Biographical sketches
Dr. Jeannette Armstrong (b.1948) was born and grew up on the Penticton Indian Reserve. In 1978 she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Victoria in creative writing, and in 2009 she earned a Ph.D in Indigenous Environmental Ethics from the University of Greifswald in Germany. She is a syilx elder, a fluent speaker of nsyilxcn, as well as an author and professor of Indigenous Studies at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan Campus. She is a member of the Board of Directors of En’owkin Centre.

Dr. Geoffrey Scudder (b. 1934) was born at Fawkham, Kent, UK. In 1955 he earned an undergraduate degree with First Class Honours from the University of Wales at Aberystwith, and in 1958 he earned his doctorate in entomology from Oxford University. His postgraduate career was at the University of British Columbia, Department of Zoology from 1958 until his retirement in 1999. He is a founding member of the Osoyoos Desert Society and a member of the Science Committee of the Okanagan – Similkameen Conservation Program.

Gayle Cornish (née Mint, b. 1943) was born in Grande Prairie, Alberta. She and her family moved to Osoyoos, in the Okanagan Valley, in 1949 and she spent much of her childhood there. In 1967, she earned a Bachelor of Education from the University of British Columbia following which she taught, and then had a brief stint with the National Film Board and did freelance work with the CBC.

Scope and content
The fonds consists of documents and records that would go on to compose The Pocket Desert radio documentary, which aired on CBC Radio’s Ideas, produced by Gayle Cornish, and co-created by Dr. Jeannette Armstrong and Dr. Geoffrey Scudder. The documentary concerns the unique desert climate and ecology in and around Osoyoos, British Columbia, and the significance of the land to Syilx Okanagan people.

The fonds consists of records produced by Jim Wong-Chu, records associated with Jim Wong-Chu's involvement in various cultural and artistic communities in Vancouver, British Columbia, San Francisco, California, and other areas in the northwestern United States and Canada.

In particular, the fonds includes records related to: Canadian cultural and literary communities; Asian Canadian writers; social justice and historical issues related to discrimination of Chinese and other Asian ethnic groups; and Canada and Vancouver's Chinese and other Asian cultural communities.

Canadian Women Composers collection

Collection consists of primary resources and related materials created and used by Canadian women composers. Each series is dedicated to one of the participating composers, which currently consists of Deborah Carruthers, Dorothy Chang, Zosha Di Castri, Lori Freedman, Barbara Monk Feldman, Ana Sokolović, and Chiyoko Szlavnics. Materials include a variety of records, such as original scores, manuscripts, working drafts, photographs, prints, published articles, correspondence, and materials used as inspiration in the artists' work. Going forward, the collection is expected to evolve and incorporate additional Canadian women composers.

Fonds represents the function and activities performed by the Council of Forest Industries. The fonds consists of records related to Vancouver Status of Women’s (VSW’s) administrative activities, projects and lobbying endeavours, and research and reference resources. Although the nature of VSW’s activities has changed over time, the organization has consistently maintained a commitment to addressing social issues related to women, including gender discrimination, pay equity, familial violence, and many more topics. VSW has addressed these issues through a variety of avenues, including publications, press releases, lobbying of governments, a television program, workshops, and services for individuals in Vancouver. The fonds reflects these diverse organizational interests and activities in three series: Administration, Research and Reference Resources, and Projects and Lobbying Activities. Additionally, the fonds contains alphabetized subject files dating from 1971-1978. These files are grouped into sets and described in the attached PDF finding aid.

The Administration series contains records related to VSW’s administrative activities, including finance, committee and volunteer administration, employee management, correspondence, and strategic planning for the organization. Record types include grant applications, correspondence, invoices and receipts, meeting minutes, training materials, and correspondence.

The Research and Reference Resources series comprises materials from third parties that VSW collected to support its research projects and the needs of its visitors. The series also contains VSW briefs, press releases, and reports that were inter-filed with research materials. Record types include briefs and reports from other organizations, newspaper and magazine clippings, VSW correspondence, grey literature, copies of academic journals, and cassette tapes in honour of International Women’s Day. Subject files are arranged alphabetically.

