Pacific Islands focus subseries

Subseries contains original research/data, correspondence and annotated reference materials related to groups in the South Pacific, including the Solomon Islands, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea. It also includes some miscellaneous essays on other groups outside the area.

Military focus subseries

Subseries contains reports and material focused on the RAF (Royal Air Force) and a report Belshaw produced on productivity in the military.

British Columbia focus subseries

Subseries contains original research/data, correspondence and annotated reference materials related to various projects focused in BC. Topics include representation of First Nations in BC and the National Film Board, recreation facilities on the North Shore, restaurants in Greater Vancouver, and transit.

Family Correspondence sub-series

Sub-series consists of correspondence between Jean Coulthard and family members (husband Donald Adams and daughter Jane Adams), and early correspondence addressed to Jean Coulthard's parents, Walter and Jean Robinson. Sub-series arranged chronologically.

Administrative subseries

Subseries consists of correspondence, CVs, and reports relating to the administration of the Institute, its programs and its personnel.

Jane C. Fredeman and Tony Blicq subseries

As the Senior, then Managing, Editor of UBC Press from 1973-1990, Jane C. Fredeman was primarily responsible for the solicitation and editing of manuscripts; while A.N (Tony) Blicq, as the first Executive Director of the UBC Press, was responsible for both the establishment of the departmental infrastructure, and the practical realization of the mandate of the Press itself.
Correspondence sub-series consists of drafts of letters and memorandum regarding readers reports, grant proposals, interdepartmental communication, correspondence with authors, warehouse operations, letters of acknowledgement, changes to administrative procedure and restructured responsibility, requests for donations, quotation permission, and manuscript rejections.

CBC Interviews sub-series

Subseries consists of unedited interview recordings of Harry and Frances Adaskin, done for the 1979 CBC television programme "To Play Like An Angel," about their lives and careers. The tapes cover most of the same topics as the manuscripts in the "Autobiographies" series and related subjects not covered in Adaskin's books. Tapes 18 and 19 contain interviews with their stepson Gordon Adaskin. Tape 20 includes a recording of Frances Adaskin playing the piano. These recordings were used as "voice-overs" during certain scenes in the show. Recordings on tapes 26 and 27 are repeated or recorded twice. Tapes 28-30 are musical performances by Frances Adaskin and others, recorded for use as musical interludes. Recordings are made on reel-to-reel audio tapes.

Western Accord subseries

Subseries consists of records relating to the signing of the Western Accord, also referred to as the Agreement of Natural Gas Pricing. The sub-series includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, and a copy of the Agreement on Natural Gas Markets and Prices signed by Prime Minister Mulroney. The sub-series also includes research materials on Carney's participation in the Western Accord, including memoranda, articles and other materials. Four videos on the signing of the Agreement - predominantly nightly television news clippings.

Foreign Missions and State Visits subseries

Subseries includes personal notes, briefing notes, itineraries and newspapers from official missions to China by Minister Carney. In addition, the subseries consist of materials from Expo 85, Tsukuba, Japan. The subseries also contains programs and menus from official state functions Carney attended as Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources.

South Pacific Trade Forum subseries

Subseries consists of External Affairs briefing books, correspondence, news releases, travel claims, and tourist brochures from Vanuatu. The materials reflect Carney's participation in the South Pacific trade talks. Although Carney had been appointed to the senate and no longer held the portfolio of Minister of International Trade, at the request of Joe Clark Carney, she attended the talks as a member of the Canadian negotiation team. The photographs in the subseries include shots of Carney in Vanuatu and various views of the island.

Chronologies subseries

The subseries consists of various records about the chronologies created for and included in Literature In English, including clippings and notes, revisions and an appendix.

Manuscripts subseries

Subseries consists of drafts, and in some cases, the published version of over 60 articles and book chapters written by Verner dealing with adult education. Subseries includes a few drafts of speeches that Verner delivered that were subsequently published. Subseries also consists of a photocopy of a monograph on Verner by Professor Gary Dickinson of the Centre for Continuing Education, UBC, entitled, "Contributions to a Discipline of Adult Education: A Review and Analysis of the Publications of Coolie Verner." Subseries is arranged in chronological order.

Speeches subseries

Subseries consists of lectures and speeches given by Verner. The lectures and speeches are either handwritten or typed. Some speeches will also be found in the "Conferences, conventions, and workshops" subseries described in this file list.

Miscellaneous subseries

Subseries consists of miscellaneous materials related to adult education research. Materials include 4 reel to reel tapes of the NBC radio show The People Act, which first aired in December 1950. The fifth tape contains a lecture by Verner. There are also 17 microfilm copies of books or articles on adult education and rural communities.

Maps subseries

Subseries consists of maps, charts, and plans collected by Verner, the majority of which appeared in atlases and books. Subseries also includes a few manuscript maps. The maps, charts, and plans are mainly of North America, in particular the western and northern parts, and of eastern Russia and China. There are many maps of Northern Canada, the North Pole, Bering Strait, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, California, and the Pacific Ocean. A number of maps feature the tracks of the ships of explorers such as Cook, Vancouver, La Perouse, Muller, Cluny, De Fonte, Dixon and Meares, Mackenzie and Hearne.
The maps are engraved and lithographed. Mapmakers from Europe and North America include Aaron and John Arrowsmith, Didier Robert de Vaugondy, Abraham Ortelius, Guiljelmo Blaeu, Gerard Mercator, Jodocus Hondius, Sebastian Munster, Reynold [Renier] Elstracke, Guillaume de L'Isle, Renier and Joshua Ottens, Herman Moll, Isaac Brouckner, Isak Tirion, Thomas Jeffreys, Philippe Buache, Pierre Francois Tardieu, L. Women's Initiatives for Support and Education (WISE) project

The sub-series contains records related to the Women’s Initiatives for Support and Education (WISE) project. The project was launched to support the target population of young women living with HIV/AIDS with a specific focus on indigenous women, young women who used intravenous drugs, or women involved in sex-work. Objectives included increasing access to care and treatment, creating a peer-driven supportive environment, decreasing isolation and vulnerability to secondary infections, promote involvement of women in the design and implementation of the project, promote awareness to community resources, and to promote testing. PWN partnered with YouthCo AIDS society to implement the project, and the project was funded by the AIDS Community Action Program (ACAP).

