Harry Adaskin fonds

Fonds consists almost entirely of materials created or acquired by Harry Adaskin throughout his life and career. It includes the manuscripts for his autobiographies, correspondence, scripts for radio broadcasts and lectures, newspaper clippings, and concert programmes, photographs, films, and audio recordings. Also included are annotated copies of Adaskin's two autobiographies: A Fiddler's World (published in 1977), and A Fiddler's Choice (1982). Some outside correspondence addressed to his wife Frances after his death is also included. The collection is an assemblage of movie memorabilia (predominantly Noir and Western), 20cm x 25cm film-stills, 28 cm x 36 cm lobby cards, and ephemera amassed by Thompson as a part of her research for her books Hard-Boiled and Tall in the Saddle. Additionally, there are Science Fiction stills and posters, Spanish-language lobby cards, 36cm x 91cm insert posters, and miscellaneous stills from other 20th-century cinema.

Fritz Lehmann fonds

Fonds consists almost entirely of textual materials created or acquired by Fritz Lehmann, in both his professional and personal capacities. The materials include research notes, lecture materials, course hand-outs, manuscripts of articles and book reviews, research papers written by students, correspondence, reports, newspaper and magazine clippings (original and photocopied), and research grant applications. Also included are a folder of tributes written after Lehmann's death, and some personal correspondence addressed to Joanna Lehmann.
The fonds is arranged in the following series: Lecture Materials, Indian railways Correspondence and Research, Course Materials, Correspondence, Publications, Book Reviews, Personal, and Research Grants and Applications. These series largely reflect the original order in which the fonds was acquired. Most materials are arranged in chronological order, to reflect the evolution of Lehmann's teaching and research interests and activities.

Lehmann, Fritz

Continuing Education fonds

The fonds consist of proceedings, correspondence, minutes, reports, statistics, program and course descriptions, proposals, news releases, and publications. Many of the records originated from the Director's Office of the Centre for Continuing Education, and its predecessor, the Department of University Extension. They document these units' functions, activities, policies, and relationships with other University bodies and external agencies. Also included are audio recordings of lectures and other events sponsored by the Centre. There are also records from the office of the Associate Vice-President, Academic, from when he oversaw the operations of the Centre between 1988 and 1991. Other materials originated from the Women's Resources Centre: three folders of reports, correspondence, and photocopied newspaper clippings relating to the 1971 Status of Women conference, and over thirty publications dealing with women's issues.
A 2017 accrual of material more than doubled the size of the fonds. These records included small additions to the following series: Central Office Files, Administrative Committees, and Staff Relations. More significant additions were added to the Projects and Series, Programs, UBC Departments, UBC Committees, and External Bodies series. Additionally, a significant addition to the fonds was made in the resources series, which includes proceedings and course materials.
A 2018 accrual moderately increased the size of the fonds. Some files from folders without the typical alpha-numerical filing system pattern were placed with the Central Office series. Their contents matched the series description, including grant proposals, memos, correspondence, and budget information. Two new series were added, General History and Associate Vice-President Academic (Dr. Walter Uegama). Dr. McClean's series received additions from the 1992 re-organization and the Strategic Planning of 1993. Projects and Studies, UBC Committees, and UBC Departments series received significant additions as well. External Bodies received an increase, primarily related to CAUCE. The Liaison with External Agencies, Policies and Procedures, Programs, Special Events, and Status of Women series received small additions.

John Corry fonds

Fonds consists of material related to a documentary film made by John Corry, entitled “Life's Imprint: Lithographs by Jack Shadbolt.” This 1994 film documents Canadian artist Jack Shadbolt’s production of a four-part colour lithograph, done over a 9-month period in collaboration with lithographer Torrie Groenig. The film was produced and directed by Corry, with the support of the National Film Board of Canada and Knowledge Network., and was originally broadcast on CBC, Bravo!, and Knowledge Network. It includes scenes from Shadbolt’s studio in Burnaby and the Limited Editions studio in Gastown.

Material includes the master tapes from filming, production notes, photographs, obituaries for Shadbolt (who died in 1998), and promotional and distribution documents.

Fredeman, William E.

At Home in the Universe: The Life and Times of William Shatner fonds

Fonds consists of audiovisual material created or compiled during production as well as 14 folders of written documentation related to the production of the film. It consists largely of interviews with Shatner, members of his family and associates, portions of previous roles portrayed by Shatner, as well as reminiscences from other prominent actors such as Leonard Nimoy, Kate Mulgrew, Patrick Stewart and Jason Alexander. There is also extensive footage of Shatner at his ranch, hosting his annual charity horseshow, touring his childhood home and McGill University, and his attempts to save the wild horses of Santa Cruz Island.
The content of this fonds is housed on several different video and audio formats: such as Betacam SP(small) and (large), Hi-8, VHS, U-Matic tape (¾ in.), audiocassette tape and DAT audio tape. Much of this audio and video material was used in the production of the final “cut” of the documentary, and content is represented across several of these formats, with audio content found in both audio and video formats.

