Esther Paulson

Subfonds consists of records that date from 1920 to 2004. These include textual material and photographs, the majority of which were created and accumulated by Esther Paulson. Material pertains to Esther’s education and nursing career, with a number of articles, both by her and others, relating to her interest in tuberculosis nursing. Others document her involvement with various associations and organizations, including the Registered Nurses' Association of British Columbia, the Canadian Nurses' Association, the International Council of Nurses, and the Canadian Tuberculosis Association. The photographs document her life in the East Kootenays and the Kamloops area.

British Columbia Operating Room Nursing Group

The subfonds includes records dating from 1966 to the present. These are generated by the operation of the executive, the residing presiding officer, and the biennial meetings. The biennial meetings material includes programs and brochures for most years; minutes, correspondence, committee reports and financial records are also included. Records of meetings and related documents for the Vancouver region are included, but the other provincial regions are represented only by reports submitted to the executive. Membership lists for many years are included.

Numerous reports from BCORNG committees and other sources are included. These are mainly concerned with competency levels of OR nurses and operating room standards.

Over five hundred photographs document the Biennial Institute Conferences held every two years beginning in 1968, all of which are individually described. The last conference thus documented was held in Victoria in 1996. Artifacts include the BCORNG flag, and conference and membership pins.

Vera McIver

Subfonds consists of material written and published by Vera McIver. Most of this dates from 1967 to the 1980s. Publications are arranged alphabetically, and include such titles as “Environment in Extended Care” and “Humanizing the Work Space”. Extensive correspondence dates from 1971 to 1975. Many materials, including a videocassette, relate to the Priory method which she developed.

May Bernadet Ratsoy

Subfonds consists of textual records, photographs and plaques dating from 1955 to 2009 related to Ratsoy's varied nursing activities. Incoming and outgoing correspondence document her many professional involvements. She published numerous articles, particularly in the RNABC News, while she was President of this association, and made many presentations.

A folder of newspaper clippings relate to Ratsoy's presidency of the B.C. Nursing Association and her appointment to the position of Executive Director of the Alberta Association of Registered Nurses. Another folder describes her work at BCIT. Her numerous awards are also documented. The photographs, which further describe her activities, audiotape interviews related to her life and career are also in the subfonds.

Ruth McIllrath

Subfonds includes records related to McIlraith’s personal life and career. Many document her experiences as a nursing sister in World War II; much of her later life as a nurse and later Director of Shaughnessy Hospital was also dedicated to work with veterans. A number of articles discuss her activities and contributions, especially during WW II. Photographs, mostly obtained from official sources, provide a visual record of life as a hospital nurse aboard the Lady Nelson.

Ruth Saunders

Subfonds consists of one folder of papers related to Ruth Saunders’ life and career. These include copies of pages in English from the History of the Wonju Union Christian Hospital, the original of which was sent to the United Church of Canada Archives in Toronto. The original of a photocopied framed photograph of the CWAC Military Band No. 3 has been returned to the family. A copy of a presentation by Dr. Young Suk Park and Glennis Zilm titled “Preserving a Tiger’s Treasures: Artifacts as a Research Tool” on Ruth Saunders’ artifacts, dated Jun 10, 2011, is included.

Subfonds consists of records related to Sara Staples life and career. Of special note is a scrapbook, compiled following her retirement, and providing a view of many of the people who were central to the development of nursing and St Paul’s Hospital in the latter part of the last century.

Registered Nurses Association of British Columbia

Subfonds consists of 39 black and white photographs of RNABC and CRNBC presidents and 5 of executive directors. Dimensions of photographs are 12 cm x 17 cm. Biographical information accompanies presidents up to Elaine Baxter (1993-1995). The photographs are arranged chronologically. Brief one-page biographical notes of their subjects accompany all photographs from Scharley Bryce Brown (1912-1917) to Elaine Baxter (1993-1995).

These photographs were originally hung in the Board Room 3 in the College’s former offices. Those of the Presidents have been left within their frames, which are generally more permanent. Those of the Executive Directors have been removed.

Lois Blais

Subfonds consists of records related to Blais’ education, career, and diverse interests. They include records of her personal and professional career, including her involvements in numerous committees. She was a keen writer, and contributed many articles, especially to the Vancouver Courier. Other records relate to her interest in alternative healing practices and presentations and publications on this and other subjects.

