The Irene Howard fonds consists of general correspondence and materials related to Howard's personal interests and associations, and materials relating to her work as researcher, literary agent and writer. The fonds is divided into eight series: Association involvement and general interest; Interview recordings; Photographs and maps; "Monday Morning" magazine issues; Literary activities; NDP campaigns materials; Materials related to Ronald Liversedge; and Gold dust on his shirt publication records. The Gold dust series is further subdivided into Publication records and Research records.

The fonds includes research notes, notebooks, file cards, photocopied materials from various sources, correspondence (with publishers, research subjects, colleagues, librarians and archivists), drafts of Howard's books and essays, biographical materials, newsletters, magazines, newspaper clippings, articles, pamphlets, brochures, photographs and cassette tapes.

Fonds consists of records related to the documentary film which Ewashen directed entitled In search of utopia: the Doukhobors, produced under the name Gemini Cooperative for the Performing Arts. Other individuals involved in the film included Ray Gallon, Koozma Tarasoff and Ken Innes. Records consist of two copies of the film on reels, a shot book containing copies of historical photographs and correspondence, contracts and other textual records related to the production and promotion of the film, and a teacher’s manual and study guide.

The collection consists of photocopied minutes of a drama society of the Finnish Social Democrats at Sointula (1912-1913) and a play adapted for use by A. Orjatsals. Also included are the minutes of the FSD.

The fonds consists of diaries (1913-1915, 1917-1935, 1938-1940), letters, newspaper clippings, photographs and negatives, receipts, postcards, hand drawn plans, mathematical notations, personal notations, medical inspection notices, church publications and other miscellaneous documentation.

The fonds consists primarily of clippings and articles relating to international affairs, Chinese customs preserved in Canada, life in Vancouver's China Town and social and political problems confronted by Chinese Canadians. Further, the fonds also contains many complete copies of the Chinatown newspaper, The Chinese Voice; records related to Foon Sien Wong's Chinatown activities through the Vancouver Unity Association, the Canadian Centennial Planning Committee, and other related groups.

Fonds consists primarily of textual materials related to Herring's forestry career. Materials related to his extensive interest in the forestry industry are also present, including documents related to various lectures and conferences in which he participated. Materials include correspondence, reference materials, maps, blueprints, financial documents, handwritten notes, and more.

Also included in the fonds are photographs, slides, and moving images; some of these are images related to forestry, while most show scenes related to Herring's personal interests and travels, many of which involve hunting and fishing, or attending Highland games and other cultural celebrations and events.

Fonds consists of records related to Jack Scott’s activities as a political activist and author, as well as material related to his personal life, from the 1930s through his death in 2000. Records relating to Scott’s political activities include material generated or used by groups with which Scott was involved, such as the Progressive Workers’ Movement (PWM), the Vancouver Study Group (VSG), the Red Star Collective (RSC), and the Chinese-Canadian Friendship Association (CCFA). These records include meeting minutes and summaries; committee lists, agendas, reports, policies, constitutions, financial statements, and other internal documents; position, discussion, and opinion papers and critiques; conference, seminar, and workshop materials; correspondence; materials by or about other communist, socialist, or leftist organizations; papers, articles, speeches, critiques, letters, and reports on related topics; ephemera and publications, such as newsletters and journals; clippings and photographs; and other materials. Records relating to Scott’s writings and publications on socialist and labour movements and other topics include drafts of published and unpublished pieces, research notes, comments and corrections, proofs, and supporting documents, such as correspondence, clippings and photocopies, ephemera, and other materials. The fonds also consists of material related to a libel claim made against Scott and the Committee on Canadian Labour History. These records include copies of court documents, correspondence, Scott’s writings and research on the plaintiffs, ephemera related to the plaintiffs, and other materials. The fonds also consists of material collected by Jack Scott relating primarily to other communist, socialist, leftist, or social justice organizations and arranged by subject either by Jack Scott or by his acquaintances following his death. This material includes photocopies and originals of letters, writings, and other documents; statements, commentaries, bulletins, and other literature; ephemera, such as posters, newspaper clippings, flyers, newsletters, and pamphlets; and speech texts. The fonds also consists of personal papers and documents, including miscellaneous incoming correspondence, oral history interview transcripts and related documents, and correspondence and documents related to Scott’s 1964 expulsion from the Communist Party.

