Collection consists of materials which deal with two different subject areas of interest to Sutherland. One consists of microfilm records relating to the establishment of the Macdonald Institute, which later merged with two other colleges to form the University of Guelph. The other series consists of photocopies of records assembled by Sutherland for various research projects on the history of education.

The fonds consists of records reflecting the myriad of activities under the President's Office. Records relating to the university's founding in its earliest days include records of the early days of Medicine at UBC. Records relating to Indigenous Peoples include the teacher training program and "Native Indian Students at UBC." Documents related to faculties and departments, including Applied Sciences, Arts, Commerce, Forestry, Graduate Studies, VP Finance, Administrative Services, VP Faculty and Student Affairs, Dean of Women, Agricultural Sciences, Dentistry, Education, Law, Medicine, and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Also present are records related to Women at UBC, - including reports on the Status of Academic and Non-Academic Women - Senate Committees and the Board of Governors. Personnel records related to employees, salaries, agreements with Provincial and Territorial Governments and affiliated organizations with UBC, finances, the many UBC committees, advisory groups and records associated with the founding of UBC institutes, foundations, centres and the Faculty Club. There are also records related to the University Endowment Lands and the UBC's planning and development of land and buildings. File contains documents relating to the schooner "Favourite," also called "Favorite." Documents include statements and declarations by Spring regarding "Favourite;" insurance policy; vouchers for expenses incurred by "Favourite;" account and expense sheets, including list of improvements and repairs, provisions purchased, and wages earned; claim to Pelagic Sealing Commission; statement from captain Amos Ellis; and other documents.

Schooner "Winifred" documents

File contains documents relating to the schooner "Winifred," also called "Winnifred." Documents include typed copies of the title, statements of the captain and a crew member, and notice of vessel detainment; draft declaration by Charles Spring regarding "Winnifred;" documents related to the Bering Sea Claims Commission claims; bill of sale for shares of "Winifred" to Spring; repair and improvement receipts; transcript of the record and proceedings of the United States court case against "Winifred;" and other documents.

Schooner "Henrietta" documents

File contains documents relating to the schooner "Henrietta." Documents include accounts and expense sheets, including an accounting of expenses to outfit the vessel, lists of improvements and repairs, and payments to crew; promissory notes / receipts for advances to the crew.

Cereno J. Kelley correspondence

File consists primarily of correspondence between Spring and Captain Cereno Jones Kelley that references exchanges of statements, information, and figures relating to claims for vessels "Kate" and "Favourite." The file also includes a copy of Kelley's letter to F.B. Marvin & Co. upon the seizure of the steamer "Coquitlam," and a document regarding the "Modus Vivendi" on C.J. Kelley & Co. stationery in an unknown hand.

"Favourite" 1892 official log book

Log book contains a list of crew and report of character, draught of water on leaving Victoria harbour, and entries regarding the taking on of a new crew member. Log also notes the warning received from H.M.S. "Daphne" against entering the Bering Sea.

Schooner "Kate" log for 1892

Log by commander A. J. Taylor contains entries on conditions, location, and activities of the crew on "Kate" from March 5, 1892 to August 4, 1892. The June 21 entry notes the arrival of H.M.S. "Daphne." The log also contains a list of crew and provisions taken on board.

Log book contains a list of crew and report of character, as well as entries regarding the warning received from H.M.S. "Daphne" against entering the Bering Sea and the transfer of a crew member to another vessel.

Court papers, police charges, and related documents

Files contains writs of summons, subpoenas, orders, writs of fieri facias, default summonses, etc. against Charles Spring issued between 1892 and 1894 for non-payment of monies owned. The papers originate from the Supreme Court of B.C., Exchequer Court of B.C. Admiralty District, County Court of Victoria, Provincial Police Court, etc. Funds were primarily owed to tradesmen for goods and services rendered for Spring's sealing vessels, as well as to crew members for unpaid wages. The file also contains copies of police charges brought against Charles Spring by sealers for non-payment of wages in 1892, a list of court judgments against Spring, and related notes and documents.

The document serves as an employment contract for the voyage and provides a list of crew members and particulars of engagement, discharge, and release. Notes the desertion of three crew members.

The Department of Dairying was part of the Faculty of Agriculture from 1916 to 1955.

The file contains the agreement and account of crew for the schooner "Penelope," owned by Donald Urquhart. The document serves as an employment contract for the voyage and provides a list of crew members and particulars of engagement, discharge, and release. Notes the release of crew members due to sickness and the engagement of new crew members.

The fonds consists of material related to David Aberle's research activities, academic work and writing. It includes the notebooks and journals of his fieldwork beginning in 1940-41 and continuing through 1991. These consist primarily of field notes and other notes made during and after those trips. The vast majority of this material relates to Aberle's work with the Navajo in Arizona. The fonds also includes notes, articles, data and codes relating to Aberle's research into kinship and language among the Navajo, Mongols and Athapaskans, and extensive research into Navajo culture and economy. The fonds also includes correspondence on a variety of academic subjects, including Aberle's teaching materials from UBC's Department of Anthropology and Sociology. His work includes several reports written as part of the Navajo-Hopi land dispute. The fonds includes research notes for many of Aberle's essays and articles, as well as chapters and appendixes of his books.

Memorial of the owners of sealing schooners…

File contains a memorial regarding regulations restricting the sealing industry brought forth by 25 owners of a number of vessels, including the "Venture," "Penelope," and ships formerly owned by Spring, "Favourite" (or "Favorite") and "Kate." The memorial is addressed to the Governor-General of Canada in Council.

A Visit to British Columbia 1898

An album of photographs from a trip to British Columbia (plus Spokane, Washington), by a man identified only as F.L.M., accompanied by at least two others (McMillan and English). The images depict a number of cities as well as landscapes and some mining and manufacturing facilities. It is a pre-printed album made by Kodak, though the original housing mechanisms appear to be missing and the photos are glued to the page. Some pages are blank, but it does not appear that photos have been removed; though three sheets have been cut out from the back.

It is possible that an unknown individual added their snapshots on the facing pages to a book of Lesson images.

Fonds consists of Daniells' personal and professional incoming and outgoing correspondence, diaries, speeches, radio broadcasts, manuscripts, poetry, subject files, research files, postcards and postcard collections, clippings, financial records, audio material, photographs, memorabilia and printed material. Also included are the records of Roy's parents, James and Constance Daniells. The correspondence series contains thousands of letters from prominent literary figures such as Earle Birney, Robert Finch, Desmond Pacey, Northrop Frye, Herbert Davis, E.K. Brown, A.S.P. Woodhouse, as well as writers, poets, and artists such as Paul Hiebert (Sara Binks), Carol Coates, Max Maynard, Jack Shadbolt and others. His works are represented by manuscripts of his poetry, fiction, drama, scholarly work on Milton and modernism and Canadian literature, speeches and broadcasts, autobiography, diaries, and many letters to his family. The fonds also contains notes of sympathy received by Daniells' family after his death.

The papers also include printed material from the Canadian Association of Rhodes Scholars and Balliol College.