The fonds reflects Leonard and Kitty Maracle's involvement in the British Columbia Association of Non-Status Indians (BCANSI), as well as various other Aboriginal organizations, committees, clubs, programs, projects and events. Jean Coulthard fonds

The fonds consists of Coulthard's incoming family and general correspondence, correspondence from noted English composer Elizabeth Poston, financial records, biographical information, printed material and clippings documenting her involvement in the Canadian and International music communities as an advocate, educator and composer. Also included are original manuscripts of Coulthard's compositions and published and unpublished sound recordings of her work performances. The fonds also contain scrapbooks assembled by Coulthard's mother, Jean Robinson Coulthard, between 1898 and 1929, family photographs, and a photograph album compiled by her father, Dr. Walter Coulthard, depicting the Rossland area (ca. 1902).
Fonds are arranged into two sous-fonds: Jean Coulthard sous-fonds and Coulthard family sous-fonds. The fonds consists of photographs and textual records spanning the period 1710-1984, predominantly 1850-1940, related to business and personal lives of five generations of the McLennan family (immediate and extended), as well as to the work of Montreal lawyer, Frederick Griffin. McLennan family materials consist of photographs; incoming and outgoing correspondence; genealogical information and family histories; diaries and remembrances; newspaper clippings and ephemera; official documents; obituaries and tributes; drafts of writings, research notes, and sketches; and other documents.

The McLennan family materials includes a series reflecting William McLennan’s writing career, personal interests, and family life. William McLennan’s materials include full and partial drafts of published and unpublished works; research and reference materials; incoming and outgoing correspondence; legal and official documents; collected historical materials and documents; notes; sketches; journals; newspaper clippings and ephemera; photographs; and other materials.

The fonds also consists of a series reflecting Frederick Griffin’s occupation as a lawyer and his role as founder of the Canadian Loan Company. Frederick Griffin’s materials include incoming correspondence and draft responses; various financial and legal documents; legal research notes and drafts of legal documents; memoranda; meeting minutes; land and property documents and surveyors reports; newspaper clippings and ephemera; and other documents.

Finally, the fonds contains a series consisting of William Durie McLennan’s records, which were primarily created between 1914 and 1915 and pertain to his military service during the First World War. Record types in this series include the following: a handwritten, personal notebook; a typescript of this notebook; correspondence; service records from the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Forces; news clippings; black and white photographs; collected signatures from Canadian dignitaries; and materials from the 5th Battery Association of 1914.

Manufacturing Consent fonds

Fonds consists of textual and audiovisual material relating to the production of the movie "Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media", released in 1992, and the companion book by Mark Achbar published in 1994. The filmmakers chose to capture
the majority of their work on film, rather than video, for several reasons. Firstly, during the 1980’s, video resolution was significantly lower than film negative and in an effort to ensure the image resolution was high film was chosen as the predominant medium.
As well, the NFB (National Film Board) was equipped primarily for film shooting, processing and editing. Finally, the motivation to participate in film festivals, which wanted film rather than video, compelled the filmmakers to use film as their medium. Some small format video, captured using rented broadcast quality video gear, was used for long talks or events which would have been uneconomical to shoot in film. The audiovisual material includes original camera negatives, audio and video tapes and sound bites used as research material and in the making of the film as well as some post-production rough cuts, alternative versions and promotional material relating to the distribution of the film and subsequent video. The textual material includes pre and post-production materials as well as production logs and graphical materials. Much of the post-production material relates to the promotion of the film and the media coverage of the film and of Noam Chomsky.

Fonds consists mainly of correspondence between Ellen Jaffe and Jane Rule, written between 1996 and 2001. The first series follows a letter Jaffe wrote to Rule in appreciation of the TVO film Fiction and Other Truths about her life and work. The rest of the letters deal with Jaffe asking to use quotes from the film in her book Writing Your Way and her visiting Rule on Galiano Island in 2001 to give her a copy of the book. The folder also includes a copy of Jaffe’s book, with the quotes from Jane Rule bookmarked.

The fonds consists of records related to Zeljko Kujundzic’s role as an artist as well as his role as an educator. There are also records related to his personal life. The fonds consists of three series: artist records; teaching and professional records; and personal and administrative records.

