Jack Shadbolt fonds

The fonds consists of Shadbolt's private journals, notebooks, lecture notes, sketch books from his work with the Art Students' League of New York, 1948-1949 as well as 6 sketchbooks from the 1960s, a collection of his loose drawings and studies, an extensive collection of photographs of Shadbolt's paintings, including colour transparencies, slides of a photographic work entitled "Year", family photographs, personal and professional incoming correspondence, his picture reference file of postcards and magazine clippings, exhibition catalogues and other printed material. Correspondents include John Macdonald, Wilfred Watson, Max Maynard, Jock Firestone, Molly Bobak, George Swinton, and Ron Thom.

The collection documents the musical career of American-Canadian singer and actor Leon Bibb. The collection consists of written music, scripts, assorted notes and drafts, show outlines, and other material created as part of Leon Bibb’s musical career. Content from Bibb’s scripts and show outlines also reflect his relationships with other musicians, including his good friend Paul Robeson, his fellow Vancouver musicians Ruth Nichol and Gail Nelson, and his son Eric Bibb. Written music includes annotated and unannotated sheet music, scores, lead sheets, chord charts, and song sheets, of which a portion are handwritten manuscripts.

The collection is arranged into four series: Albums; Shows; Assorted written music; and Miscellaneous materials.

"I've Got U Under My Skin: AIDS and Classical Music" collection

Collection consists of selected material from the exhibition "I’ve Got U Under My Skin: AIDS & Classical Music." Curated by UBC’s Music Librarian, Kevin Madill, this exhibition ran from 27 September 2023 to 15 December 2023 in the foyers of the Music Library and Gerstein Library at the University of Toronto, and at Hart House Library at the University of Toronto. The exhibition included print scores, audio records, books and ephemera, an accompanying audio listening list, an exhibition talk by the curator, two one-hour cross-library tours led by the curator, and an accompanying concert of selected vocal works from the exhibition performed by faculty and students from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music. The exhibition materials were selected from the music collection of UBC Library or borrowed from anonymous lenders. Much of this material was also displayed at the exhibition "Activism in the Arts: I’ve Got U Under My Skin: AIDS & Classical Music," curated by Madill, which ran from 15 September 2022 to 15 January 2023 in the foyer of the UBC Music Art and Architecture Library of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre.

The exhibition illustrated early responses to the AIDS pandemic from the classical music scene. As observed by Madill, themes present in sound, score, and packaging include: health education, community building, sense making, concretization of past events, and expression of loss.

Collection includes musical recordings in the form of long playing (LP) records and a CD, copies of scores, and assorted ephemera, as well as website print-outs, correspondence, labels, and an exhibition materials list created as part of the exhibition.

Leonard Angel fonds

Fonds contains textual, photographic, and other graphic material related to Angel’s various creative endeavors, including poetry, playwriting, prose writing, and art. Material from plays includes scripts, correspondence, clippings, and ephemera from their production. The fonds contains drafts of his poetry, as well as clippings of select poems published in the Or Shalom Synagogue’s newsletter Keren Or. There is a wide range of material related to Angel’s scholarly and personal interests in religion, philosophy, and spirituality, including but not limited to published articles, material from meditation retreats led by Angel, and miscellaneous writing and correspondence on Judaism, Zen, and other religions and philosophies.
The fonds also contains his collected “black books,” sketchbooks spanning nearly thirty years that include notes and drawings of meetings, conferences, and personal events attended by Angel. Pen and ink portraits of individuals make up the majority of Angel’s sketches. Other personal records include diplomas and certificates, along with correspondence and a sample set of a card game developed by Angel.

Fonds consists of photography and postcards from S.P. Judge’s travels in the early 20th century, primarily in Egypt, India, Japan, and the Netherlands. The subjects of these photographs and postcards are generally ancient temples, landscapes, and local people. The fonds also includes a scrapbook filled with printed material, clippings of graphic art (primarily art nouveau), and photography created by S.P. Judge during his career as an artist.

The fonds consists of correspondence (both personal and business), manuscripts of novels, short stories (some untitled), and poetry, as well as reviews of Ethel Wilson's work, contracts, photographs, awards, diaries (1938-1942) and subject files. Files created by MacMillan Company of Canada relating to the publication of some of Ethel Wilson's novels have been added to the fonds. Included are subject files relating to "Hetty Dorval", "The Innocent Traveller", "The Equations of Love", "Love and Salt Water", and "Mrs. Golightly and Other Stories" as well as articles of short works and articles, clippings, and correspondence regarding Ethel Wilson (1944-1972).

