying, wildfire management, and tree breeding. Forestry practices are shown in coastal British Columbia as well as in the interior. Species of trees discussed include Spruce Pine Fir, Lodgepole Pine, and Western Red Cedar. The importance of the preservation of waterways, salmon, and a philosophy of multiple use of the forest are also shown.