The Projects and Lobbying Activities series features the records of VSW’s numerous and diverse projects and lobbying activities. Record types include VSW briefs, press releases, submissions to government, research reports, publications, correspondence, indexes for back issues of Kinesis, and volunteer applications.

Finally, the fonds consists of alphabetized VSW subject files from the earliest years of VSW’s operation. These subject files are grouped into three categories in the attached PDF finding aid: Office Files, Periodicals, and Reports and Miscellaneous Files.

Federation of Mountain Clubs of British Columbia fonds

Volunteer members and elected directors of the Federation of Mountain Clubs of British Columbia (FMCBC) created and kept records as part of their work carrying out the Federation’s major mandate: organizing mountain clubs from throughout the province of British Columbia to represent collective interests for self-propelled access to wilderness areas.

Ranging in date from the 1970’s to ca. 2018, records in the fonds document the FMCBC’s major activities in support of their mandate: administrative and executive activities, the creation of various committees and work undertaken by these committees, advocacy for various lands and parks throughout the province to be considered and maintained for public access, and educating and communicating to both members and the public on topics of relevant interest.

While the FMCBC as an organizational body created the majority of these records, some records in the fonds were created by related organizations, such as the British Columbia Mountaineering Club, governmental committees, or natural resource extraction companies. The majority of records within the fonds are textual, though some other record types are present, including maps, photographs and ephemera.

The fonds consists of a manuscript, black-and-white and colour prints, and slide images relating to life in the Szechuan province of China (1920-1950). A manuscript entitled A Trip to Tibet (Summer 1930) with photographs chronicles a trip taken by the Crooks with fellow medics and missionaries. The considerable slide and print collection reveals aspects of Chinese people, life and topography as well as Asian-Christian subjects.

The collection consists of archival records, printed materials, photographs, maps, posters, artefacts and paintings all related to the Klondike Gold Rush. Records span the activities of individuals, organizations, companies, and government bodies related to the Klondike Gold Rush, the Yukon, Alaska, and the Northwest Territories from ca. 1860 to 2003. The collection documents the journeys of, and commerce created by individuals and groups of people from around the world who left their homes to join the Gold Rush; it also contains materials documenting the presence of Indigenous peoples throughout the Yukon.

The collection reflects the development of regional infrastructure and transportation in the Yukon and Alaska, including the creation of the White Pass and Yukon Route railway line. Many materials in the fonds originated from the construction and development of specific town sites and communities located in the Yukon, including Dawson City, Carcross, Forty Mile, and White Horse.

Other materials document the creative works of individuals seeking to record and share stories about the Klondike in various forms, including photographs, journals, poetry, music and theatre.

The collection is comprised of the following series: Textual Records, Photographic Materials, Cartographic Materials, Graphic Materials, and Objects. Each series is majorly comprised of the record type described in the title, and materials within each series are described at the item level.

Allison Family fonds

Biographical sketch
The Allison family traces paternal lineage to John Fall Allison (1827-1897), who arrived in what would be named the Princeton area in about 1860. John Fall Allison is the namesake of the Allison Pass, which connects the Similkameen to the Fraser Valley.

Allison married Nora Yakimtikum in 1862. “Nora and John Fall had one girl and two boys, but when in 1868 John Fall found a white partner, Susan Louisa Moir, the daughter of a Ceylon tea plantation owner, he started a second family. Nora’s sons accompanied her to the reserve and remained within First Nations culture, while her daughter Lily stayed within the Allison household as a servant, and after Lily married, her family, from which Scott descends, shifted more towards European culture.” (http://www.vancouver-historical-society.ca/PDF/March2015.pdf)

This portion of the Allison Family fonds is associated with the branch of the family with the surname Thomas, or, the descendants of John Fall Allison’s daughter Caroline Allison, who married William Heald Thomas, and with whom she raised four children.

Scope and content
Fonds consists of the papers, photographs, and compiled collections relating to one branch of the Allison Family of Princeton, BC, with predominant coverage of the branch of the family with the surname Thomas. This branch has its genesis with Caroline Allison (1878-1975), daughter of John Fall Allison, who married William Heald Thomas. Their four children, particularly Roy Edward Thomas (1920-1999) are represented in this portion of the family fonds.

