This series contains materials accumulated by Ian McDonald related to the writing of his book “The Red Baron of IBEW Local 213” written about his father, Les McDonald. Materials include digital sound recordings of interviews, research articles, notebooks, consent forms, a draft royalty agreement, a draft chapter and a press marketing questionnaire.

File contains an essay written by Ian McDonald on the Lenkurt strike and his father's role within the strike; the full title is "Spontaneity Went Out With Spartacus: IBEW Local 213, Les McDonald, and the Lenkurt Strike of 1966." Ian McDonald considers the essay to be a continuation of his work on his 1986 Master's thesis, which discussed the IBEW before the Lenkurt strike.

Fonds consists of records related to the organization of the Paul Robeson Memorial Concert and the accompanying oral history project. Textual series in this fonds include financial records, oral history project plans and concert planning. There is also a series which contains the audio recordings of the interviews conducted by the committee.

This collection contains organizational material and associated publications related to Ken Heibert's activity as a member of the socialist group, Socialist Challenge/Gauch socialiste, and its latter manifestation as the New Socialist Group.

The fonds consists primarily of video recordings of interviews, meetings, seminars, performances, and local footage shot in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, East Timor and Indonesia. It consists of 178 video recordings including 97 beta tapes (large and small), 80 VHS tapes and a broadcast DVD and six audio recordings. Many of the video elements include both a beta and VHS copy. The fonds is divided into three series. The largest of the three series consists of beta and VHS tapes of raw footage and background research shot or collected by Brière from Canada, the United Kingdom, Indonesia and East Timor. This series also includes six audio recordings. There is a separate series of video recordings of lectures and interviews with Noam Chomsky regarding East Timor recorded during his visit to Vancouver in March 1996. The third series consists of beta masters of the finished documentary, including video in NTSC and PAL formats, and English, French and Swedish language versions.
Much of the content of "Bitter Paradise" consists of interviews with Canadian and foreign individuals engaged in the events in East Timor, either as businessmen, bureaucrats or politicians working with the Indonesian government on trade and development projects in East Timor, or as activists, dissidents, and supporters of the liberation movements within the island nation. In Canada, interviews with Warren Allmand, David Kilgour and Svend Robinson (federal Members of Parliament), David Webster of the East Timor Alert Network, Geoffrey Robinson (Amnesty International, now UCLA History Department), portray the interests of those supporting the resistance. At the same time, Colin Baker (Simons Engineering), David Mundy (Kilbourn Engineering) and Ron Richardson (Asia Pacific Foundation) identify business and development opportunities in East Timor and Indonesia for Canadian companies. There are insights on East Timor supplied through interviews with local and international actors, including Noam Chomsky and Carmel Budiardjo (an Indonesian dissident and founder of TAPOL). Also, with an Amnesty International prisoner of conscience, Constancio Pinto (former guerrilla fighter and currently Timor Leste Ambassador to Washington) and Muchtar Pakpahan, a labour leader jailed repeatedly in Indonesia who, in 2011, resigned as head of the Indonesian Labour Party. The documentary also includes live footage from international broadcasters (BBC, Australian Broadcasting Corp.) of the Dili Massacre (Santa Cruz Cemetery) in November 1991, when more than 260 protesters were killed by Indonesian troops. The broadcast filming of that event, first shown on ITV, the UK in 1992, was pivotal in the campaign to bring western nations to apply pressure for independence, achieved a decade later.
The fonds also contains archival film footage from the Portuguese era of East Timor, a film on projects being undertaken in the country by the Roman Catholic Church, smuggled footage of the East Timorese resistance movement in countryside, footage of Indonesian troops being trained in Australia and of the Indonesian invasion of East Timor.

The subseries contains materials collected by Alfie Huston, who served as the President of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 213 from 1985-1988. Materials include correspondence, newspaper clippings, convention reports, minutes, affidavits, court orders, settlement agreements, campaign materials, business office reports, newsletters, financial reports, discussion papers, safety bulletins, organizing committee resolutions, telegrams and membership lists.

The fonds reflects Patrice Pratt’s political and labour union careers and her community organization involvement. Records in the fonds relate to Pratt’s various roles within the Federal and Provincial NDP, as President of the BCNDP and as a constituency, committee, council, and party member, the BCGEU and BC Federation of Labour. Records consist of professional and personal correspondence, reports, communications, reference and resource material, convention materials, pamphlets and programs, newspaper clippings, agendas, minutes, resolutions, constitutions, policies, membership lists, campaign and platform materials, publications, campaign buttons, banners and other material. As Pratt held various roles simultaneously throughout her career and much of her union work informed her political career, this overlap is reflected in her files. Records are divided into series based on the role held by Pratt at the beginning of the process, resulting in some record dates falling outside the official boundaries of the role she was working in.

File contains a copy of a paper presented by James L. Turk of the University of Toronto at the Annual Meeting of the Canadian Oral History Association in June 1980. The full title of the paper is "Labour During the Cold War: Oral History in the Study of the Survival of the United Electrical Workers in Canada."