Stuart Keate fonds

These papers consist of 5 metres of Stuart Keate's personal papers which he kept in files at the office or at home. They span the years 1918(?) to his death in 1987. The bulk of the collection dates from 1943 to 1987. The majority of the records are textual records. Other media include 268 photographs, one negative and 14 tape recordings.
The papers cover four main areas of interest. Firstly, they provide background information on policy and editorial decisions made by Keate, his superiors and his staff when he was publisher at the Vancouver Sun, the Victoria Daily Province and Bureau Chief for Time Magazine in Montreal.
Information concerning publishing and editorial decisions can be found in those files of memos and correspondence between Keate and Bruce Hutchison, Max Bell, R .A . Malone, G .N .M . Currie, F .P . Pulbications Limited and Allan Fotheringham and a few other members of The Vancouver Sun staff. These will mainly be found in the Victoria Daily Times and The Vancouver Sun files. There are also some files in Keate's home files. Files of letters and ideas for his book, Paper Boy, which was published in 1980, provide further information on policy and editorial positions as well as much information on newspaper magnate Max Bell about whom he wanted one day to write a book.
Secondly, these papers provide an insight into Keate's wide range of interests, activities and involvement in the community and public affairs particularly in the 1960s and 1970s. There are copies of over 150 speeches written by Keate. There are a series of notes, letters and a report he prepared for the federal government as a neutral mediator in 1966 dealing with the CBC's handling of personnel of the program, "This Hour Has Seven Days." Numerous correspondence files with service, recreational and community groups as well as scrapbooks, tape recordings and photographs of sportsmen and political figures furnish a picture of a man keenly interested in his city, province, and country.
Thirdly, the files cover his experiences as an information officer for the Department of National Defence - Naval Service during the second World War. They consist of correspondence with his wife, with the Department of National Defense Naval Office and a diary written while on board the ship the HMSS Uganda in 1945.
Fourthly, they show Keate, the author, at work. There are a number of drafts as well as correspondence relating to his book, Paper Boy. Various manuscripts in the collection also document his writing activities.

The fonds comprises materials chronicling Ian Slater's writing career. It includes 79 5 ¼-inch computer floppy disks, which contain both published and unpublished manuscripts of Slater's fictional works in digital format, dating from 1981 to 1998. These dates are based on the last modified dates of the digital files. All digital manuscripts were originally typed in plain-text format on DOS 3.1 or 3.2. The fonds also includes a heavily-annotated copy of the second (2003) edition of Slater's Orwell: The Road To Airstrip One.

Vancouver Women in Focus Society fonds

The Vancouver Women in Focus Society fonds reflect their activities in video production and distribution, gallery exhibitions, activism and lobbying, community engagement, and research. Materials include correspondence, office files, newsletters, grant applications, sales and rental records, legal documents, catalogues and bibliographies, clippings, posters and flyers, meeting minutes, books, newspaper clippings, and financial records. The fonds also contains several non-WIF records relating to feminist and women’s issues, general art and film, as well as local and federal politics that reflects the context of the time and place in which Women in Focus were operating.

Records relating to the first series, the Administrative series, includes files dealing with the maintenance and upkeep of the society such as: meeting minutes, sales and rental agreements, artist contracts, artist resumes, notes, lease information, WIF newsletters, and legal and court documents. The series also consists of two subseries: Financial and Correspondence.

Records relating to the second series, the Production and Distribution series, include files dealing the Women in Focus Society’s production and distribution of feminist video and film. Production records include: meetings and records from the production committee; files relating to various individual productions; and publicity for WIF productions. Distribution records include: distribution statistics; catalogues; distribution information and research; and distribution correspondences.

Records relating to the third series, the Gallery series, include files dealing with the Women in Focus Society’s art gallery events. Gallery records include: records relating to the gallery committee; artist submissions; publicity for gallery shows; research into potential gallery shows; gallery guides; information relating to specific shows; and gallery sign in books.

Records relating to the fourth series, the Events series, include files dealing with the Women in Focus Society’s various events that they hosted or participated in. Event records include: publicity for events; project budgets and logistics research; correspondences and press releases about events; documents relating to workshops; research relating to participating in other events. Many records in the Events series relate to project-specific grant applications in the Administrative series.

Records relating to the fifth series, the Resources and Reference series, include files dealing with the Women in Focus Society’s research into related organizations and various of topics of interest. Records related to other organizations include: publicity for non-WIF productions; newsletters from other organizations; and artist profiles. Records relating to topics of interest cover political and social issues as they relate to women and/or art. These records range from the late 1960s to the early 1990s. These files include: government publications; magazines; newsletters; newspapers; zines; pamphlets; and photocopies of books.

Fonds documents the Or Gallery’s work supporting contemporary and experimental art practices via exhibitions, projects, and publications. Represented exhibitions are listed under Exhibition records series and the relevant Curator files subseries.