Helen Niskala

Subfonds consists of records relating to Niskala’s education and teaching/research career. These include essays she wrote as a university student, and certificates she received for both academic work and other activities. Teaching materials include course outlines and notes. Her extensive research interests are documented in copies of numerous papers she prepared for publications and presentations at conferences, which include drafts, correspondence and reference material. Many relate to her treatment of people with illnesses with a view to their remaining in the community.

Subfonds consists of records, photographs and audiovisual materials relating to Glennis Zilm's personal and professional involvements. These include her CV and several articles she authored and co-authored. Materials related to various presentations and lectures she prepared on the history of several hospital nursing schools and historic nursing uniforms. Photographs related to awards she received and nursing uniforms worn by Zilm and others.

Community Health Nurses' Group of the Registered Nurses Association of British Columbia

Subfonds consists of records pertaining to the formation, organization, functions, and activities of the Community Health Nurses’ Group, dating from 1978 to 2003. Records of the Executive Committee document activities from 1981 to 1999. Other committee records include those of education, membership, newsletter, planning and public relations.

Some documentation of relationships with regional groups in BC is included, as well as more extensive records of relationships with the RNABC and CHNAC. Papers, pamphlets, surveys and projects records discuss such subjects as the role of the community health nurse. Programs, notes and informational material relate to conferences and workshops hosted or attended by the Community Health Nurses’ Group. Other reports, papers and newspaper clippings relate to community and public health nursing in general. A number of photographs depict community health nursing activities.

Community Health Nurses' Group of the Registered Nurses Association of British Columbia

Margaret Murray Jackson

Subonds consists of 14 cm of textual records, 15 photographs, and other material relating to Jackson's education and nursing career dating from 1927 to 2003, although most are prior to 1987. It includes material relating to her education at high school, the University of British Columbia, the Vancouver General Hospital school of nursing, and the University of Michigan. Other documents relate to her experiences as a Public Health Nurse and her work in Iran on behalf of the World Health Organization.

Records concerning her activities in Iran include appointment and payment records, congratulatory correspondence from the BC government, photographs of Margaret, correspondence to her family detailing her work and other daily activities and experiences, correspondence from a friend also working in Tehran, and other documents received in Iran.

Forms of material include correspondence; diplomas, transcripts, examinations, certificates, and other documents; papers and speeches; a scrapbook, programs, and other memorabilia; photographs, and an audio cassette of her memorial service. One file contains records related to this service held for her at the University of Alberta faculty club June 17, 2003.

Muriel Upshall

Subonds consists of 11 cm of textual records, ca. 230 photographs, and other graphic material dating from 1920 to 1986 pertaining to the life and career of Muriel Upshall. Diplomas, lists, applications, notebooks, memos reports, letter, cards and other documents illustrate her education and career. Correspondence relates to student positions, her provincial Board of Health position in Nanaimo, various projects, professional memberships, student reports and recommended standards and practices for nursing.

Most of the six centimeters of records date from the early 1950s. Training materials for RCAMC Nursing Sisters include notes on teaching techniques, the science of education, lesson plans, an obstetrical manual, and a syllabus used for training RCAMC sisters. Other records include a Royal Canadian Air Force Passenger Flight Authority slip, responses to a medical nursing exam and a study guide with handwritten annotations. Artifacts include medals, pins and other items related to her military service.

Subfonds includes 9 cm of textual records and 7 photographs dating from 1950 to 1998. It includes transcripts of talks and lectures given by Mary for the UVic School of Nursing, Royal Jubilee Hospital’s medical staff, Nurses’ Association Seminar and VGH graduation. Titles include “Let’s Examine the Quality of Care” and “Improvement of Nursing Services Through the Problem Solving Method”.

Correspondence pertains to Mary Richmond’s role as Director of Educational Resources at the RJH and to her consulting work for the University of Victoria’s nursing program. Photographs include two of her 1943 graduating class and a photograph of her with an unidentified individual.