Records relate to Miki’s writing and editing activities, his academic career, his involvement and support of the Japanese Canadian Redress movement, his participation in various literary and cultural events and projects, and his personal life.

This fonds contains Ada Luise Richardson's research notes on music history and theory. Her research focused on Finnland and Russia and was conducted in the beginning of the 20th century. For her research Richardson collected Russian and Finnish folklore songs, as well as newspaper clippings and excerpts from contemporary literature. Richardson's research notes were meant to be the basis of papers on music history and theory. The fonds contains music sheets and some pieces of correspondence, as well.

Fonds reflects Lee’s professional career, investment ventures, engagement with political and social communities, and life with friends and family. It offers particular insight into the social aspects of Lee’s life, as she kept many of the invitations, programs, and other ephemera relating to events that she attended because of her community involvement and philanthropy across all aspects of her life. In addition to a variety of textual records relating to her business ventures, volunteering, and military service, the fonds contains a significant number of photographs that were taken or otherwise collected by Lee and reflect the full range of her life’s facets.

The fonds is divided into five series: Entrepreneurship, investing, and business; Military service; Community and political activity; Personal records; and Photographs.

The entrepreneurship, investing, and business records series relates to Lee’s activities as a businesswoman and investor. Records in this series include financial and legal records, marketing materials, and certificates of recognition.

The military service records series relates to Lee’s time in the ambulance corps and subsequent involvement with initiatives in support of veterans. Records include a limited number of original materials from Lee’s period of service; correspondence and other records including meeting minutes and ephemera documenting Lee’s involvement veterans’ advocacy and recognition efforts.
The community and political activity records series relate to Lee’s involvement in Chinese Canadian community projects and the Social Credit and Conservative parties of Canada. Records in this series include ephemera, correspondence, and meeting minutes that document her involvement with these groups.

The personal records series relates to Lee’s travels as well as her life outside of her work and volunteer efforts. Records include correspondence, ephemera, and certificates.

The photographs series relates to a large number of photo albums and loose photographs that reflect all aspects of Lee’s life.

Fonds reflects Minoru Kudo’s involvement within the Japanese Canadian community both before and after World War II as well as the Kudo family’s experience of forced removal and its impacts on their lives moving forward. If offers insight into the actions taken by the British Columbia Securities Commission during the process of the forced removal of Japanese Canadian families from B.C. and the advocacy work of Japanese Canadians, as individuals and through groups such as the National Association of Japanese Canadians, to receive redress following the end of the war, both through the The Royal Commission on Japanese Claims(the Bird Commission) and outside of it. In addition to these materials, the fonds also illustrates the work of younger generations of Japanese Canadians to uncover and reconnect with their history. The fonds contains research files from the Kudo family, who worked to document and bring together recollections of the Mission City Japanese community as it existed before the war and where families were for forcibly removed to during it, as well as the Kudo family’s history specifically. A significant portion of the fonds is the translation work done by Kathleen Merken on Minoru Kudo’s diaries.
The materials are arranged into three series, reflecting the different time periods and purposes in which the documents were created. The Minoru Kudo diaries and correspondence series contains the original diaries and correspondence of Minoru Kudo as well as photocopies that were made by Kathleen Kudo for reference and preservation purposes. The translations series contains records relating to the translation of the diaries by Kathleen Merken, research files were used to add context to the translations, and the translations themselves. The family records series contains genealogical research files, files documenting the deaths of various members of the Kudo family, and some personal records of Kathleen Merken that speak to her academic history and work.

Fonds consists of personal and business records of Peter Faminow, related to his personal and family life, career as a lawyer and a politician, and his interests and involvement in the Doukhobor community. Records include correspondence, clippings and scrapbooks, photographs, audio recordings, papers, speeches, and other textual records. The fonds is arranged into the following series: Family records, Records related to education, Records related to law practice and career, Doukhobor related files, Scrapbooks and clippings, and Audio recordings.