The collection consists of more than 250 items documenting the work and life of composer Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky (1882-1971) including autographed letters, postcards, musical quotations, miniature manuscripts, photographs, programs and other printed material. There are items relating to Stravinsky's performances in Vancouver in 1952 and 1965.

John Crosse fonds

Fonds consists of Crosse's research notes, journals and annotated photocopies regarding the marine history of British Columbia. This material was primarily generated by Crosse in the course of his research activities from 1985-2006, but the fonds also contains annotated reproductions of numerous rare maps created in the late 1700s. The textual and photographic records have been arranged by Crosse primarily according to the subjects of his research. There are three series of cartographic material which are roughly arranged according to geographical area.
The first accrual relates to Crosse's research into early explorations of British Columbia’s coast. Accrual contains research notes, maps, photographs and correspondence. Two series are accruals to series in the first accession: they are the Manby research material series and the Narvaez research material series. Accrual also contains the Research papers and archival material series, the Miscellaneous research maps and oversized items series and the Panoramic photographs series.
Second and third accruals relate to the late eighteenth century exploration of the coast of British Columbia and the Northwestern United States, as well as information on Imperial Spain, the British Empire, and sailing ships in general. Records incorporated into Narvaez research materials series and research papers and archival material series. New series created include Alaska series, Nootka series, Columbia river exploration series, and correspondence series. Records include photocopies of primary source maps, charts, illustrations, letters, logs, and journals. Materials also include book chapters from secondary source materials, photographs of sailing trips that followed the course of the Narvaez expedition, correspondence with other researchers or persons relevant to Crosse's areas of interest, and charts produced between 1980 and 2000.

The fonds reflects Philip J. Thomas’ involvement with the folk song community. This includes his research into British Columbian folk songs and his publications on the subject. The fonds also contains evidence of his personal life and career, both prior to and during his involvement with the folk song community, and some evidence of his role as a musician, including records related to performances and musical composition.

The first three accruals of the fonds were arranged into three series: Research, Publications, and Folk Song Societies and Festivals. The fonds consists of manuscripts and published forms of Evans' articles, short stories, radio plays, poems and novels. The fonds also contains many of Evans' diaries, journals, notebooks and sketchbooks which provide valuable insights into the author's personality. His extensive business and personal correspondence includes letters to and from Margaret Laurence, Silver Donald Cameron and Grace MacInnis, as well as many readers and publishing houses. The fonds also includes audio and video recordings of interviews, poetry, stories and novels used by Hubert Evans when his eyesight began to fail. Finally, the fonds contains the papers of Evans' wife Ann (Anna) Winter Evans, which consists of stories and articles.

The fonds consists of 28 broadcasts and talks on the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation, relief camps and related political topics of the depression on CJOR, Vancouver. It also includes correspondence and subject files relating to her interests in peace and women's movements.

The fonds consists of thirteen series of records pertaining to the activities of Thomas Berger, including two series of files arranged with reference to file classification schemes, related to party politics and to the Sardar Sarovar Projects Independent Review, as well as eleven series of subject files generally arranged alphabetically, related to the Royal Commission on Family and Children’s Law, the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Inquiry, the Advisory Commission on Indian and Inuit Health Consultation, a proposed United Nations Environmental Programme inquiry on whales and whaling, Japanese Canadians’ redress, the Alaska Native Review Commission, the Canadian Judicial Council and its investigation concerning Berger, the University of British Columbia President’s Ad Hoc Committee on British Columbia Native Indian People and Communities, the Simon Fraser University J. S. Woodsworth Chair committee, speeches given by Berger (arranged by event in subseries of two to seven year periodic groups), and subject files related to aboriginal peoples, the Arctic and the north in general.
There are also files related to his resignation from the Supreme Court of Canada in 1981. The files were used by Berger when he wrote his autobiography <em>One Man’s Justice: A Life in the Law</em>.

The arrangement by the records’ creator of series and file order within series has been respected. Several series contain files housed in multiple folders, indicated by notes where applicable.