The subfonds consists of three centimetres of textual records dating from 1925 to 1932 and three UBC graduation photographs. Personal effects and memorabilia include a photocopied certificate of birth, correspondence from Mary L. Bollert of the Office of the Dean of Women inquiring if Edith wished to have a membership in one of the sororities, a certificate of recognition as a 50-year member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity, a program for the 10th Annual Spring performance of the UBC Players Club, and a copy of The Art of Cooking and Serving.

Subfonds consists of records related to Dr. Margaret Campbell’s educational and professional career and other activities. They include papers prepared for her MSc and Phd, copies of her theses for these degrees, notes related to her teaching, and results of her professional research. Several papers relate to her development of a nursing model at UBC, while others document her education at Western Reserve and Columbia Universities and her teaching and research career at UBC.

The records reflect Sheila’s long career in teaching and especially writing. She has published numerous books and articles and made presentations at numerous conferences, often collaborating with Glennis Zilm. She has a unique interest in the way evolving uniforms and clothing worn by nurses reflects the changing nature of their work and social relationships. She has created an extensive collection of dolls which document this development.

The subfonds documents the activities of the Richmond-Delta Professional Practice Group from 1967-2002. Records in the subfonds relate to the Group’s administrative and operational functions, coordination of various events, programs and workshops, advocacy around nursing and health care issues and government lobbying initiatives. Records consist of correspondence, minutes, financial documents, agendas, reports, photographs, notes, reference material, memorandum, event programs, invitations and planning, scrapbooks, and other material. The subfonds is divided into three series: Administrative and Operational Records, Workshops and Events, and Lobbying and Advocacy.

Subfonds consists of textual and photographic material. A number of photographs describe her career, while other photographs and some documents relate to her interest in infant feeding devices. Newspaper clippings, articles and other textual material feature articles related to Alice Wright, including articles regarding her work with the RNABC and the International Council of Nurses, her collection of infant feeding devices, and the celebration of her 100th birthday in 1994.

The subfonds consists of 9.8 cm of textual records dating from 1990-2009. By-laws and records of annual and executive meetings include meeting attendance records and other information. Extensive documentation of the partnership with Brazil and the “Living and Nursing Overseas” workshop are included, along with information on other partnerships and projects in Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Nepal, Afghanistan, and other locations. Newsletters from 1991-2008 document other activities.

Delphine Rose Alexander (nee Fletcher)

The subfonds consists of a centimetre of material relating to the nursing career of Delphine Rose Alexander. Most of it concerns her service in the Canadian Army Medical Corps in World War I, although some later information is available. It includes photocopies of forms and photographs relating to Delphine's service in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during WWI, including a group of fifteen photocopied photographs depicting the aftermath of four German air raids on the No. 1 Canadian hospital in Etaples, France on May 18, 1918. Biographical information has been supplied by her son.

Records include correspondence, letters of acceptance, enrolment lists, diplomas, and transcripts relating to her education. Correspondence also relates to her nursing career, with an invitation and published material relating to her investiture in the Order of St. John. Photographs also chronicle her education and career, a collection of artifacts includes crests and a badge from the BC Public Health Service, a graduation hood.

The subfonds consists of two boxes of records dating from 1982 to 2004. These include copies of by-laws, descriptions of executive roles, newsletters, and other administrative records. Minutes of meetings and financial reports that include ledgers and budgets document the activities of the organization. Correspondence consists of both general communications and correspondence related to the PNG bursary fund. Membership lists and other materials are included, as are records related to the various conferences hosted by the Pediatric Nurses’ Group.

Subfonds consists of two boxes of records generated by the Nursing Educational Council between 1978 and 2005 through their meetings and interactions among themselves and with different levels of government. Records include discussions of issues related to standardizing the education of nurses and the equitable provision of nursing care throughout BC. Committee records include the Task Committee on Competency Based Curriculum, the Task Committee on Mandatory Registration, and the Entry to Practice Steering Committee.

Subfonds consists of materials dating from 1962 to 1978. These include minutes, executive minutes, agendas, correspondence, and other administrative records. Minutes of meetings and financial reports that include ledgers and budget document that activities of the organization. Correspondence consists of incoming and outgoing communication by Margaret Kennedy, the last President of the association. A 1974 ledger is included relating to the bed race competition a major annual event hosted by the association to raise funds.
