Manuscripts and drafts [1 of 3]

File consists of manuscripts and drafts of the text “Methode Hanne Wassermann. Das erste psychologisch fundierte gymastische System mit Bewegungskontrolle.” (“The Hanne Wassermann Method. The First Psychologically-Based Gymnastic System with Movement Control.” ) There is also a copy of Gymnastik Methode Hanne Wassermann and an empty dossier titled “Hanna Wassermann’s Book.”

Education records

File contains certificates of completion for Hanne’s studies in elementary school, secondary school, and college. As a post-secondary student at the Graphic Teaching and Research Institute’s School of Photography and Reproduction in Vienna, she studied such subjects as freehand drawing, geometric drawing, natural philosophy, and commercial arithmetic and business essays, in addition to portrait photography. This file also contains a handwritten document from the Rontgen Institute describing her time there working as a nurse, her training, and the reason she stopped working there. Additionally, this file contains two photographs depicting Hanne during her time at the Rontgen Institute.

Marriage to Gustav Wassermann

File consists of records pertaining to the life of Dr. Gustav Wassermann, including copies of his and Hanne’s marriage certificate, his death certificate, and other official government papers. Hanne appears to have obtained copies of this documentation related to her late husband in 1938.

Houses/properties in Canada

File consists of records pertaining to the North Vancouver and West Vancouver homes/properties that Hanne and George owned from 1951 until Hanne’s death in 1986. The first of these properties was located at 932 East 19th Street, North Vancouver, and purchased in 1951. It was sold in 1971, at which time the Walkers purchased the second property, located at 2905 Marine Drive, West Vancouver. The records in this file include deeds of land, certificates of non-encroachment, and lot plans. There is also correspondence with lawyers pertaining to the sale of one property and the purchase of the other.

George Walker correspondence

Subseries consists of correspondence mailed to George Walker since his coming to North America, except for two letters written to George by his wife, Hanne, during her transatlantic crossing several days before his. The subseries includes a large collection of letters from George’s older brother William (“Billy”) Orr Walker in Northern Ireland.

George Walker personal records

Subseries consists of records pertaining to the life of George Walker, including his immigration from Britain, official documentation (such as an application for divorce from his first wife or a photocopy of his death certificate), and personal papers such as notes for a sermon.

Miscellaneous metadata information

File consists of slips of metadata paper salvaged from envelopes that were severely damaged by vinegar syndrome. The negatives held by these envelopes were in such poor condition they had to be destroyed, however, these papers provide basic information about the lost photographs.

Correspondence with brother in Northern Ireland [2 of 4]

File contains correspondence sent to George by his brother, William (Billy) Orr Walker. The content of these letters includes descriptions of life in Northern Ireland (including the early stages of what became known as “The Troubles”), personal health issues, local information, and details about family. Some letters mention George’s daughter Norah and his ex-wife, Sophia Elizabeth Graham. On occasion, William also included newspaper clippings with his letters. William died in 1975.

Other letters to George Walker

File consists of letters written to George by Hanne, Otto Fischer, St. Andrew’s United Church in Vancouver, a woman seeking advice/counsel from George, various contacts in Canada, and friends and family from Northern Ireland, including his sister-in-law, Nan. There is also one telegraph written by George and sent to Hanne. A number of letters from 1975 discuss the death of George’s brother and, when this brother's widow also died later that year, the couple’s estate.

Correspondence from other family members

File contains letters from Hanne's nephews Peter and Fritz Fischer in New York. The nephews discuss the current events in their lives. Included in this file is photograph of Hanne at age 89, taken during a visit by Fritz and his wife, Herta, in Vancouver. There is also an undated card from Hedy and Alexander Wassermann, who may have been Hanne's in-laws from her first marriage.

Professional associations correspondence

File contains correspondence related to professional associations Hanne was either a member of or seeking to join. There is also one letter sent from a professor at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Medicine. Organizations reflected in this file are the Chartered Association of Massage and Medical Gymnastics (U.K.), the Association of Physiotherapists and Massage Practitioners (B.C.), and the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy.

Adolf Ludwig Mandl

File consists of correspondence sent to Hanne by her long-time friend Adolf Ludwig Mandl, with the earliest letters dating back to Hanne’s days in Brioni, Italy.