Fonds consists of materials documenting the activities of the National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC) during four general time periods: the pre-redress period (including records by the National Japanese Canadian Citizens’ Association before it became the NAJC), the birth and development of the redress movement in the 1980s, the implementation of redress following the September 1988 settlement (1988 – 1992), and the post-implementation period (1993-present). Radio Canada International recordings collection

The collection consists of audio cassettes and vinyl records (33 1/3) created by Radio Canada International in the course of promoting Canada and Canadian culture to the people of Japan. The collection has been arranged into four series, which reflect the various formats the broadcasts were made up of, and include Japanese Topical Cassettes, Japanese Economic Topical Cassettes, Japanese Canadian Magazine, and Japanese Topical Discs.

British Columbia Fruit Growers' Association fonds

Administrative history
The British Columbia Fruit Growers’ Association (BCFGA) was founded in 1889 in Vancouver in response to an increase in fruit cultivation in the province during the latter part of the nineteenth century, and a corresponding need for a more coalesced marketing strategy. The first Okanagan-based member of the association was Alfred Postill (1852-1897), who was champion of cooperative fruit marketing. The BCFGA’s first convention was held in Kamloops, BC, in 1910, at the apex of trend in declining BCFGA membership over the years immediately prior, and was convened in an effort to recharge its appeal to fruit growers. Early conventions were concerned with administrative reorganization and stabilization. Over time, the BCFGA was instrumental in integrating the marketing of Okanagan fruit into a complex North American supply chain. The BCFGA is still active at the time of the preparation of this finding aid.

Scope and content
Fonds consists exclusively of a series of portfolios documenting BCFGA conventions from 1932 to 2015. These portfolios contain reports and briefs; letters; agendas, proceedings and resolutions; Presidential addresses; committee and subcommittee records.

Doug and Joyce Cox Research Collection

Collection consists of the documentation of Cox’s career as an historian and author. The collection is comprised predominantly of photographic material. There are approximately 15,000 unique photographic images: prints in various standard dimensions (8"x10", 5"x7", 4"x6" and smaller, with some custom dimensions, predominantly in black and white; slide transparencies in black and white and colour; negatives, (120, 35mm, and 4”x5”) in black and white; digital photographs in black and white and colour contained on CDs and one hard drive.

Photographic coverage extends from the 1870s to approximately 2008, with the period 1900-1970s predominant. Original photographs by Doug Cox cover the 1970s through approximately 2008.

The collection also features audio cassettes containing sound recordings of interviews recorded in the 1980s and 1990s with associated transcriptions by Joyce Cox. Government documents (primarily Province of British Columbia, c. 1910-1960s) include topographical maps, tree farm license maps, mineral claims maps, taxation records, forestry examination sketches and other records.

Geography covered is predominantly the Shuswap, Okanagan, Similkameen, Boundary, Kootenay, Nicola and Thompson regions of British Columbia, with sparser coverage of outlying areas as well.

Themes treated include mining, ranching, forestry, agriculture and orchard cultivation, industry and infrastructure, landscapes and cityscapes, sports and recreation, community life, and family documentation.

Joan Gillis fonds

The fonds consists of the incoming correspondence to Joan Gillis from a group of young Japanese Canadians she met while attending Queen Elizabeth Secondary School in Surrey. The fonds includes 149 letters and 10 small photographs, referred to colloquially as ‘snaps’ in the letters, sent from a total of 13 different correspondents. The majority of the correspondence took place during 1942 to 1946, with different friends writing from farms and work camps in Northern British Columbia, Manitoba, and Alberta. The letters provide insight into the Japanese Canadian internment, which occurred against the backdrop of a larger cultural context. Since the early 1900s Japanese immigrants and persons of Japanese descent living in Canada were subject to racially targeted legislation, including limits on immigration, limits on fishing licenses, and being denied the right to vote based on racial status.