Record types include correspondence, project proposals, work plans, related research, funding forms, contracts, and amendments, budgets and cash flows, progress reports, and volunteer information.

Women and AIDS Virtual Education (WAVE) project

Scope and content: The sub-series contains records related to the Women and AIDS Virtual Education (WAVE) project. The project was launched to support HIV + women in British Columbia to share dialogue about being HIV positive, to provide access to medical and treatment information, peer support, counselling, resources, education, ‘experts’, such as doctors, lawyers, nutritionists and treatment experts, and to break-down isolation and stigma faced by HIV + women, particularly women in rural areas. WAVE was modelled as a ‘virtual drop-in clinic’ website, and contained question and answer online modules, bulletin boards for HIV + women and community members, and resources such as newsletters, brochures, and links to other important websites.

Record types in the sub-series include project reports, correspondence, financial records, strategy documents, web design and marketing proposals, press releases, and materials related to website such as domain name purchase and IBM customer agreement.

Subject Files subseries

Subseries consists of funds, foundations, and the President's Circle records and includes memos, notes, spreadsheets, faxes, proposals, and correspondence. Files are arranged alphabetically.

Videotapes subseries

The subseries consists of videotaped exhibits compiled for the APEC PCC and other amateur and news videos of actions at UBC and Downtown Vancouver concerning APEC. The videos include helicopter and night vision footage of downtown and UBC, news coverage of APEC and the protests at UBC, and RCMP video footage of the event at UBC.

APEC RCMP PCC Exhibits subseries

The subseries consists of documents compiled by various government agencies and civilian witnesses for exhibit during the RCMP Public Complaints Commission. The exhibits consist of correspondence, witness statements, police statements, photographs and videotapes and other materials considered pertinent for inclusion. The exhibits are arranged in alpha-numeric order where applicable and then maintained by the donor.

Personal collection subseries

Provenance information, detailed inventories, conservation histories, sales and acquisition records, donation documentation and correspondence regarding exhibition and research of Sawyer's personal collection.

Americas subseries

Photographic prints, slides, maps, and documentation depicting objects and sites related to ancient Andean societies. Includes some materials regarding North America, mainly focused on cultures of the Northwest Coast.

NLII subseries

This subseries relates to the project “Case Studies in the Benefits and Costs of Mediated Instruction and Distributed Learning” by Frank Jewett and is partially overseen by Distance Education and Technology. It includes correspondence, meeting agenda, and report and review drafts.

Faculty subseries

Subseries consists of memorandum, minutes, correspondence, reports, notes, and documentation generated by faculty of the Division of Industrial Education, mainly Chairman and Assistant Chairman, including R.J. LeDuc, W.R.F. Seal, and W.J.P. Logan. The majority of the files documents their administrative roles. Some files documenting their teaching activities are also included. The subseries has been re-organized in alphabetical order by the faculty’s last name.

Meetings subseries

Subseries consists of agendas, minutes, notes, and documentation of the Division of Industrial Education’s staff and faculty meetings. The files were originally housed in large binders. The subseries has been re-organized in chronological order.

Centre for Human Settlements subseries

Subseries consists of drafts, essays, notes, clippings, correspondence, memos, invitations, minutes, memorandum, newspapers, agendas, pamphlets, note cards, reports, plans, and maps, relating to H. Peter Oberlander’s professional contribution to the Centre for Human Settlements at UBC.

Jerusalem Committee subseries

Subseries consists of drafts, essays, notes, clippings, correspondence, memos, invitations, minutes, memorandum, newspapers, agendas, pamphlets, note cards, reports, plans, and maps, relating to H. Peter Oberlander’s professional contribution to the Jerusalem Committee.

Harry Seidler subseries

Subseries consists of drafts, essays, notes, clippings, correspondence, memos, invitations, minutes, memorandum, newspapers, agendas, pamphlets, note cards, reports, plans, and maps and a political cartoon relating to H. Peter Oberlander’s professional work with Harry Seidler.

Banff, Alberta Planning and Development subseries

Subseries consists of drafts, essays, notes, clippings, correspondence, memos, invitations, minutes, memorandum, newspapers, agendas, pamphlets, note cards, reports, plans, and maps, relating to H. Peter Oberlander’s professional work with Banff, Alberta Planning and Development.

The Clean Body: A Modern History subseries

Subseries consists of research and materials relating to Ward's book The Clean Body: A Modern History published by McGill-Queen's University Press in November 2019. This book represents a synthesis of scholarship on the history and development of personal hygiene in Canada, Europe, and the U.S. Types of records in the sub-series include journal article photocopies, research notes, correspondence, publicity materials, manuscript copies, and chapter drafts of the book. Photocopied documents retained by the archivist include some sort of annotations by Ward. This project included some digital-born materials saved by Ward on a USB removable memory drive. Records saved as files on the drive included various journal articles or chapters in addition to a master bibliography for the project created in the software EndNote. Other *file formats included are Microsoft Word Documents (.docx and .doc), Microsoft Excel Documents (.xlsx and .xls) and PDFs.

Some of the records in this subseries are in Italian, French, and German.