Postcards from friends

File consists of postcards sent to Hanne from friends throughout her life, from destinations around the world. Cards were sent to her home address in Vienna and later North Vancouver, as well as to the Hotel Brioni where she taught during the summers for many years, prior to fleeing Europe.

Ephemera - Business/address cards

File consists of business cards, change of address notices, and slips of paper bearing the names of individuals (sometimes with additional handwritten notes on them). Some of the cards belonged to: John A. Embry, Paul M. Marshall, the Duke of Di Spoleto, Adolf Ludwig Mandl, Constance von Linden, and Alfonso Froner. These cards can trace their origins to various locations: Austria, Italy, England, the United States, and Canada.

Ephemera - Health and wellness

File consists of materials pertaining to health and wellness, including handwritten notes (B.C. Medical Plan phone number; title of a book on women’s hygiene), an unfilled prescription, and a small pamphlet with information about edema and hypertension.

“Bezahlt” stamp

Item is a small rubber stamp featuring a single word: “Bezahlt” (Paid). The stamp-makers name and address is affixed to the wooden body of the stamp.

Artefacts - Leather pouch containing keys

File consists of a leather pouch containing three keys (one of which is attached to the pouch and therefore both are counted as a single item) and four key tags. These key tags are circular plastic discs, each bearing different words: Hangekoffer Klein, Sofrankkoffer Innen, Schreibmaschine, and [illegible]. Only one of these tags has a key attached.

"Comité" metal pin

Item is a metal pin attached to a green ribbon. An image on the pin depicts a person and a hunting dog facing a stag with a small cross floating over its antlers.

Stretches, poses, and fitness

This file consists of photographs taken during the first 10-15 years of Trude Fleischmann’s career in Vienna. These photos depict Hanne Wassermann and other models demonstrating stretches and poses developed by Hanne as part of her original fitness method, including those exercises that involve the use of a handheld rubber ring. Hanne is most often the lone subject of these images (some of which were later reproduced to accompany articles and other publications by/about Hanne); however, there are some photographs in which Hanne is accompanied by at least one other model. Several photos depict four women engaged in ring exercises. Most of the images appear to have been taken in Trude’s studio, however there are some which were taken outside at unspecified locations (possibly Brioni, Italy).

Many of the photographs in this file are signed by Trude, and feature her studio’s imprint and/or logo. Larger photographs are mounted on card stock while some of the smaller items were printed on postcard paper. On the backs of some photographs are notes by Trude and Hanne written in pencil or pen (in some cases, many years after the pictures were originally printed). There are also several oversized items in this file including an advertisement for Hanne’s fitness program (featuring four Fleischmann photographs of Hanne) and four poster-size pages depicting the many stretches and positions Hanne taught as part of her health program, each page with over twenty small photographs affixed to it.

Fleischmann textual records

File consists of a small amount of textual records related to Trude’s friendship with Hanne. There is a magazine clipping featuring one of Trude’s photos of Hanne, materials related to a lecture series Hanne held at Trude’s New York studio, and a single letter written to Hanne on the back of a photograph. This file also includes two empty envelopes from Trude's Vienna studio.

Portraiture

File consists of portrait photography by Hanne. She photographed people of all ages, many of whom were members of the Koerner family (Beatrice Koerner, Iby Koerner, Sidney Koerner, Theo Koerner, N. Koerner, and Stephen Koerner). Other subjects include: Peter Sloan, Johnny Sloan, Gordon Sloan, Elizabeth Prentis, Marietta Prentis, Joan Bolton, Michael Bolton, M. Lourie, Suzanne Lourie, Gita Lourie, Marianne McCrae, Bob Maier, Anna L. Maier, Maria Bergson, Dennis Molnar, Joe Jetter, Otto Pick, Bill Robinson, and Sophie Atkinson. Additionally, there are various self-portraits by Hanne as well as pictures of her husband, George Walker. Also included in this file are two small, rectangular pieces of wood bound together with string. This unlabelled wooden binding contained a set of photos (PH-3412 to 3510), most of which were portraits.