The fonds consists of the research materials for Irene Howard's book, Vancouver Svenskar which chronicles the history of Lodge Linnea No. 76, Vancouver. The fonds consists of minute books, financial records, membership lists, attendance records, and related material. The fonds also includes the minute book of Lodge 76‘s juvenile division Pride of Vancouver No. 27 (IOGT, 1936-1937). Fonds consists of the following series: Minutes of Lodge No. 76, Membership of Lodge No. 76, Financial Records, Young People: Pride of Vancouver, No. 27.

Fonds also contains a file of ephemeral items and artifacts related to the Lodge No. 76, including a petition for the control of alcohol and drug trafficking, a medal, and certificates (see box 1).

Fonds consists of records generated by TRAS in the course of raising funds for, and administering funds to, overseas partners. The fonds is organized into the following series: administrative records (1962-1990) and project records (1964-1997). The film “Initiation of a Dalai Lama” was brought to UBC by John Conway in May 1988 to be deposited with the records of TRAS. Documentation from 1970 with the film suggests the film was borrowed from UBC Audio-Visual Services Extension Department by Dr. Shotaro Iida for use by the Dalai Lama.

The fonds consists of correspondence, reports, minutes of meetings and activities of the Vancouver Labour Committee for Human Rights.

The collection consists of a medal for bravery, likely awarded to a family member for meritorious service during the Boxer Uprising (義和團運動), which was a series of incidents in China with anti-imperialist and xenophobic roots that lasted from 1899 until 1901; and a fragment of a corresponding letter of recommendation. The medal was specifically awarded to the recipient for their conduct during the Siege of Tienstin, which was a major battle during the Boxer Uprising, and the letter of recommendation mentions a Mr. D’Arc, which is likely Desmond’s maternal grandfather who was a volunteer rifleman at Tientsin. Lastly, the collection contains an album consisting of photographs of Tientsin during and immediately after the Boxer Uprising. The album primarily includes photographs of troop movements and military equipment, but also includes a few personal family photographs.

The fonds reflects Leonard and Kitty Maracle's involvement in the British Columbia Association of Non-Status Indians (BCANSI), as well as various other Aboriginal organizations, committees, clubs, programs, projects and events. The fonds consists of correspondence, meeting minutes, proposals and reports, notes, publications, newspaper clippings, photographs and various ephemera relating to Aboriginal rights and political activity primarily in British Columbia but also throughout Canada. The fonds also contains some of Leonard and Kitty’s personal papers, including correspondence, family photographs, writings and notes.

The material includes correspondence, business related documents such as invoices and ledger books, and his community involvement related documents. The material also contains photographs, newspaper and magazine clippings, other personal collections such as rubber stamps, birthday congratulations, self-learning notes and so on. Fonds is arranged into series according to the type of documentation: Correspondence, Business documents, Community and political involvement documents, Centennial celebration and other personal documents, Certificates, Newspaper and magazine clippings and Photographs.

The fonds consists of correspondence, journals, scrapbooks, photographs, diplomas, certificates and reference and printed materials relating to Cumyow's activities and interests among the Chinese-Canadian community of Vancouver. The activities of his family are also reflected in the fonds.

The fonds contains records pertinent to Lock Tin Lee’s functions as a KMT member, a public school educator, his personal life, and his overall involvement in organizations and affairs concerning the overseas Chinese. Lee’s records offer insight into the political aspirations of the Kuomintang amidst the backdrop of the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Cold War, the Chinese Civil War, and beyond; the public education scene for Chinese Canadians in British Columbia; and the lived experiences of the overseas Chinese in 20th century Canada.

Records predominantly range from Lee’s earlier years in China in the 1920s until his death in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1980. Records include reports, correspondence, notebooks, receipts and invoices, maps, books and bound material, newspapers, greeting cards, song sheets, business cards, badges and memorabilia, stamps and plaques, photographs, poems, flag textiles, and more. Many of these records were created in British Columbia, Canada, but others were generated in the process of Lee’s travels to other countries (predominantly Taiwan) or were received by Lee from other individuals and organizations based outside of British Columbia or Canada. Some records were generated or received by Lee’s family members.

The collection consists of research material created or collected by Olof Seaholm pertaining to Swedish immigration and organizations to Canada and North America. The collection mainly consists of general research material related to these themes, but there is some more specialized research into specific areas of Swedish Canadian history, such as the Scandinavian Central Committee and the International Order of Good Templars. Textual records in this collection include minute books, clippings, a constitution, correspondence, research notes, newspaper and magazine issues and clippings, books, and photographs documenting Swedish communities in British Columbia and research material about Swedish activities in North America.