The fonds consists of records related to the Association of University and College Employees' (AUCE's) provincial and local chapters activities, efforts, publications, and ephemera. Records span the Provincial and local unions' initial accreditation in 1973, to the Provincial union disbanding in 1985, and then follow the Local 1 (University of British Columbia) chapter through to its merger with CUPE in 1985 and forward into the late 2000's. Executive series: contains records relating to the executive functioning of the provincial union and Local 1 union chapters. Record types include union constitutions, by-laws, and amendments, minutes and agendas of executive meetings, and executive correspondence.

Advocacy and Bargaining series: comprised of records relating to the unions' efforts to advocate on behalf of their members and bargain as a collective unit. Record types include dockets, agendas, and minutes of Annual Conventions and Special Conventions, as well as minutes of the meetings of the General Membership, records pertaining to collective agreements between the workers and employers, including union contracts, and records following strikes, working conditions, and specific efforts that the AUCE and Local 1 undertook in response to provincial governmental and administrative changes.

Committees series: contains records related to the Local 1 and AUCE committees, including the Strike Committee, Contract Committee, Provincial Health and Safety Committee, Provincial Affiliation Committee, Communications Committee, Parking Fee Committee, Grievance Committee, and Merger Committee. Record types include meeting agendas, minutes, newsletters and correspondence, as well as related reports and materials interfiled with committee records.

AUCE Local Chapters Series: consists of records related to chapters 2 through 6 of the AUCE. The records feature the activities of the local chapters of Local 2, at Simon Fraser University (SFU), Local 3, at Notre Dame University of Nelson, Local 4, at Capilano College, Local 5, at College of New Caledonia, and Local 6, Teaching Support Staff at SFU (TSSU). Record types include meeting agendas, minutes, correspondence, contracts, and records related to local chapter strikes and contract negotiations, as well as secession from AUCE.

Correspondence and Related Material Series: consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence of AUCE Local 1, as well as related materials interfiled with correspondence. Record types primarily consist of letters, though some other materials such as minutes and agendas of meetings are present.

Finally, the Photographs, Publications, News Clippings, and Ephemera series features photographs, slides, third party publications, news clippings, scrapbooks, pins, posters, and other ephemera documenting current events, legislation affecting the union and its members, as well as provincial and local union strikes, protests and rallies.

File contains a photocopy of Charlie Caron's autobiography, describing his involvement in labour issues in Canada in the the 1930s primarily. Caron also provides a historical account of the activities of the Communist Party of Canada up to the 1970s.

Fonds consists primarily of correspondence, published materials, and other documentation related to Potrebenko's writing career and publications. Also included are materials she accumulated in relation to her involvement with local labour activism.

The fonds consists of material relating to the founding and early history of the AUCE on campus.

The collection reflects the research interests of Maurice Hodgson and includes research correspondence and notes, films, cassettes, microfilms, photographs, and slides. The series divides into three series: Belcher Research and Work, Polar Research and Work, and Herridge Research and Work.

The collection documents Mark Thompson's involvement in the arbitration of labour disputes in British Columbia. It consists of published conference proceedings (1967-1979), copies of various collective agreements, arbitration and mediation case files (1973-1988), and reviews of the Employment Standards Act (1990-1996), and includes correspondence, reports, legal documents, notes, and published materials.

The research collection consists of interviews conducted for a published biography on Grace MacInnis. Interviewees include Dave Barrett, Rosemary Brown, Cliff Scotton, Harold Winch, and Bruce Woodsworth. She also collected speeches made by Grace MacInnis in the House of Commons as printed by Hansard, 1966-1974.

The subseries contains newspaper clippings, pamphlets, official correspondence, bulletins and other ephemera collected by Barry Sharbo, who was the spokesperson for the breakaway movement from IBEW Local 213 in 1967 which would eventually become the Canadian Union of Electrical Workers (CEW/CEWU/UE). Also contains a copy of the CEW's constitution and a proof copy of the first issue of Live Wire, the CEW's newspaper.

The subseries contains materials related to the 1966 wildcat strike by IBEW Local 213 workers at Lenkurt Electric, in which 257 members participated in a walkout that resulted in the loss of their jobs. A large number of the group were women protesting the employer’s demands for them to work overtime. The month-long dispute that followed was at times violent in response to the court injunctions and police presence sought by the employer.

The subseries is predominantly comprised of newspaper articles collected around the time of the strike; there are also legal documents related to Les McDonald’s appeal of his suspension following the Lenkurt strike, pamphlets, correspondence and photocopies of meeting minutes made by Ian McDonald.