Fonds also reflects the Or Gallery’s administration and operation as an organization and as a physical gallery space. Records consist of photographic materials, correspondence, ephemera, proofs, mock-ups, and other material documenting: the curation, installation, and display of exhibitions; the administration and operation of the Or Gallery; and the design process of Or Gallery publications and ephemera.

Paperny Films fonds

The fonds consists of 44 separate archival series most of which are based on specific production titles. For each title there is a digital master copy of the program(s). Each production includes a set of video and audio elements, the bulk of which are original shoot tapes. In addition there is also corresponding textual material that helps provide context and background for the development of the various projects. The textual and a/v materials have been described in separate sections of the inventory. For both sets of material the numbers assigned during the original cataloguing and creation of the database have been retained and appear in square brackets [ ] as part of the descriptions to allow for cross referencing as necessary.
First donation: This donation is Paperny Film's first to an archival repository and it represents 27 of the company's indigenous proprietary titles (1996-2004) of their approximately 55 non-fiction productions (1996-2007). The collection is comprehensive in that it offers digital master copies of each of the title/series included in this donation. There are 62 original masters that include over 50 hours of recordings. There is also a DVD copy of each of the master tapes to provide easy access to the information.
The collection features over 1900 a/v elements arising from some 27 separate productions. The scope of material includes: BetacamSP, MiniDV, Digial Betacam, DVD, VHS, CDs and digital audio tapes. The majority of the collection consists of original shoot tapes. There are over 1,000 hours of video recordings featuring prominent Canadian including Mortecai Richler, Henry Morgentaler, Jimmy Pattison, and Nancy Green.
In addition to the obvious importance of providing access to full interview interviews with and about prominent Canadians, the a/v elements are also quite instructive in helping communicate an understanding of the creative process that gave rise to particular productions.
The textual material extents to approximately 5.15 metres and also includes over 13,000 photographic images. The images document the various production shoots and, in some cases, include copies of historical photographs/documents that were used in the productions.
Examples of the types of records included with the textual material include: treatments, outlines, synopses, proposals; collected research materials; correspondence relating to development, production, publicity; original interview notes and transcripts, interview schedules; scripts (and drafts), storyboards; production schedules, production reports and daily call sheets; publicity stills, negatives, transparencies and digital photographs; marketing plans, publicity packages, one-sheets, press releases and coverage; transcripts of completed shows; EDL's (edited decision list), assembly notes, tape logs; credit rolls, final credits and super lists.
Of particular interest in the textual material are a set of handwritten notebooks created by David Paperny, Audrey Mehler and others. Seventeen in total, these notebooks are in Box 1 (3,4,5,6,11,12,13,14,15); Box 4 (3,8); Box 6 (17); Box 11 (23a); and Box 12 (8).
Second donation: The second donation from Paperny Film's represents 15 of the productions (1993-2006) including the Academy Award nominated The Broadcast Tapes of Dr. Peter. The collection offers digital master copies of each of the title/series included in this donation. There are 183 original masters and a DVD copy of each to provide easy access to the
information.
The collection features over 1200 AV elements arising from 15 separate productions, some of which have several seasons associated with them. The scope of material includes: BetacamSP, MiniDV, Digital Betacam, DVC Pro, DVCAM, Betacam SX, DVD, VHS, CDs and digital audio tapes. The majority of the collection consists of original shoot tapes.
There are roughly 75 cm of textual material in the newest accession.

The textual material also includes handwritten notebooks created by David Paperny, found in Box 77 (1-12) and Box 78 (1-8).

The Malcolm Lowry Manuscripts Collection includes textual records, photographs, and a variety of audio-visual materials organized into sous-fonds by creator. The Collection is predominantly textual records; the majority of materials are correspondence and manuscripts, many of which have been microfilmed.

The core of the Malcolm Lowry Manuscripts Collection is the Malcolm Lowry Papers, and the content of the Collection is consequently thematic. Materials pertaining to Malcolm Lowry’s life and works were collected by RBSC from a variety of sources, including Lowry’s friends and family.

Malcolm Lowry Manuscripts Collection

Canadian Women Composers collection

Collection consists of primary resources and related materials created and used by Canadian women composers. Each series is dedicated to one of the participating composers, which currently consists of Deborah Carruthers, Dorothy Chang, Zosha Di Castri, Lori Freedman, Barbara Monk Feldman, Ana Sokolović, Chiyoko Szlavnics, and Elizabeth Raum. Materials include a variety of records, such as original scores, manuscripts, working drafts, photographs, prints, published articles, correspondence, and materials used as inspiration in the artists' work. Going forward, the collection is expected to evolve and incorporate additional Canadian women composers.

Icelandic Archives of British Columbia fonds

The IABC fonds reflects the community collecting practices that the IABC undertook to preserve the history of Icelanders in British Columbia. Fonds is arranged in eight subfonds that reflect the various community organizations from which the archives originally collected.