In the spring of 1941 the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) fingerprinted and registered all Japanese Canadians over the age 16, who were required to carry identification cards until 1949. Following Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941, Canada declared war on Japan. The Royal Canadian Navy impounded the fishing boats of the Japanese Canadian fishing community, and within two months 1,200 Japanese Canadian owned boats were sold. On February 24th 1942 the federal government authorized the removal of all persons of Japanese origin, and gave the RCMP the power to search without warrant, to impose a dawn to dusk curfew, and to confiscate all cars, radios, firearms, and cameras. Mass forced dispersal and dispossession ensued, with all Japanese Canadians being sent to internment camps, to work on farms, and perform other forms of hard labor, living in very poor conditions through the much colder winters of Canada’s interior.
The letter-writers discuss their day-to-day life at the camps, living and working conditions, their new schools and teachers, and ask after Gillis’ life in Surrey and the on-goings at Queen Elizabeth (Q.E.) secondary school.
Gillis kept the correspondence bound in twine or ribbon, which is also included in the fonds. A government censor opened and read many, if not all of the letters, and many of the envelopes bear a sticker or stamp marking this. Many of the letters are hand-written, some are typed, and some are written on postcards. Listed at the file level is the full name of each correspondent and his or her specific geographical location.

The fonds also includes two binders of material on guidelines for novel-writing and descriptive cataloguing, a dramatized version of her novel as well as her M.A. projects.

Thomas Norris fonds

The Norris fonds documents the legal and judicial career of the Honourable Mr. Justice Thomas G. Norris. The papers date between 1906 and 1976, with the bulk of records dating between 1930 and 1975 documenting his law practice and his years on the Supreme and Appeal Courts of British Columbia.
Part I of the fonds consists largely of correspondence and printed material, including scrapbooks relating to the Industrial Commission as well as case notes and legal papers relating to other cases, 1947 - 71, (2 meters). Owing to a previous donation of annotated transcripts of the hearings of the "Industrial Commission as to Shipping in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River System" in 1963, other material relating to the investigation of the activities of Harold Banks was donated in December, 1989. The 108 volumes and index to the hearings are catalogued (SP HE 769 A25).
Part II of the fonds consists of professional files, judicial subject files, case files, personal papers, miscellaneous papers and photographs (7 meters).
Part III of the fonds consists of professional correspondence donated by Jerry Vanson of Kelowna in 2011, as well as personal correspondence, scrapbooks, and photographs donated by Norris’ grandson, also named Thomas Norris, in 2014.

The bulk of the records in the fonds are located in Part II in the Professional Files, Judicial Subject Files, Case Files, and Personal Papers series.

The Professional Files series, including materials newly processed in 2019, consists mostly of case files generated by Norris during his years as a lawyer in Kelowna and Vancouver. Also included in this series are subject files with additional information about areas of interest. For example, Norris created several files with documentation on the Associated Fruit Growers Ltd. and other marketing boards (1927 - 49). Other interesting subjects include the Kelowna Police Inquiry (1929-30), the Japanese claim Commission (1950), Rex v. Ducharme - murder case (1950), and politics (1932-35). The ''Politics" files provide a great deal of information about Norris' Conservative party interests and the process behind the appointment of a lawyer to Queen's counsel. Additional professional files created while Norris was practicing law in Kelowna (file#663-1109) were discovered and donated in August, 1990. The file list for these materials is now located on pages 34-39 of this finding aid.
The Judicial Subject Files series in Part II documents Norris' career on the Bench and his subject interests. The files include correspondence surrounding his appointment to various levels of the judiciary, files created during his judicial career and other judicial matters. For example, files often contain judgements, cases considered, clippings and other related materials. The case of Regina vs Bob & White documents the various issues considered before a decision was handed down on aboriginal hunting and fishing rights in B.C. Also included in this series are documents relating to the St. Lawrence Seaway Inquiry. Other files include subjects of the law such as divorce, Native Indians and Legal Aid. Files also included records created about the Admiralty Court, the Supreme and Appeal Courts of British Columbia and the Yukon Territorial Courts.
The Case Files series in Part II includes court documents and notes drafted by Norris. These case files were separated from other case files by Norris probably because of personal interests and the volume of materials. Each subseries of records document a case: Buttle Lake, in Strathona Park (1951), the Vancouver Policy Inquiry (1955), B.C. Telephone's Application for rate increases (1950), Royal Commission on Energy (1958) and Gordon Wismer v. MacLean Hunter (1954). The Buttle Lake files include transcripts of hearings conducted in Courtenay and Victoria, notes and some materials related to submissions presented to the Water Comptroller. Norris represented several groups opposed to the construction of the dam at Buttle Lake. The Wismer v. MacLean-Hunter files include examinations for discovery of Blair Fraser and Gordon S. Wismer, briefs and other materials used by Norris as he represented the Attorney General of B.C., Gordon S. Wismer against MacLean-Hunter magazine in a slander and libel suit.
The Personal Papers series in Part II reflects Norris’ personal interests, and also contains business or legal materials. For example, in this series are files and correspondence relating to the Law Society of B.C., the Law Society & Yale Bar Association meeting in 1958 and arrangements for the 1952 Judge Advocate luncheon. Other files reflect upon friendships with individuals such as Hugh Keenlyside and Leon Koerner. Materials newly added to this series in 2019 contain items such as travel souvenirs, birthday messages from Norris’ friends and family, and information related to Norris’ retirement. The Army Papers subseries contains records related to the time Norris spent serving in the Canadian military in World War II. These records range from 1939 to 1959, with the bulk of the records dating between 1941 and 1945.