The collection contains four series related to Seaholm's research. They include the Swedish Canadian research material series; Scandinavian Central Committee series; Independent Order of Good Templars series; and the Swedish Canadian Rest Home material series.

The fonds consists of correspondence, memoranda, notes, reports, agenda, calendars and printed materials pertaining to the activities of the Department of Geography and its Head (1969-1986). The fonds also contains the Olav Slaymaker Sous-fonds (1975-1976).

Fonds consists of reports and published and unpublished material which reflect his anthropological interests particularly in the areas of religion and mythology. Fonds also includes Burridge's B. Litt. thesis (1950) and Ph.D. thesis (1953), as well as some recordings of his class lectures given from 1986-1987 recorded by anthropology student Lindy-Lou Flynn.

The fonds consists of material related to Matthew Lindfors’ advocacy, promotion, and research into the culture and history of the Swedish diaspora in Canada, particularly in BC. The materials are sorted into three series: Swedish-Canadian Culture and History; Press Publications and Correspondence; and Sofia Girls’ Tour. Contents include typescripts of interviews and radio broadcasts about Swedish-Canadian history in Canada (broadcasts were produced for the CBC), newspaper clippings about Swedes in Canada and abroad, correspondence with Swedish-Canadians and various groups supporting Swedish cultural activities in Canada (including Swedish-language film screenings in BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan), and promotional and administrative records related to the 1956-1957 Canadian tour of the Sofia Girls’ Rhythmic Gymnastics Team, which Lindfors helped to organize. The fonds also contains nearly 200 photographs of Swedes, Swedish-Canadians, and the Sofia Girls’ Team.

The fonds consists of one album of photographs taken by Sage between September 1945 and August 1946 at a relocation camp near Tashme, B.C. where she was a social worker. The photographs include general views of the scenery, individuals and groups and some smaller buildings. In addition to the camp shots, there are also pictures of Japanese Canadians preparing for relocation. The album also includes a newspaper clipping, post card and a typescript article about the Tashme Camp. The fonds also includes a small body of correspondence written by Margaret Sage to her parents Walter and Nelda Sage and to her brother Donald (1945/46).

Fonds includes correspondence, notes, publications, maps, drawings, photographs, and presentation aids pertaining to Alan Sawyer’s academic research, writing, curatorial and appraisal work. Includes provenance information and research regarding Sawyer's private collection of art and artefacts including sales records, photographs, inventories, catalogues and correspondence.

Fonds consists of editorial files and materials accumulated by Cyril Belshaw as editor of Current Anthropology. The materials include correspondence, reports, minutes of meetings, publications, manuscripts (accepted and rejected), and financial statements. They are arranged in the following series: Sol Tax (Editor), Rejected Articles, Accepted Publications, Duplicate Files, Editorial Files, CA - General, CA - Accounts, and University of Chicago Press.

The fonds consists of Turner's handwritten diary (1911-1912). Much of the diary refers to his construction activities and to the political events of the time. The diary is written in a copying book that interleaves an "onion skin"-type paper with regular paper to allow for the creation of a copy. In this instance the copies appear to have been sent to his family - the first entry is dated November 12-13, 1911 and is addressed to "Mother dearest & all."

The fonds consists of records produced by Jim Wong-Chu, records associated with Jim Wong-Chu's involvement in various cultural and artistic communities in Vancouver, British Columbia, San Francisco, California, and other areas in the northwestern United States and Canada.

In particular, the fonds includes records related to: Canadian cultural and literary communities; Asian Canadian writers; social justice and historical issues related to discrimination of Chinese and other Asian ethnic groups; and Canada and Vancouver's Chinese and other Asian cultural communities.