Fonds documents the IABC’s commitment to preserving the lived experiences of its Icelandic community and is arranged into seven series that correspond to the IABC’s activities: administration and operation; providing educational programs and collecting biographies as well as written and oral histories; collecting Icelandic music; compiling a collection of Icelandic newspapers and publications; holding exhibits and events; acquiring photographic collections; and lastly acquiring collections of textual records, ephemera, and artifacts from its community.

Fonds consists of material that reflects Charles van Sandwyk's development as an artist, illustrator and publisher of fine books in Vancouver. Materials include original artwork (watercolours, etchings), exhibition posters, book and book signing announcements, press proofs, broadsides, invitations, edition of the High Branch Society mail-outs (which include letters, cards, decorative envelopes, poems, and small copies of art), fabric banners, and medallions. Most of the items are signed by Charles. Some of these materials were brought together by Charles and the Joyce Williams Gallery; the arrangement of that material as it arrived has been maintained. Other materials were purchased from the creator and maintain the original order at the time of their acquisition.

The Angeli-Dennis collection consists of the diaries (1855-1913), manuscripts, financial records and correspondence of William Michael Rossetti. Also included are the manuscripts, correspondence and financial records of Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1842-1882), Christina Georgina Rossetti (1853-1894), Ford Madox Brown (1852-1993), Gabriele Rossetti and other members of the Rossetti family. The fonds have been arranged into nine series: general programming, administrative, exhibitions, Front Magazine, Luminous Sites, media arts and video program, new music, performance art, and publicity and promotional materials. As much as possible, the files are arranged as they were by the original curators and program administrators. Early records (1973-1983) for all the programs are grouped together. Video program files were separated starting in 1976 when the program began. Following 1983, the programs each had individual curators.

Jean Coulthard fonds

The fonds consists of Coulthard's incoming family and general correspondence, correspondence from noted English composer Elizabeth Poston, financial records, biographical information, printed material and clippings documenting her involvement in the Canadian and International music communities as an advocate, educator and composer. Also included are original manuscripts of Coulthard's compositions and published and unpublished sound recordings of her work performances. The fonds also contain scrapbooks assembled by Coulthard's mother, Jean Robinson Coulthard, between 1898 and 1929, family photographs, and a photograph album compiled by her father, Dr. Walter Coulthard, depicting the Rossland area (ca. 1902).

The collection comprises records acquired by Peter Moogk about aspects of British Columbia’s history, including the British Columbia Electric Railway Company’s interurban train lines (predominantly from 1909-1958), and photographic representations of persons (especially white settlers, from 1870-1960), places, events and activities in the province.

The collection includes six series: British Columbia Electric Railway Company Records, Portraits of Persons in British Columbia, Photos of places, streets, and architecture in British Columbia, Photos of events and activities in British Columbia, British Columbia ephemera and Records from British Columbia Penitentiary.

Records relating to the first series, British Columbia Electric Railway Company Records, include: photographs; postcards; original BCER documents, such as union agreements and timetables; BCER employee publications; transit tokens; signs and posters from within Vancouver streetcars; and a copy of a CJOR radio script.

Records relating to the second series, Portraits of Persons in British Columbia, include: photographs and handwritten notes by Moogk about Vancouver photographers operating from 1858-1920.

The focus of the third series, Photos of places, streets, and architecture in British Columbia, is photographs of structures and places of British Columbia, notably building exteriors and interiors, and street views from 1880-1959.

The fourth series, Photos of events and activities in British Columbia, includes photos of notable events and public activities (predominantly dating 1911-1941), as well as everyday life, and also includes handwritten and photocopied information on the provenance of the photos and activities depicted.

The fifth series, British Columbia ephemera, is mostly paper ephemera representing the variety of business and activity in the province from 1890 to 1990, and includes menus, theatre programs, business correspondence, and Chinese textbooks as well as some photographic materials.

The sixth series, Records from British Columbia Penitentiary, includes textual records and photographs relating to the British Columbia penitentiary.

Vancouver Punk Collection

Collection is made up of items collected by the UBC library, for an exhibition related to punk in the Irving K. Barber Learning Center lobby. It consists mostly of vinyl’s, with two textual records relating to the history of hardcore punk and D.O.A., both created by D.O.A. Vinyl records are predominantly by D.O.A., Pointed Sticks and The Dishrags, as well as other Vancouver based punk bands. The vinyl records were all pressed in 70s or early 80s, or re-pressings of records from that same period. The re-pressings contain extensive liner notes and other ephemera.

The fonds also consists of a series reflecting Frederick Griffin’s occupation as a lawyer and his role as founder of the Canadian Loan Company.