The fonds primarily includes records that were produced and acquired by Greenpeace Canada, such as research and publications to support their campaigns and projects. Notably, this includes jointly produced documents with other environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs) to coordinate their efforts in Clayoquot Sound and the Great Bear Rainforest. The records of Greenpeace International within this fonds reflect their broader campaigns to inform people and shape public opinion to oppose the clearcutting of old growth forests in Canada and elsewhere in the World. Records by Greenpeace Canada primarily include their efforts to cooperate with environmental non-governmental organizations, First Nations, forestry companies, and governments to achieve greater protection for old growth forests. The primary types of records include reports, communications, legal advice, court cases, planning materials, photographs, maps, ephemera, and posters. Most of the records in this fonds produced by Greenpeace Canada is from their Vancouver office. The fonds reflects Johanna den Hertog’s involvement in various women’s movement, labour movement, political and public service positions predominantly from the 1970s through the early 1990s. Records include materials related to den Hertog’s contributions to the establishment of Vancouver Rape Relief, an organization established to provide services to rape victims, as well as other activities related to advocacy for women’s rights, such as her participation in planning the Women Rally for Action in 1976. Records related to her participation in the New Democratic Party (NDP) at the provincial level include her role as Vice-President/Executive member of the Provincial NDP (1981-1987), Co-Chair of Mike Harcourt’s leadership campaign (1987), leadership roles in the planning of the party’s 1982 convention and the 1983 and 1986 elections. Records related to her service as President of the NDP include materials related to her role as spokesperson for the party, chair of numerous committees, liaison with the labour movement and the party’s representative in international forums. Also included are records of her public speeches throughout Canada. The fonds also includes records related to den Hertog’s 1984 and 1988 campaigns to win election as a Federal Member of Parliament in the riding of Vancouver-Centre and the 1989 Provincial by-election for Vancouver-Point Grey, where she put her name forward for the NDP party nomination. Although unsuccessful all three times, she lost the 1988 campaign by a narrow margin. Records relating to den Hertog’s volunteer and project work include her service as a board member of the Canadian Centre for Arms Control, her publication of a book chapter on the constitutional debate that took place in Canada in the late 80s and early 90s, her service on the Royal Commission for Electoral Reform and her service as a commissioner for the National Citizen’s Inquiry into Peace and Security.

Personal records include diaries, personal correspondence, and a few photographs.

The fonds consists primarily of subject files created and accumulated by Amy Dalgleish relating to various organizations in which she was involved such as the New Democratic Party and the Vancouver Society of Friends for the Elderly as well as social issues such as breastfeeding. The fonds also contain records from Ms. Dalgleish’s 1956 legal case before the B.C. Supreme Court on the right of a woman to use her maiden name on probate documents, as well as correspondence related to her various areas of political engagement.

The subseries contains materials related to the activities of IBEW Local 213 between 1949 and 1991, predominantly between1949 and the mid-1970s, including affidavits, reports, correspondence and newspapers. Documented within the subseries is the internal conflict between the IBEW’s American leadership and trade union activists within Local 213, and attempts to unite IBEW Locals in British Columbia through a provincial council. Also contains numerous issues of IBEW Local 213’s newspaper, the 213 Live Wire, between the mid-1950s and mid-1970s, grievance reports and ephemera from the 100th anniversary of the first annual convention of the IBEW of America, celebrated in 1991.

This fonds consists of records related to Darryl Adams' activities as a political and social justice activist as well as his personal life. The fonds consists of three series: personal life and administrative records; activism involvement series; and activism collections series.

Records relating to the first series, Adams' personal life and administrative files include: personal correspondence received by Adams; photographs collected, taken of or by Adams'; school records and club memberships memorabilia; news clippings and other articles; and work related records such as research materials and correspondence.

Records relating to the second series, the activism involvement series, include material created or used by groups that Adams was involved in such as the Vancouver American Exiles Association (VAEA), as well as the Galindo Madrid Case of the 1970s. The last series consists of three major collections that Adams obtained over his lifetime. The first collection is the lefty literature collection that consists of newspapers, magazines, periodicals, booklets and bulletins, and other publications related to leftist themes. The second collection is a poster collection and the last collection is a button collection.

Fonds consists primarily of material related to Rush's activities as a leader of the CCP, political activist and writer in Vancouver from 1935 to 1996. There is also a personal/biographical series of records which detail the events of Rush's life. Other textual series in this fonds contain drafts of Rush's writings and public speeches, his correspondence, his reports and speeches to party conventions, and his published materials. There is a photographs series which details Rush's various editorial political trips to socialist countries during the Cold War. The memorabilia series also contains material related to Rush's trips abroad. There are pins, medals and commemorative coins from China, Vietnam and the Soviet Union. Finally, an audiocassette series contains recordings of some of Rush's speeches during the 1970s and 1980s.

Fonds consists of records created and accumulated by Dave Barrett relating to his personal, political, and professional life. Within the fonds there are appointment books recording information about Dave Barrett's private and political life, personal records, records created by Dave Barrett in the course of creating his autobiography, records created during Mr . Barrett's political career, and records created during Dave Barrett' s work with CJOR.

The collection consists of records relating to the 1935 On-to-Ottawa Trek and its 50th Anniversary. Included are copied posters, newsletters, proclamations, legal documents, and photographs relating to the original Trek as well as audio tapes, clippings and itineraries from the 1985 anniversary events.