Records relating to the first series, Kujundzic’s artist records are divided into two subseries: artwork and projects, and exhibitions and publicity. The artwork and projects subseries contains records related to the production of his artwork, including drafts, studio works, sketchbooks, writings, poetry, and research and inspiration materials. It also includes several pieces of Kujundzic’s artistic media, such as his metal moulds and woodblock prints. The subseries exhibitions and publicity consists of records relating to Kujundzic’s public appearances and the exhibitions and galleries he was part of. It includes magazine articles, newspaper and press clippings, artwork commissions, posters and pamphlets, and photocopies of articles about Kujundzic and his art.

Records in the series teaching and professional records relate to his role as a professor and as a member and director of arts societies. Fonds consists of departmental records from Anthropology and Sociology (1964-2000); Canadian Sociology and Anthropology Association records (1970-1979); and material relating to the Simon Fraser University dispute concerning the Department of Political Science, Sociology and Anthropology (1969-1971). Ames assembled this group of records through his participation on the C.S.A.A. team, which studied the situation. The papers also include Ames's descriptions of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Museums Association (1980-1983) and the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (1967-1995). The material relating to the Shastri Institute includes records generated or collected by Ames and other members of the Institute at UBC. The names of other members are indicated in the file title. Also, the fonds contains manuscripts and drafts, records about Ames's research, courses taught by Ames, a variety of conferences and seminars, and records about Ames’ participation in several museum studies program reviews. Finally, the fonds also contain Ames' involvement with the Museum of Anthropology (MOA). Most records as Director and Acting Director of MOA are held at the MOA Archives. The fonds consists of diaries, scrapbooks, and correspondence spanning the period 1910-2003 and related to the professional and personal lives of three generations of the Bamford family—William Blackley Bamford, his son William Blackley Stanley Bamford, and his grandson William Huestis Bamford—as well as to members of the Lasell and Ord families, related by marriage to William Huestis Bamford. Diaries in the fonds include concise “five year” or “line a day” diaries, as well as more detailed daily journals and many cover aspects of the Bamfords’ professional and personal life.

Scrapbooks in the fonds, which contain newspaper clippings, ephemera, correspondence, photographs, notes, and other material, primarily reflect the Bamfords’ personal interests, but also interests their chosen professions and employers, including the Canadian Pacific Railway Company and the Bank of Montreal. Beyond the incoming and outgoing personal and professional correspondence included in the scrapbooks, the Esther Adelina Lasell Bamford series contains incoming correspondence related to a branch of the Ord family living in New Zealand.

The fonds also includes a heavily-annotated copy of the second (2003) edition of Slater's Orwell: The Road To Airstrip One.

The collection contains three binders of 198 cards from a variety of First Nations Northwest Coast artists, predominantly Robert Davidson, but also including Bill Reid, Roy Henry Vickers, Arthur Thompson, Joe David, David Seymour, Ron Hamilton, Stan Greene, Freda Diesing, Ken Mowatt, Richard Hunt, and others. The cards were collected by the MacDonalds starting in the 1960s. Many of the cards were intended by the artists for use in local potlatches, weddings, housewarmings, graduations, births, funerals, and other major life events and include inscriptions and/or notes from the artists to the MacDonalds.

The collection comprises records acquired by Peter Moogk about aspects of British Columbia’s history, including the British Columbia Electric Railway Company’s interurban train lines (predominantly from 1909-1958), and photographic representations of persons (especially white settlers, from 1870-1960), places, events and activities in the province.

The collection includes six series: British Columbia Electric Railway Company Records, Portraits of Persons in British Columbia, Photos of places, streets, and architecture in British Columbia, Photos of events and activities in British Columbia, British Columbia ephemera and Records from British Columbia Penitentiary.

Records relating to the first series, British Columbia Electric Railway Company Records, include: photographs; postcards; original BCER documents, such as union agreements and timetables; BCER employee publications; transit tokens; signs and posters from within Vancouver streetcars; and a copy of a CJOR radio script.

Records relating to the second series, Portraits of Persons in British Columbia, include: photographs and handwritten notes by Moogk about Vancouver photographers operating from 1858-1920.

The focus of the third series, Photos of places, streets, and architecture in British Columbia, is photographs of structures and places of British Columbia, notably building exteriors and interiors, and street views from 1880-1959.

The fourth series, Photos of events and activities in British Columbia, includes photos of notable events and public activities (predominantly dating 1911-1941), as well as everyday life, and also includes handwritten and photocopied information on the provenance of the photos and activities depicted.

The fifth series, British Columbia ephemera, is mostly paper ephemera representing the variety of business and activity in the province from 1890 to 1990, and includes menus, theatre programs, business correspondence, and Chinese textbooks as well as some photographic materials.

The sixth series, Records from British Columbia Penitentiary, includes textual records and photographs relating to the British Columbia penitentiary.
