Governance.

Series contains records relating to the reorganization and governance of the Council of Forest Industries. Material consists of organization’s mission and mandate, strategic plan, goals and activities, organizational plans, descriptions about COFI positions and departments, questions about the future direction of the organization, staff development seminar documents, documents concerning issues faced by COFI during the 1990s, and the documents regarding the reorganization of the organization. Materials also include COFI’s reorganization of its Shingle and Shake division.

Fonds represents the function and activities performed by the Council of Forest Industries. The fonds consists of committee meeting minutes, reports, statistics, newsletters, news releases, advertisements produced by the organization, agreements, governance records, briefs, bulletins, correspondence and memoranda, financial records, conference material, legal documents, mills lists, records relating to the International Trade Commission, films and audio material created to train and promote forestry in British Columbia and in Canada, and photographs depicting different mining areas and members of the organization.
The Council of Forest Industries is divided into five sous-fonds: British Columbia Loggers Association sous-fonds, British Columbia Lumber Manufacturers Association sous-fonds, Canadian Pulp and Paper Association (B.C. Division) sous-fonds, British Columbia Plywood Manufacturers Association sous-fonds, and the Consolidated Red Cedar and Shingle Association of British Columbia sous-fonds. The fonds itself is divided into twenty series: circulars, memoranda and correspondence, advertisements, reports, statistics, lists, legal documents, agreements, briefs, bulletins, committees, International Trade Commission, financial records, governance, minutes, newsletters, news releases and audio-visual material.

Audio-visual materials.

Series contains audio-visual material relating to the Council of Forest Industries. Material consists of audio reels, video cassettes, film reels, and cassette tapes that document different types of trees, health and safety procedures during forestry operations, and promotional material regarding forestry and lumber.

Legal documents.

Series contains records relating to legal proceedings and questions relating to the Council of Forest Industries. Material consists of judgements from the Supreme Court of British Columbia and a detailed description of reasons for the judgements and mini trail reports concerning trials of lumber related companies and an inquiry report regarding scaling at Shoal Island Log sort.

Minutes.

Series consists of meeting minutes of the Council of Forest Industries committees. Material consists of ledger books with meeting minutes pasted inside, type and handwritten minutes.
Minutes are divided into the follow sub-series: Ad Hoc Meeting on Packaging and Labelling Act, Annual General Meeting minutes, Board of Director Meeting minutes, Canadian Forest Industries Council Board of Directors minutes, Canadian Forest Industries Council minutes, Canadian Wood Council, Lumber Promotion Committee minutes, Management Meeting minutes, Nomination Committee, Overseas Market Program Committee, Shingle and Shake Liaison Committee, Shingle/Shake Promotions Committee Meeting minutes, and Working Group of Ad Hoc Committee on U.S. Market Meetings minutes.

Board of Director meetings.

Sub-series contains meeting minutes of the Council of Forest Industries’ Board of Directors. Material consists of meeting minutes that detail the meeting agenda, a summary of proceedings, a list of attendees, financial reports, president reports, economic reports, management reports, and appointment of new members and members to committees.

Agreements.

Series consists of the Softwood Lumber Agreement and a signed final copy of the Cooperative Overseas Market Development Project and Western Canada Agreement and a copy of the British Columbia Jobs and Timber Accord.

Newsletters.

Series contains newsletters relating to the Council of Forest Industries Shingle and Shake Division. Material consists of newsletters that are concerned with education and training information, committee updates and reports, residential housing construction figures, notes on publicity, and average prices of different wood related constructions in the Vancouver and Victoria area.

Annual General Meeting.

Sub-series contains the Council of Forest Industries’ Annual General Meeting minutes. Material consists of minutes that provided specific details about the meetings’ proceedings, a list of attendees, the agenda of the meeting, and transcriptions of speeches from the AGM luncheons, and reports from different committees.

Correspondence and memorandum.

Series contains memoranda and correspondence relating to the Council of Forest Industries. Material consists of correspondence with the Honourable Jean-Luc Pepin, correspondence concerning the cost of promoting forestry overseas, memos concerning the United States legislative process, correspondence of the Cooperative Overseas Promotion, correspondence and memoranda regarding the Future History Project and correspondence regarding Canadian lumber dispute, correspondence regarding Mike Aspey’s participation at Meech Lake, correspondence and memos with the Shingle and Handsplit Shake Bureau, correspondence regarding the proper packaging and labelling of shingle and shakes, correspondence and examples of shingle company shipping labels, memos and correspondence with Arnold Porter and COFI regarding the Shingle and Shakes inquiry, correspondence concerning overseas market development and missions with foreign countries, and N.R. Dustings personal correspondences.
Photographs are of different structures located in areas of Pago Pago including The Tusitala Hotel in Western Samoa, a new hotel under construction in Pago Pago, the Painnaber Hotel, a church, and the Convention Centre.
Series also holds 20 35 mm slides on the Destination of BC Forest Products.