Fitness Instruction and Innovation

Series consists of materials pertaining to Hanne’s lifelong work as a fitness instructor and innovator, especially in the field of women’s health and physical fitness. Hanne developed a range of workouts, stretches, and exercise methods, many of which she chronicled in essays, newspaper/magazine articles, and lectures. This series includes manuscripts, writing drafts, and clippings by Hanne and others related to the topic of health and fitness. In addition to her role a fitness pioneer in the early half of the 20th century, Hanne also worked as an instructor, personal trainer, and massage therapist. This series includes the client ledgers Hanne kept during her time in Europe and North America.

Miscellaneous photographs

File consists of an assortment of photographs taken by Hanne or sent to her by family and friends. File also contains seven slips of paper containing metadata information associated with photographic negatives in this collection. However, these textual materials were received separated from their respective photographs and therefore do not have identifiable PH numbers associated with them.

Immigration to Canada via the U.S.

File contains textual records pertaining to George’s immigration to the U.S. from Europe, including a U.S. customs information booklet and (later) completed copies of his U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service paperwork. Also included in the file are tickets, receipts, and other records from his transatlantic voyage from Genoa, Italy, to New York City (January 2-12, 1940).

Personal records

File contains personal records of George Walker, including two copies of his last will and testament (1939 and 1962 respectively); an affidavit related to a 1940 arrest in Reno, Nevada; a 1941 application for divorce from his first wife; and a photocopy of his death certificate.

Other materials pertaining to George Walker

File contains typed notes by George on the subject of “The Void,” in which he cites various texts on the subject of the void (in a spiritual context). Also included is the typed script for the presiding minister at a typical Christian wedding service, as well as a newspaper clipping from California in which George is interviewed about Londoners' gratitude for American ambulances during the war.

Hedwig Herrmann correspondence [1 of 2]

File contains correspondence from Hedwig Herrmann to her daughter, Hanne, sent between 1939 and 1940. Included in this file is a letter Hedwig wrote in 1939 when she thought she was not going to be able to get out of Vienna and live with Hanne abroad. Hedwig died in December 1940.

Elizabeth Fischer correspondence

File consists of correspondence sent from Hannah’s sister, Elizabeth (Else) Fischer. These letters are all written in German, with the exception of one note on the back of a photograph and a typed letter written in the voice of one of Else’s dogs, addressed to one of Hanne’s dogs.

Anton Drexler files

File contains records from Anton Drexler, property manager of the building owned by the Wassermann family in Vienna. Among these records is a document in which an unidentified party (presumably Hanne) gives power of attorney to Drexler for the purposes of managing the sale of the building. Other records are account statements for costs associated with building maintenance and upkeep.

Gustav Rinesch correspondence re: sale of Vienna property

File consists of correspondence between Hanne and Dr. Gustav Rinesch of Vienna, the lawyer who worked with her in the postwar period, helping her to recover what she could of her European assets (including that was which was bequeathed to her and her sister by their deceased mother). He helped Hanne throughout the process of selling the family’s property in Vienna.

Correspondence related to activities in the U.S.

File contains correspondence pertaining to Hanne’s health and fitness work in the United States. Most of these letters are from Douglas Aircraft Company in Santa Monica, California, for which she provided a safety training course.

John Martin Gilbert

File consists of letters sent by artist/illustrator John Martin Gilbert (1926-2013), who was a family friend of Hanne and her husband. In one letter, he refers to himself as their unofficial adopted son. Most of the letters were sent while John and his wife, Karin, were traveling in Norway in 1964.

Ephemera - Newspaper/magazine clippings

File consists of newspaper clippings on a range of topics. There are several photocopied columns by John Nichol in The Telegram, as well as various human interest pieces from newspapers in California and British Columbia. There is also an article about artist Sophe Atkinson featuring a photograph taken by Hanne.

Artefacts - Metal engravings (for printmaking) and stamps

File contains metal and rubber stamps used by Hanne for the textual materials she printed related to her work as a fitness instructor, writer, and innovator. There are stamps of photographs of Hanne demonstrating poses, stamps of her name and the heading from at least one pamphlet, and there are rubber stamps that would have had more administrative purposes — one of these has the name and address of her gymnastics school while the other simply says “Bezahlt” (Paid).