The fonds consists of legal documents collected by John Keenlyside over the last thirty five years. The documents give insight into the formation of British Columbia's legal system when it consisted of two colonies. The legal records (including writs, testimony, judgements, and other court documents) were produced by judges, magistrates, defendants, claimants, and other relevant parties. Some figures of historical significance who created legal records in this fonds are the first judge in BC, the first Attorney General, and BC's earliest clergy, businessmen, and other prominent figures from the colonial period.

This fonds also consists of documents related to the British Columbia Provincial Police force and various Japanese-Canadian and civil rights groups.

This fonds consists of 12 series; meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, welfare funds, videos, regulations and legislation, related organizations, general business records, land referrals, herring (roe), financial, First Nations, and salmon. Each of the series relates to the F.V.O.A.'s work with fishing and water concerns. The same issues defined within each of these series are also documented through the newspaper clippings. The minutes span over 40 years, beginning in 1938, and include general, committee, director's and membership meetings. The fonds also includes copies of legislation and regulations relating to various fishing and water related concerns, such as ports and harbours, maritime codes, vessel construction, shipping, and research. The F.V.O.A.'s ongoing cooperative work with relevant outside groups is documented through numerous drafts, proposals, agreements, reports, and correspondence. The videos are of the Skeena River Steelhead, Salmon, the Sportfish Observer Program and First Nations fishing rights. There is a large amount of land referral material (the application for use of Crown land) including several maps. With reference directly to fish; there is information on herring (roe) related issues, and a significant amount of documents covering Salmon. A vast portion of the Salmon series deals with Canadian-U.S. negotiations regarding poaching, water boundaries, salmon shares, runs and catches. The fonds provides overall insight into the workings of the F.V.O.A.

In addition to financial records, it includes plant appraisements for various canneries and properties owned by B.C. Packers Ltd., as well as Canadian Fish and Cold Storage Company Ltd., Coast Oyster Company, Edmunds and Walker Ltd., J.H. Todd and Sons Limited, Nelson Bros. Fisheries Ltd., Nelbro Packing Co., Queen Charlotte Canners Ltd., Rupert Fish Co. Incorporated and Western Canada Whaling Company Ltd. Those canneries and properties include Alert Bay Cannery, Bella Bella Cannery, Boswell Cannery, Celtic Shipyards, Imperial Plant, Kildonan, Klemtu, Ladner Cannery, Masset, Namu Cannery, New Westminster Cannery, Paramount Cannery, Port Edward Cannery, Prince Rupert Plant, Quathiaski Plant, Richmond Plant, and St. Mungo Cannery. In addition, the fonds consists of fifty printer's blocks for producing lithograph salmon tin labels and approximately 100 plastic cards used for advertising fish products. Also included are miscellaneous items such as the Roll of Honour of the B.C. Canning Company listing men in service during World War I, Fraser River charts (ca. 1929-1947), a sample of receipts for tram passes to B.C., and a framed sheet describing the history of the Bella Coola camp.
