Fonds reflects Mike Apsey’s career and his involvement with organizations relating to forestry. The records include briefing notes, comments, speeches, remarks, presentations, made at conferences and different forestry gatherings, meeting minutes, transparencies and slides used for presentations, photographs of Apsey with dignitaries from Canada and the United States, reports, articles, and publications by Apsey about forestry.
This fonds is divided into ten series: Briefs; Books and coursework; Conferences, committees, meetings, seminars, and conventions; Correspondence and memorandum; Hearing and legislation; Minutes; Reports, publications and articles; Photographs; Softwood Lumber Dispute; and Speeches, statements, remarks, and comments.

Reports, articles, and publications

Series contains reports, articles, and publications by Mike Apsey or relating to forestry issues in British Columbia, in Canada, and, to a lesser extent, the world. Material consists of journal articles, cost analysis reports and comparisons on stumpage costs, histories of the forest industry in Canada and the United States of America, surveys on different aspects of forestry including timber and logging, and studies.

Softwood lumber dispute.

Series contains records relating to the softwood lumber disputes (sometimes referred to as the “Lumber Wars”) between Canada and the United States. Materials consists of executive summaries, transcripts of the proceedings, comments concerning importing softwood lumber into Canada, summary of statements, countervailing duty investigation procedures, the Commissions final determination, post-hearing submissions, and questionnaires. Also included is a painting by Bob McNamara, an Emily Carr University student, given to Apsey as his Lumbermen of the Year gift.

Speeches, statements, remarks, and comments.

Series contains speeches, remarks, comments, and statements made throughout Mike Apsey’s professional career and retirement. Material consists of speeches made to various forestry related organizations and associations and include the Whistler Speech series, and comments and remarks regarding different forestry related issues including the Softwood Lumber Disputes. The series is arranged chronologically.

Hearing and legislation.

Series contains hearings, guidelines, and legislations related to forest industry issues. Material consists of forestry related legislation, hearing transcripts on US-Canada trade negotiations, on natural resource subsidies, regulations and guidelines on the US-Canadian Free Trade Agreement, Freedom of Information Act, Canada Treaty series, the Baucus Bill, and the Omnibus Trade Act, and others.

Correspondence and memorandum.

Series contains correspondence, memorandum, and letters relating to the Mike Apsey’s involvement in the forest industry. Materials consists of correspondence between lawyers, COFI members, the Prime Minister, Provincial Premiers, U.S. senators, and the Department of Commerce, and Mike Apsey in his capacity as COFI president.

Conferences, committees, meetings, seminars, and conventions

Series contains conference, committee, meetings, seminar, and convention records relating to the Mike Aspey’s activities. The material consists of agendas, conference publications, conference proceedings, and submitted materials such as reports and speeches.


Series consists of minutes from COFI meetings, minutes of the Thirty-Ninth Meeting of the Western States Legislative Forestry Task Force, and minutes of legal proceedings.


Series contains briefs, surveys, and questionnaires relating to the Mike Aspey’s career in the forest industry. Material consists of news releases, communiqués, newspaper clippings, briefs, surveys and questionnaires dealing with B.C. forestry and Canadian forestry, the four Softwood Lumber disputes from 1982, 1986, 1991, and 2001, countervailing duty action briefs, and briefing notes concerning Canadian-U.S. wood products trade.

Writing and coursework.

Series contains records relating to the writing of Aspey’s book What’s All This Got to do with the Price of 2x4’s? The material consists of the fifth draft of the book and photocopies of photographs that would become part of the book. The photographs include originals and several negatives. Also included are course notes from the course Forest Economics and Finance at the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Forestry Department and a course paper for another forestry class at UBC.