The fonds consists of the correspondence, reports, and memoranda (1935-1939) of the Consul General. Also included are Montreal office papers dating from 1919 and a few original documents from the Vancouver Consulate (1909-1911). There are copies of correspondence from the German Consulates at Ottawa, St . John's, Newfoundland, Toronto, Winnipeg, and Vancouver. The papers reflect trade relations between Canada and Germany as well as between Canada and other countries, with some reference to related
political and economic affairs in Canada (e.g.. the Canadian boycott of German goods, the attitude of the Canadian Press) and economic affairs in Germany (e.g., the economic policies of the German Reich). The fonds consists of records created by or collected by Ian Waddell during his legal and political career. It contains six series: Community law, Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Commission, Federal politics, Provincial politics, Select Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs, and International works.Three series follow Waddell's career path (Community law, Provincial politics and Federal politics). The International work series spans both provincial and federal timelines and therefore is its own series. The Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Inquiry and Select Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs are series that represent two important landmarks of Waddell's career that dealt with important environmental and aboriginal issues.

Files are often subject focused, although some pertain to meetings, events, and organizations. Subject files typically contain multiple document types, including correspondence, published and draft reports, speeches and lectures, press clippings, published copies and drafts of legislation, notes, news releases, and itineraries and agendas.

These files were received following the completion of Waddell's memoir, which is noteworthy due to the potential influence on his arrangement of files, the contents of some files, as well as the intermittent inclusion of some records well outside the predominant date range of a series or file.

The Thomas K. Fleming research collection consists of materials related to the settler colonial history of British Columbia, and more broadly, the Pacific Northwest and Canada. Record types include correspondence, newsletters, press clippings, printed materials, notes, maps, legal documents, as well as Fleming`s stamp collection and associated records. Historical records in the collection include content primarily from the nineteenth to early twentieth century on such subjects as forestry, travel, commerce, and postal history. The collection has been arranged into two series: Historical Records and Research Subject Files series, and Stamp Collection and Related Materials series.

The fonds consists of the incoming correspondence to Joan Gillis from a group of young Japanese Canadians she met while attending Queen Elizabeth Secondary School in Surrey. The fonds includes 149 letters and 10 small photographs, referred to colloquially as ‘snaps’ in the letters, sent from a total of 13 different correspondents. The majority of the correspondence took place during 1942 to 1946, with different friends writing from farms and work camps in Northern British Columbia, Manitoba, and Alberta. The letters provide insight into the Japanese Canadian internment, which occurred against the backdrop of a larger cultural context. Since the early 1900s Japanese immigrants and persons of Japanese descent living in Canada were subject to racially targeted legislation, including limits on immigration, limits on fishing licenses, and being denied the right to vote based on racial status.

In the spring of 1941 the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) fingerprinted and registered all Japanese Canadians over the age 16, who were required to carry identification cards until 1949. Following Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941, Canada declared war on Japan. The Royal Canadian Navy impounded the fishing boats of the Japanese Canadian fishing community, and within two months 1,200 Japanese Canadian owned boats were sold. On February 24th 1942 the federal government authorized the removal of all persons of Japanese origin, and gave the RCMP the power to search without warrant, to impose a dawn to dusk curfew, and to confiscate all cars, radios, firearms, and cameras. Mass forced dispersal and dispossession ensued, with all Japanese Canadians being sent to internment camps, to work on farms, and perform other forms of hard labor, living in very poor conditions through the much colder winters of Canada’s interior.
The letter-writers discuss their day-to-day life at the camps, living and working conditions, their new schools and teachers, and ask after Gillis’ life in Surrey and the on-goings at Queen Elizabeth (Q.E.) secondary school.
Gillis kept the correspondence bound in twine or ribbon, which is also included in the fonds. A government censor opened and read many, if not all of the letters, and many of the envelopes bear a sticker or stamp marking this. Many of the letters are hand-written, some are typed, and some are written on postcards. Listed at the file level is the full name of each correspondent and his or her specific geographical location.

Records, mainly in German, related to the writing and artistic career of Kurt Hutterli. Arranged and classified by Kurt Hutterli. The records span from correspondence with publishers, friends and fans about book-projects to notes and manuscripts from various stages of Hutterli's writings. In addition, the fonds contains notes, and materials relating to Hutterli's art-work. The fonds also contains personal records related to family matters and friends as well as Hutterli's job as teacher in Bern.

The collection consists of diaries (1909-1922, 1924-1961), notebooks, copies of sermons, and miscellaneous materials related to Shimizu’s religious work and personal life. Many of the documents reflect his involvement with church congregations and Japanese-Canadian relations.
